Do you think Dragon Ball should be more violent/Graphic?
So recently on Invincible, Mark and Conquest have their final battle with much of the fight playing out as a Dragon Ball fight. Near the end of the fight, Mark begins to choke Conquest to death. Conquest tries to get mark to release his grip by punching him and utilizing his flying to smash them into objects. When that ultimately fails, he slices into mark's stomach and begins pulling out his gut in order to kill him. However, Mark ultimately is able to kill him first before this happens.

Now before people say, DB is a kid show, there have been many graphic instances in the series. For example, Goku and Raditz having a hole blasted into their stomach, Frieza's soldiers snapping people's necks, Vegeta dying, Cell sucking the organs out of someone with his tail, Tien having his arm broken off from nappa punching him, Vegeta getting stabbed in the chest by Goku Black.

Personally, I'm indifferent.
The blood/gore rarely added anything to the narrative and these characters feel more like ragdolls than actual human beings (-ish)
Also, no way in Hell the powers that be will sacrifice their age rating for the sake of 40y olds returning to the franchise.
These things used to fly by back then because of looser restrictions, but those times are long gone everywhere.
Would it be cool to have? Yes. Do I think it'll happen? No.

Theres also the manga version of Gohan vs the Cell juniors, which is more graphic than the anime.Sensiblesaiyans wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 7:31 am For example, Goku and Raditz having a hole blasted into their stomach, Frieza's soldiers snapping people's necks, Vegeta dying, Cell sucking the organs out of someone with his tail, Tien having his arm broken off from nappa punching him, Vegeta getting stabbed in the chest by Goku Black.
Would I want more though? No I wouldn't. I think Dragon Ball has just the right amount of graphic content for a kids show/comic and anything more would just be violence for the sake of violence.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

If I was in charge of any project and could do whatever I wanted, I'd probably just toss in more violence and sex and slap a R18 label on whatever the project was.

No, I think DB currently has the right amount of graphic content for a Japanese comic and cartoon franchise aimed at Japanese elementary school boys aged around 5-13. The addition of more graphic content would be unnecessary and would just be more graphic content for the sake of graphic content.
Because shonen is a demographic for anime and manga aimed at Japanese elementary school boys. It is not and has never been a genre in any way, nor does it have any "tropes" (e.g., "the power of friendship") associated with it. The fact that shonen is a genre and has tropes associated with it has always been a misconception and a misnomer in Western countries.Kenji wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 8:17 am Also, no way in Hell the powers that be will sacrifice their age rating for the sake of 40y olds returning to the franchise.

Re: Do you think Dragon Ball should be more violent/Graphic?
I think the original manga already has enough violence and a fair amount of gore without needing to add more.
In fact, I prefer certain changes the anime made to tone down the gratuitous gore in some scenes, like the death of No. 16, which made it seem more comical than it serious..
On the other hand, I like the deaths of Goku and Raditz better, since they’re more violent than in the manga—you really feel the gravity of the situation because they literally had a hole on their bodies.

Dragon Ball is already incredibly graphic it just gets toned down in the anime. In the manga there are extremely graphic scenes that are censored or outright skipped. I dont think it should ever get to "lookitme I am an adult Cartoon!" Invincible leves.
Re: Do you think Dragon Ball should be more violent/Graphic?
Is just as graphic as I want it to be, even the DBS manga is very violent. However, the anime is very watered down and I'd like for it to be less censored.
But the manga has always been, and still is (well, was) quite graphic.

I think violence in DB does help to show how brutal real life can be as we do bleed when we get hurt. I don't want a gore fest for DB as that's not what the series is known for. I can watch or read something like Devilman for that.

Re: Do you think Dragon Ball should be more violent/Graphic?
It really depends on the context for me, as not every fight has to be graphic, but at the same time, if you're going to show a character get a hole through their chest, then I do expect to see blood. If Toei can't, for whatever reason, show blood, then they shouldn't animate fights that would require it to be believable.
Re: Do you think Dragon Ball should be more violent/Graphic?
The most graphic parts of DB that I can think of off the top of my head:
-Freeza piercing Krillin's chest with his horn and swinging him around.
-Gohan getting his neck broken by Reacoom.
-Videl getting beaten down by Spopovich.
That's all violence stuff that would give me pause to recommend DB to a modern day child. (The comedy bits that didn't age well are another topic). So, no I wouldn't want anything that graphic.
I'd be fine with Z-era levels of blood returning though. You do lose some suspension of disbelief along with some of the danger of a battle when injures that should result in bleeding do not.

On hiatus.

Gimme back "big buff half-naked guy gets punched in gut by another big buff half-naked guy and pukes up a ton of blood" again
actually, freeza and cell were BOTH naked when they fought gokuu, so damn, that's even gayer

Re: Do you think Dragon Ball should be more violent/Graphic?
The original manga is already pretty graphic as is. There’s plenty of blood and severed limbs (including decapitations) going on in the manga. The anime toned it down, but even then, moments like Goku and Raditz’ deaths and Freeza stabbing Kuririn are pretty gory.
Also, there’s that one moment where Super Boo kills a guy by going down his throat and making him explode.
