This is way better than og DBS by a mile, but thats hardly a metric of enjoyability since I find this portion unwatchable in OG DBS. Animation, art, soundtrack... needless to say levels above. Goku's characterization is the main draw for me. This is basically the Goku from the DBS manga: Slightly goofier than his Z Buu saga counterpart, but still clearly the same character that does not feel like a flanderization . Miles above DBS Goku.

But Beerus... sheesh, is Toei commited to removing every part of what made him so enjoyable in Battle of Gods?

I enjoy the pacing so far. The entire reason of this was to make it visually better, which they did. Sure, as others pointed out there are still some frames/scenes where it's not 10/10, but still.

I do hope, more than anything, that they remove the whole bit where Goku is a complete retard. Hard to tell since he was already acting stupid and King Kai had to remind him that he's a grown man.

Either way, the Dragon ball community is back, and that's always a good thing.

My favorite parts: Goku learning about Beerus by having to blackmail the answer out of Kaio, rather than Kaio just telling him. The tone, music placement and direction being whimsical and not overly serious since it's just a sparring match with some comic relief. The fight scene itself having no BGM, reinforcing the feeling of "oh shit, what is Beerus about to do" while Goku is over there shooting blanks. Goku being cocky in Super Saiyan 3 and telling Beerus he can dial it back to 2 if he wants, but then paying the price by lasting for literally one minute (and only because Beerus allowed it) before instantly getting tapped into a KO.

Oh wait, wrong show. That was all in the movie.
My thoughts on Dragon Ball Daima

And to close this post of the "new and improved" Super, I leave you with this:

That's a meaningless criticism. From a distance, it's obvious that the details aren't there—that's how every anime is. It's not a sign of poor artwork (which Super is full of), but simply a matter of production.
Buddy, this is only one example. This episode is filled with shots of characters looking butt-ugly, both at a distance and in your face. I can't help but notice the lack of detail because this is right in my face.

Image

It's IMPOSSIBLE for me not to notice how butt-ugly Goku looks, because the shot focuses on him, the rest is just an empty void with equally butt-ugly light effects that somehow look worse than a 40-year old anime.

Maybe I wouldn't be criticizing this if this production wasn't advertised as the "Enhanced version of Super." I mean, sure, looks better than the walking meme that was Episode #5 of the original Super, but damn, this franchise had seen better days.

And I really don't care about "This is just how it is on every anime." I don't settle for mediocrity.
I think you are being quite unreasonable and disingenuous here.

There is legit no issue, this is a far away shot, and it looks as it's intended.

You are not going to get a scaled down HD model of Goku powering up, that actually would look weird (OG Super did something like this already)

The proportions are absolutely right for what this shot is, you legit cannot ask for more, without entering "over animation" territory.

The episode clearly looks very polished, idk why you are calling it mediocrity when the storyboarding and choreography are better than the movie version.

Sure if long fights are not your thing and you prefer the story I can understand your frustrations, but what you are saying is simply untrue and quite an unfair criticism, since you are basically nitpicking.

This being said, I enjoyed this episode much more than the last, the lack of a narrator and the few scenes with no music did not feel as jarring as the last time, and I feel the goofiness and seriousness are well balanced.

I liked the way Goku approaches Beerus all serious, so you believe the scene is going to be tense, only to end up in Goku being his goofy self. It was a nice tonal shift and due to the whiplash kinda sells the humour a bit better since it feels like a curve ball.

I also enjoyed the additions of Beerus being so unbothered by Goku, he is legit just observing him as he moves.

He barely changes from how he was analyzing Goku's strength in base, showing how little impact does Super Saiyan inflict on him.

Honestly I'm surprised by the amount of show and don't tell in here, there's not really that much dialogue but the different shots do a good job at selling the body language.

Sad that they are taking so much slice of life lutz but that's kind off a given considering they are comprising the arc into 6 episodes.

That being said, next episode might suffer more from it, since it's supposed to be the boat party celebration, Beerus cannot stay threatening 24/7 since we know he became mad for a silly reason.
I really miss ma boy, Black :(

Speaking seriously: This episode bored the heck out of me.

