Jinzoningen - "Artificial Humans" or "Synthet

Post by MajinVejitaXV » Fri Jul 30, 2004 2:48 pm

Is this just a preference or is one more literal than the other? I ask because I was watching the Platinum EVA DVD that came out earlier this week, and I heard it translated as synthetic.

Call it curiousity, I'm trying to learn and little things like this come up ;p

It apparently literally translates as "Artificial Human", but there's no real English translation.... It's complicated..

Some good info.

As far as personal preferance; I like to call 13, 14, 15, 16, & 19 Androids, and 8, 17, 18 & 20 Artificial Humans. For me, the term "Cyborg" just didn't really feel right, since in sci-fi a lot of cyborgs were people who just had a few synthetic parts, while those Artificial Humans weren't much likey they were before.

I prefer to use the term "Artificial Humans", used in Polish manga. It's the most literal translation, and describes them well, without causing inconsistencies, like French "Cyborgs" or American "Androids".

That link was nice and summed it up good B-kun. I say androids for all of them since Artificial Humans is a lot to say and I don't have to say they're different all the time.

When I refer to them specifically, I have the habit of referring to them simply by number (Juuhachigou, Juunanagou, etc) unless speaking to a kid or something, then I say Android 18 or Android 17, but when referring to them as a whole, I say Artificial Humans.

I am a walking conundrum.

I just tend to say 17, 18, and so on.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

It's the same here. Mentioning their numbers is about the most neutral way to do it. Though, I say Artifical Humans when I have to address them as a whole. When it's to someone illiterate to the original Japanese version, or someone who reads Viz, I tend to say Androids. Pretty logical, I guess.

I tend to just use Androids all the time since a) Everyone knows that, and b) it's less of a mouthfull. But normally I just call them by their numbers.
