My Dr. Slump journey

Post by GreatSaiyaJeff » Wed Jul 08, 2026 12:29 am

I apologize if this isn't the right place to post but I wanted to express how much I love Toriyama's humor. So about 20 years ago in highschool, I got the first 2 volumes on Dr. Slump and I remember enjoying them.

Flashforward to a few years ago, I got Toriyama's Manga Theater in its beautiful glory. It reminded me I needed to collect the rest of Dr. Slump. Last month, I finally got the last few volumes to complete the series and I decided to reread the first 2 volumes and just read volume 3 for the first time.

It's hilarious 😂 I've been chuckling to myself in every chapter. I had to reread some pages because the visual gags and jokes are great. Arale tasked to get Ramen but wounded up on a journey to get a Bra instead or the robber that couldn't catch a break from both Arale or the cops.

I'm looking forward to read volume 4 when I get the chance later this week. It's a shame some parts of the fandom just focus on power scaling and fights and they truly don't appreciate the humor Toriyama brought to this world.

While Dragonball is my favorite work

Dr. Slump feels like Toriyama's true masterpiece as he is definitely more in his element.

My Doctor Slump (& Dragon Ball) story involves my dad & I watching the Jackie Chan film My Lucky Stars & us trying to figure out what Arale was supposed to represent as due to our religious beliefs thought Gatchan at the time which we didn't no the name of was supposed to be one an angel of some kind.

Dr Slump and early Dragon Ball are both literary reminders that Toriyama’s work really, really isn’t meant to be taken that seriously. I like it here in Kanzenshuu, but doesn’t the absurdity of it all sometimes give you, I guess, cognitive dissonance? The idea that merchandise brands, entire wikis and heated canon debates have happened over the works of a goofy model plane enthusiast who drew cartoons of poop and ladies’ underwear.

Just started watchin Dr Slump mid 2025 & it has been soo hilariously cool & enjoyable watch

As with DragonBall, Dr Slump has this addictive vibe which I believe Toriyama has a gift to create

Regardless of its age, humor it's an enjoyable entertainin piece of work & would always come back to like DB

Just finished volume 9 ( halfway through the series) and I find it pretty hilarious how Senbie and Midori got married. He was just fantasizing about asking her to marry him and she said yes since she overheard in the bathroom 🤣🤣

Just a classic Toriyama joke 🤣

I wonder how much reading Dr. Slump can shade some new light on the crossover chapters in the Dragon Ball manga.
I guess reading those crossover chapters would feel much more "complete", much more heart-warming when you have lived a complete story of those featured characters, with complete backgrounds and hours of attachment.

Somebody should definately check how it different it feels when you go back to those chapters AFTER having discovered Dr. Slump for the first time.