The pacing was atrocious and I was begging the episode to end every single second I spent watching it, and what do you know, the episode ended and the story barely moved. 24 entire minutes dedicated to, what? 2-3 scenes, maybe? My god, what is this mess?

I wasn't that bothered with North Kaio's lackluster performance last episode, but this episode, it really shows how depressing the whole thing is. If "bringing Super closer to Toriyama's vision" means disrespecting his legacy by refusing to redub this mess and keep an old dying man's terrible performance intact to satisfy nostalgia fanboys, then thanks, I hate it. Two hoorays for capitalism!

And to close this post of the "new and improved" Super, I leave you with this:

Gonna agree with all of this.

This was the episode where they were supposed to go all out, supposed to prove that this remaster was worth it considering how infamous this scene was....

And it's not good. This is the improvement? Sure, it's not a complete embarrassment like the original Beerus vs Goku scene was, but this still feels not good to see in 2026 when we have stuff like JJK and DanDanDan and Chainsaw Man. This is fucking Dragonball, one of the most popular IPs of all time--and this is what they came up with?

Bored out of my mind watching this.

Long fights are not my thing, true. Good storytelling, pacing, humor, characterization, music, animation and the desire to be surprised and be entertained by creativity are, however.

So far, in these two episodes of this "new and improved Super," I have seen nothing original or creative that was worth my time. Heck, I would argue the original version of Super was more creative and original by bringing us the scenes of Vegeta spending time with his family and demonstrating a growth of character or a neat little gay joke with Beerus flashing Whis, things that we don't often see in this franchise and are infinitely more creative and enjoyable than the usual "Oh my god, he's so fast, I can barely see his movements!" shtick that Dragon Ball uses to the point of exhaustion.

I have rewatched the movie version after the first episode and...
These cute little dances that Beerus performs in the movie version have been far more enjoyable than these two episodes combined:

So yeah, I'm sorry, but I do think sucking all the whimsy out of a good movie to make it a "OMG DEE BEE ZEE BATTLE :o " for the lowest common denominator of a Dragon Ball fanboy to be making pure mediocrity in the name of capitalism.

...Oh, yeah. And I also think the animation looks bad, sorry. I don't buy the "it's just a long-distance shot" excuse. The same logic could be applied to all of the memetic bad shots of the original Episode #5.

You would think they would have Goku become Super Saiyan 4 to tie in things with Daima, but I think Toei doesn't consider the two to be connected with each other.

This is what I was talking about when I found it so weird that the first episode was attempting to make Beerus so scary. What makes both Beerus and Whis memorable characters is the fact that they are Toriyama level assholes. That's what's funny about Beerus. Hes a guy capable of destroying whole galaxies, and yet dude is more primarily concerned with stuffing his face and being extraodinarily petty. That's why he's fun. Even as someone who does not like Super, I recognize that Beerus is iconic.

Trying to make Beerus more sinister feels incredibly misguided.

I don't know why you are so hostile.

I agree that og Super had a lot more creativity and appreciated it's goofyness.

Like I said I understand you preferring story over long battles and being bored out of your mind due to it, and this new super being more focused on staying serious.

But you really don't need to be so moody about it.

Regardless of your opinion about whether the animation was good or bad.

You have to admit that picking up, far away shots that are actually perfectly fine, and using that to diss the episode, is incredibly disingenuous, and actually pretty lazy, like, low hanging fruit lazy.

You are not criticizing here you are nitpicking.

Kemuri has a much better point being disappointed at the choreography when comparing it to modern shonen like JJk or Chainsaw Man.

Sadly, outside of Broly and those few 2D animated seconds of DBS Superhero, Toei plays it really safe with Dragon Ball, they don't try breaking too much from, what I would call, the "DBZ fight look".

I would be marginally surprised if Dragon Ball ever got the amount of love One Piece has been getting on a regular basis.

This all being taken into account, and for what is worth, and for the objective they had for this episode, they did their job.
I really miss ma boy, Black :(

I have never said this one single shot was my problem with the whole episode.
I have said, however, that the episode was horribly paced and the animation doesn't look good.
I'll use another example: After Goku transforms into SSJ3 and tries hitting Beerus, notice there are multiple shots where his hair just stands perfectly still floating in mid-air. That is not good animation and I don't know how anybody can call it such.

