Honestly, with all the “minis” in Daima being recast with new actors (with the notable exception of Nozawa as Goku), I’m wondering if they were deliberately testing the waters for recasting the series. Especially considering that with the exception of Vegeta, Piccolo, Bulma and Kaioshin, we barely heard from any of those characters. Why even cast new actors for characters like Kuririn, Mr. Satan or Chi-Chi when they only have one or two lines?
1) to keep a familiar voice amongst the recasted actors.
2) because they're afraid to recast her as Nozawa remains the sacred casting. Which, fair enough, I'd be afraid to recast her too.
Voice actors that you want to be replaced

Re: Voice actors that you want to be replaced
Well... in Dragon Ball Super I think the direction was worse, especially in the first episodes. I felt like René García was performing as he wanted, as if he were at a convention without any guidance. The "Nadie toca a mi Bulma" scene in Super was so forced and felt like a parody compared to the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie.Tian wrote: Fri May 16, 2025 4:25 amAlthough... the voice direction has worsened since Super. So that's another unfortunate factor.

Which one, there were 2 of them? There's Ian Corlett who voiced the character from episode 1 to when Goku started training in space, and Peter Kelamis who voiced the character from training in space to after Goku lands and beats Recoome. As well as the pioneer dub of movies 1-3.UpFromTheSkies wrote: Wed May 14, 2025 1:54 pm I know this will be a very hot take among dub fans, but I would like to see the original English voice actor for Goku from the Ocean Dub return. We need a Steve Simmons' re-translation of the manga.

Fun fact, neither Ian James Corlett nor Peter Kelamis is the original English voice actor for adult Goku, Nesty Calvo Ramirez is. Re: Voice actors that you want to be replaced
The rub is, you need something to replace the actors IN.
Like, if the legal battles ever resolve and Super finally starts up again, it’s expected that most of the current cast will continue in the roles they are already playing. Same with the movies or anything else that happens in Z or Super continuity.
BUT, if you were ever looking at a reboot of the series, that would be when you’d recast the roles. Like, if you were going to make a new animated Dragon Ball series starting from the very beginning, with modern technology, you’d need a fresh cast.
I don’t think that will happen any time soon, and definitely not while Nozawa is still with us. But someday, a talented young actor will land the role of a lifetime and be glad we are still telling this story

Re: Voice actors that you want to be replaced
Not that it's going to happen. But I thought of these roles.
Nobunaga Shimazaki as Android 17
Asami Seto as Android 18
Shouya Chiba as Trunks
If Shigeru Nakahara, Miki Itou, or Takeshi Kusao were to no longer do their respective characters, the voice actors I named would be a good replacement for the characters. I think Asami Seto would be perfect for Android 18.

Nozawa for the younger roles. Her voice is fried.

The dub can be alright nowadays but the "legacy cast" - the guys who have been around since 1999 really bog it down. There's a large segment of the fanbase that would riot if that happened so you know that's not happening anytime soon.

Mmmm I think Schemmel is fine as Goku thoguh his Kaio HAS to go, and Sabat's piccolo is great. I don't know about his Vegeta.. he sounded great in Kai but then what I watched dubbed of Super he sounded super gruff and raspy like the season set redubbing era before he finally started toning his voice down to sound more natural.TheBigBoy wrote: Mon Apr 06, 2026 8:42 pm The dub can be alright nowadays but the "legacy cast" - the guys who have been around since 1999 really bog it down. Re: Voice actors that you want to be replaced
I think King Kai/Kaio is like literally THE one voice out of all of Schemmel’s Dragon Ball roles that never really grew past being an impression, as it was and always has been because it goes all the way back to 1999 when it started as a poor attempt to imitate Don Brown’s performance from the Ocean dub (given that’s how Schemmel and the vast majority of the in house cast were directed to voice the characters back then, to try and voice match to the Ocean VA’s as much as they possibly could) where it more or less stayed stuck ever since.Metalwario64 wrote: Mon Apr 06, 2026 10:38 pmMmmm I think Schemmel is fine as Goku thoguh his Kaio HAS to go, and Sabat's piccolo is great. While his Goku has grown leaps and bounds over the years from being a lousy half baked Peter Kelamis impression (oh boy his early work as Goku circa 1999/2000 was…rough to say the least) as it initially started off as, the same can’t be said for his Kaio.
DB collection related goals as of now:
1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)
2.) Collect rest of manga
3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

