What is the lamest thing to come out of modern DBZ?
Re: What is the lamest thing to come out of modern DBZ?
The sheer inability to create new original stories that are not aggressively repeating something that was popular and well received before, usually at the expense of the characters, who usually have their worst traits exaggerated and their development regressed for the sake of telling them all over again.

The Tournament of Power in the anime being the best arc since before Gokuu landed on Namek is legitimately so funny to me. I'm really curious if the anime team can adapt the Moro stuff and make it more compelling, since there are at least solid ideas in there to toy with.

That's kinda a interesting opinion there, I didn’t really find the Universe Survival arc that good to the point of being comparable to some of the best arcs in the original manga.JulieYBM wrote: Sun Feb 01, 2026 12:49 am The Tournament of Power in the anime being the best arc since before Gokuu landed on Namek is legitimately so funny to me...
The recruitment part is actually solid, but for me the inconsistency in power scaling in some fights was a turn off, just like Super in general and, to be honest, even parts of Z, although most of those were filler.
I think the beginning of the Tournament of Power is pretty dragged out, and things only really pick up after the reveal of Ultra Instinct Omen. It’s an arc with some excellent moments, but you can’t judge it based only on those isolated highlights. If you take everything together, I’d still say it’s worse than the Future Trunks arc, and that’s despite the fact that I hated that god damn ending.

It's nowhere near the best of the original manga, specifically the Saiyan, Namek, ad Cell arcs. I don't think Dragon Ball will ever produce anything that good again. Even the other arcs in the original manga are better than it.Noah wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2026 4:15 pmI didn’t really find the Universe Survival arc that good to the point of being comparable to some of the best arcs in the original manga.

I don't really see what major, story-ruining inconsistencies in the 'power scaling' were that big an issue. Do characters catch second and third winds? Yeah, that's part of the nature of the long-running kairologically-told storyline spread across a year-long story arc. I don't think the arc is as good as it could be—I'd say this about any arc from the 1984 comic, too. I would also say that the poor production schedule and lack of animators hinders the Tournament of Power arc from being its best, especially in some of the middle portions of the battle royal, but the overall package of the arc and how it sets up, develops and then resolves those arcs for its various characters (Gokuu, Gohan, Vegeta, Freeza, #17, Jiren, Caulifla, Kale, Toppo, et cetera) is absolutely in the same ballpark of the Saiyan and early Namek arc, if not better in a lot of respects.Noah wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2026 4:15 pmThat's kinda a interesting opinion there, I didn’t really find the Universe Survival arc that good to the point of being comparable to some of the best arcs in the original manga.JulieYBM wrote: Sun Feb 01, 2026 12:49 am The Tournament of Power in the anime being the best arc since before Gokuu landed on Namek is legitimately so funny to me...

A big plus of the arc is that actual character conflict exists between the characters. Characters have internal thoughts and feelings and don't just nod along with whatever Gokuu says so that the conversation scenes end sooner. It feels like actually watching a serialized story again with an expanded cast being far better utilized than in previous arcs. Battles have tactics and strategies thanks to writers like Tomioka Atsuhiro. Characters need to get creative with how they counter the tricky situations that they're put in, like Gohan when he can't see and then manipulates his ki to act like a sonar system. Christ, Gohan actually feels like a real character with thoughts and feelings and reacts to the danger encroaching on his life and those in it. Gohan's actually good again, despite the same old character arc being repeated for him again. The Tournament of Power's depiction of him is so much better that it makes Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero look all the worse for having zero internal continuity with how the 2015 animated series depicted Gohan in that last arc.
There's an actual, clear vision with experienced storytelling going on, especially during those first twenty-someodd episodes. You can tell that the series was led by a series director and writers that do more than just make strictly micromanaged adaptions of other IP and actually make original animated series. Given all the bullshit the various different Toei Animation staff need to deal with when it comes to the various Dragon Ball projects over the years, what Series Directors Nagamine and Nakamura and Head Writer Tomioka and his various co-writers did to make the Tournament of Power arc as good as it was is a miracle.

No offense to anyone but i miss the old Frieza Super Frieza is a lighter version of the Frieza from the Z Anime and the 90s Bardock movie where he was a truly cold villain and a real tyrant i couldnt imagine the 90s Goku forgiving and allying with Frieza thats one of the things i didnt like about Dragon Ball Super Anime Goku he should never have forgiven Frieza i also miss the cold and bloodthirsty Saiyans of the past Vegeta from Z was the epitome of a true Saiyan proud and ruthless i also didnt like the concept of multiverses with several galaxies sharing their own versions of the Saiyans i would have preferred the Saiyans to be a single race born on Planet Vegeta where Frieza destroyed them i would have liked each galaxy to have new planets new beings and new things i like Dragon Ball Super but there are things i didnt like however i did like the return of Future Trunks and the Zamasu and Goku Black saga

Re: What is the lamest thing to come out of modern DBZ?
The worst thing that happened to modern DBZ is the characters getting flanderized along with some characters being forbidden from training, fighting and competing. Retconning a character to needing to sleep for many months out of the blue, when in DB there was no indication of said character needing months to sleep but just a few seconds.
So instead of putting effort into their writing, they choose to go the lazy route which is flanderize their characters and forbid them countless times. It doesn't matter if the scene doesn't make sense or the characters should know better, they have to make the characters dumb regardless if they should know better.
Basically they thought with Dragon Ball being a well know IP, they wouldn't need to put effort into DBS since there is nostalgia so they thought people wouldn't care of its flaws.

Mate, we get it already, please for the love of god, change the record. This same sentiment doesn’t need to be repeated in every single damn thread.super michael wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 12:01 pm The worst thing that happened to modern DBZ is the characters getting flanderized along with some characters being forbidden from training, fighting and competing. As a fan I wasn't happy with DBS, I expected more from DBS. However you are right, I don't have to repeat the same thing.LoganForkHands73 wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 12:11 pmMate, we get it already, please for the love of god, change the record. Re: What is the lamest thing to come out of modern DBZ?
That DBS Super Hero manga prequel with Goten and Trunks is possibly the "lamest" Dragon Ball has ever been. Boring location, boring characters, just a god awful romantic subplot, extremely generic, not even an original concept for Dragon Ball, it only had one gag I chuckled at.
If that is a taste of what Toyotarou wants to bring to DB if the manga ever comes out of hiatus then he can keep it to himself.