Image

That is not nitpicking, that is me telling you the whole episode is the problem. The whole episode is bad/mediocre.
That it looks better than the original Super is not that much of a high bar to begin with.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. 'Bored' is exactly the word I'd use to describe it. It's as if they sucked all the soul out of Dragon Ball and sterilized it into some super serious DCU movie. I'm ok with cutting some of the filler, but some more lighthearted humor would have elevated the episode for me. This just felt like one long, boring battle and not much else to pad it out.imo

You are saying this but when you were called out on it, you doubled down on the same faraway shot.

That doesn't give the look that you were criticizing the pacing, which is a pretty fair assessment.

It gives the look that you are pretty much nitpicking things you don't like. And being Hyperbolic doesn't really help your case either.

I mean, I do agree that the hair looks static quite a lot.

Blame Yamamauro, this sort of thing would not happen under Shintani haha.

But then again this was the same problem the movie had.

Hopefully since I've heard Shintani is on it, Moro will be more lively.

While the episode passed the low bar that Episode 5 provided, this episode was still quite "mid" aesthetically and narratively

Also, what the fuck is going on with Beerus? This was a problem I had with the original Super TV anime, and it's present again. All the charm and whimsy that wonderfully balanced out with his more serious demeanour is completely absent here. Beerus is just a dull, generically antagonistic character. The Battle Of Gods movie still remains the best characterisation Beerus has ever gotten in modern Dragon Ball.

Nah dawg, this type of reaction would get you clowned back in the day  , you seriously cannot get this bothered by an obvious faraway shot, that's simply unreasonable criticism, you ARE being nitpicky:lol:

Idk why you even bring GT to this discussion, if I'm calling you out, for being petty over super, what makes you think I would react the same way you did with GT? Girl, I grew up with that show

Like someone else said before, even the Top tier animated shows from today, have shots like these.

I have this weird feeling that Daima wont be cross referenced at all until we get to Moro. Mostly because they said this Remake will use largely all reused voice lines so there’s no real room to include additional lore bits and voice work to connect Daima to Super.

The Moro arc however is obviously completely newly animated material that’s gonna require the Seiyus to actually work so there’s space for the head writers of the arc to squeeze in some lines about the demon realm or Raimus while Moro fights Dai-KaioShin-Boo or something. I don’t expect to ever see Daima’s SS4 again outside of video games though.

I'm going to be real y'all, I don't think Daima is EVER going to be mentioned again.

Because I feel Toei (or whoever is in charge now) doesn't really care, and will keep it as a different Dragon Ball continuity.

They will probably go safe and adapt the new arcs as close as they can to the manga, adding only additional "hype" shots like they are doing with the super remake.

I mean, if they gave Toyotaro free reign, I'm sure he would mention it, and maybe go full circle by combining Ultra Instinct and Ssj 4 thus canonizing Ssj 5, to Tablos's dismay

Well that was a nice improvement over the original! Super finally accomplished the goal of making a solid for an "expanded for TV" version of the fight that isn't melting on screen. For some reason I think I liked the colors a bit more than last week. Maybe I'm getting used to them? The pacing in this episode was also decent, and I like the tracks they decided to use. I can see what some folks mean about Beerus losing some of his quirks though. Did I look away at the wrong time or did we lose the "length of an anime episode" joke? At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I still doubt this version will surpass the film for me, but Super Beerus seems to be a solid rendition for those who haven't seen the film. Still need to explain the Pilaf gang though. Guess we'll find out next week or the week after.

Overall, the animation is an improvement over the infamous Episode 5 (which isn't that impressive, the bar was very low).

The story is still mediocre, and I never liked Beerus’s characterization in this arc, I much prefer his version from Battle of Gods.

Another downside was how obvious it was that they reused voice recordings from 2015, there are many moments with awkward silences where there’s only music and sound effects but no voices or reaction sounds. One scene that stands out is when Beerus yawns, but there’s no sound, just music.