Re: Voice actors that you want to be replaced
Yeah I feel his Kaio got WORSE over the years. It's crazy like he wanted him SO hard to be funny, or maybe it was an exec decision but both his dialog and acting are just insufferable whereas in his original Season 3 take the voice was super goofy an the delivery not very good but he at least tried to sound sagely when things got real.

Re: Voice actors that you want to be replaced
Maybe I'm being a little harsh but I just remember watching the dubbed Future Trunks arc and thinking James Marsters was doing a teriffic job as Zamasu and here he was talking to Schemmel's Goku and Sabat's Vegeta who still sound like these dumbass cartoon characters from a Fox Kids show or something. They have improved a LOT but they've also had damn near 30 years to do so.Metalwario64 wrote: Mon Apr 06, 2026 10:38 pmMmmm I think Schemmel is fine as Goku thoguh his Kaio HAS to go, and Sabat's piccolo is great. To be fair... Goku in particular is a tough character to voice and I'm not sure if any English voice actor has really managed to nail it. I have a soft spot for Ian Corlett but that's just nostalgia - he doesn't really have the intensity the character needs. Peter Kelamis could pull off some great stuff under proper direction but his Canadian surfer dude accent isn't ideal.

Re: Voice actors that you want to be replaced
I don’t think I really understand the “they sound too cartoony” complaint when it comes to the “legacy cast.” Aside from the fact that Dragon Ball is a silly cartoon, I don’t think Schemmel or Sabat sound especially goofy or fake as their respective characters.
If anything, I’d say Peter Kelamis and Brian Drummond sounded a lot sillier and more over the top. As for Ian James Corlett, his Goku kinda just sounded like some guy.

Re: Voice actors that you want to be replaced
There’s a noticeable difference in quality between the legacy cast and the actors who were new additions in Super tbh. Like I didn’t think too much of it in Kai when 90 percent of the cast had been with the show since 1999 but it really stuck out watching Super dubbed.WittyUsername wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 3:35 pm I don’t think I really understand the “they sound too cartoony” complaint when it comes to the “legacy cast.” Aside from the fact that Dragon Ball is a silly cartoon, I don’t think Schemmel or Sabat sound especially goofy or fake as their respective characters.

Goku’s probably a hard character to voice because he’s kind of exaggerated to begin with. I think Schemmel does a passable enough job.
Sabat’s Vegeta just isn’t very good, sounding like he got tracheostomy. I think fans just like it/accept it because it’s been Vegeta’s English voice, more or less, for 20+ years.

I my experience "too cartoony" is not a common criticism of the Texas cast, for the Ocean cast? Yeah, I've heard that criticism a lot, but in my opinion the Ocean cast do those cartoony voices very well, so I don't think its a fair knock on them.

Re: Voice actors that you want to be replaced
I feel like FUNimation is stuck in the "Saturday morning cartoon" mindset when it comes to the legacy FUNimation in-house DB dub voice actors that are still around doing their voice roles (including Stephanie Naldony, who returned to voice Mini Goku in the English dub of Daima, after a long absence since the FUNimation English redub of DB movie 1) in English dubs of post-Kai DB anime productions.
But what about the English dub voices of the DB Daima-exclusive characters and the Mini characters (besides Mini Goku) in Daima? I haven't seen most of the English dub of DB Daima, but if I remember correctly, Glorio in the dub doesn't sound cartoonish.
