Looks like Nadolny won't be coming back voicing Kid Goku ever again... https://x.com/AnimeAjay/status/2041890236720922792

It's kind of odd they brought her back in the first place, the Texas crew has been more than happy to let Colleen work as Goku and Gohan.

I believe Toei were the ones who requested they bring her back.

On the subject of Stephanie Nadolny, unless this is someone else using her Twitter account, it seems she’s apparently not incarcerated at the moment.

That is weird, since official government sites show she is, including mugshots.

Maybe Nadolny posted bail? Either way it's too bad. I actually didn't mind her Kid Goku outside of the gravelly voice that a lot of female VAs use when they're voicing little boys. I'm watching some old DB with my kids and I think she captures his ignorant goofy side pretty well

There’s a noticeable difference in quality between the legacy cast and the actors who were new additions in Super tbh. Like I didn’t think too much of it in Kai when 90 percent of the cast had been with the show since 1999 but it really stuck out watching Super dubbed.
I'll be fair, there's honestly a massive improvement in VA quality as early as the Android arc outside of a few weird outliers like #19.

I was doing a rewatch of the Android arc recently and, yeah, once you get into the 17 and 18 part of the story, it sounds like the actors are trying to sound less and less like they're just doing impressions of the Canadian cast. Sabat's modern Vegeta performance kicks in around Vegeta vs. Cell.

Yeah. During the cell arc sometime probably would have been a better time for sabat to stop redubbing Vegeta in the orange brick redubbing. Hell if he had redubbed piccolo into the point he fuses with Kami, it would have been an okay consistency fix up. But if course it's just observational. I'm still a bit annoyed that the redubbing wasn't a bonus track or something and they essentially wiped the old dub out. But we got Kai so it's all moot I suppose lol.

Doesn't mean much. She has had previous issues with arrests going back to the very early 2000s and she was still voicing Goku and Gohan until 2009. IIRC she has has been struggling with personal issues ever since her mother died suddenly a while back. Toei requested her back despite those previous convictions, which are all personal in nature and not directed at other people, which I do have sympathy for.

Also judging by Nadolny's response, we don't know the full context of what happened anyway. So its best to just wait and see what happens instead of perpetuating potentially false information that will impact someone's professional career. Her responses on X are 100% lawyer language.

I also do not want Nadolny to be replaced. I thought she was VASTLY improved in Daima, which was the first time we have heard her as Goku since post-Kai Funimation (better voice directors, more accurate script and understanding of the characters, etc). Colleen just never sat right with me as Goku, but her Gohan is completely fine.

Weird how TOEI specifically wanted her back, considering how strict those Japanese companies are with actors that get into scandals, arrested and such. They easily replace cast members who do so.

Nadolny said that Toei's U.S. branch requested that she re-audition because they'd supposedly been hounded with fan email requesting that she return after Daima was announced.

So does TOEI US have the final say on the voices? I fully expected TOEI Japan to have thal.

No, its always Toei Japan but it is Toei USA who commisions the dub by now because Funimation doesnt exist anymore and Crunchyroll is not the direct licensee like Funimation used to be.

Yeah, when I went back and watched The Vegeta vs. Imperfect Cell fight recently I was actually mildly impressed by Sabat's performance there...it wasn't exactly *good* but my memory was his voice being completely intolerable until the Buu saga. But the more annoying elements of his Drummond imitation had subsided.

But boy, the original Season 3

Yeah honestly in season 3 his Vegeta was probably one of the worst performances. Not only does he struggle to handle the tone but his delivery and enunciation is SO fucking weird LOL. Not gonna lie I find it hilarious, when as a kid I just didn't care or could tell it was bad.

Listening to Sabat’s OG Vegeta voice in the present is…woof. Though of course, that was basically FUNimation’s MO back in 1999 where they had cast most (if not all) of the in house actors to try and voice match the Ocean VA’s as closely as they could at the time, to varying degrees of quality or lack thereof.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

Sabat basically dropped the Brian Drummond impression after season 3, but it would still take many years for him to “refine” his Vegeta voice. His voice from around 2002-2007ish would sound relatively close to where it is today, but it was noticeably more gravely, which seemed to make it difficult for him to do the yelling.

According to Sabat, he basically got all his season 3 roles on the basis of the other auditions being so dogshit that half the time Funi was just like, "Ahh fuck it, Chris is here, his voice is deep and we're not paying him to do voices anyway"

Yeah the season 3 redub is probably the start of his modern voice. It was arguably even gruffer than the 2002 era voice but his vocal range and general acting was considerably better. And then in Burst Limit and Raging Blast he refined it and smoothed things out. Nowadays, I think in video games he's overly gruff and doing a caricature of the voice, but in actual focused, directed mainline series stuff he's been consistent since 2008. From what I can tell by the way he does screams since 08, it seemed like he started really studying and channeling the Japanese performances more.

If memory serves in his Geekdom interview he said Blue Gender and Yu Yu Hakusho were the first dubs where the directors actually had the Japanese version on hand and they didn't really become familiar with Japanese Dragon Ball until the video games.

That always seemed…odd to me. Ian and Peter both referred to seeing the Japanese footage and hearing the voices with Peter commenting he could never make his voice go that high without becoming infertile.. Footage I imagined Ocean had to get from Funimation.

And Funimation had started releasing bilingual DVDs as early as October 2000.

Funimation definitely had the Japanese version. It appears they just randomly decided their in house actors didn’t need to see them for recording sessions…I guess? And even Chris Sabat was the voice director for like s4-6 he didn’t have access to them either?

These behind the scenes tid bits always make me curious as to how bad the pay for Dragon Ball Z was. Ian Corlett has said on two occasions that he left due to insulting pay rates. And, that was when Canada was having some "union shakeups" and so they probably weren't getting the same protections. Then Funimation started production in house in texas where they could union dodge, so I imagine that it probably got worse from there.
We need a Steve Simmons' re-translation of the manga.
