Real life people mentioned in Dragon Ball dubs

Post by TheRed259 » Mon Jun 29, 2026 7:49 am

Here are some cases that come to my mind right now:
  • Isaac Newton
He was mentioned by Goku in the English dub
  • Albert Einstein
He was mentioned by Krillin in the English dub, by Chi-Chi in the original Japanese version and in many other dubs and by Vegeta in the English subbed version
  • Dr. Jane Goodall
She was mentioned by Bulma (2:17) in the English dub
  • Humphrey Bogart
He was mentioned by Gohan (0:11) in the English dub
  • Archimedes
He was mentioned by Chi-Chi (0:31) in the original Japanese version and in many other dubs
  • Miss Portugal 1997
She was mentioned by Goku in the European Portuguese dub
  • Ursula Andress
She was mentioned by Old Kai in the Greek dub (Goku also mentions Disneyland at 0:09)
  • Wanda Stuart
She was mentioned by Vegeta in the European Portuguese dub of Dragon Ball Super
  • Tarzan Taborda
He was mentioned by Cabba in the European Portuguese dub of Dragon Ball Super
Are there any other references to real people in the various dubs around the world?

Yes, but which ones do they refer to? At least with that Miss Portugal 1997, Goku is referring to something specific.

Would need to check, but if memory serves I don't think any exact names or years were mentioned, so your probably right that these references wouldn't be specific enough for your thread.

Michael Jackson was indirectly mentioned in the LA Spanish of Dragon Ball Z Kai. He was mentioned by Burter.

Burter: Now what? Did he get lost in the woods?*
Jeice: Burter, behind you!
Burter: Aaah!
Goku: Hi.
Burter: What? Not even the king of pop surprises me!
Unlike the original LA Spanish dub of Dragon Ball Z, in Z Kai, Burter got a weird Cuban-like accent and sometimes he says the most random shit ever.
A little too late but yeah, I've been officially active in Kanzenshuu for ten years :)

So were the Ginyus able to add 2 + 2 together when they saw Bubbles on King Kai's planet then?

From the European Portuguese dub of Dragon Ball Super:
* In the Universe 6 arc, when Vegeta transforms into Super Saiyan Blue in front of Kyabe, Vegeta says he's "Super Warrior Wanda Stuart". Wanda Stuart is a Portuguese singer, TV host, actress and producer whose hair is dyed blue.
* In the pre-ToP arc, when Kale transforms into Super Saiyan Berserk, Kyabe comments that she looks like "Tarzan Taborda". Tarzan Taborda was a legendary Portuguese wrestler who won four European champion titles five World champion titles and never lost any wrestling watch in his native Portugal.

I heard something about Brooke Shields & Julia Roberts being mentioned in the Latin Spanish dub of the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai.

Jacky Cheung was mentioned in the Hong Kong Chinese version of the manga. Goku was even seen singing to the lyrics of his hit song "Loving You More Everyday" during the Tenkaichi Budokai.

The English dub of Dragon Ball also refers to Einstein at least twice in the Pilaf arc. In episode 1, when Goku finally figures out the pterodactyl isn’t Bulma’s friend he says “You’re a regular Einstein!”, and in I think it was episode 4, Bulma smacks Goku over the head after doing his pat pat thing on either Grandma Paozu or Pocowatha and when he asks why she did it, she responds with something like “Guess, Einstein!”
