Daizenshuu Reviews

Post by Nyogo » Fri Jul 30, 2004 10:13 pm

If anybody has the "Forever", "Son Goku Densetsu", or the two Cardass books, could you give me a description of what's inside? I just want to know if they're worthy of a purchase.

Dragonball FOREVER is the companion book to Dragonball LANDMARK. It is essentially a guide to the second half of the manga (organized according to the volumes in the Japanese re-release), although it has many other things, including:
  • Favorite characters and items, as voted on by Japanese fans
  • Information about pretty much every character and item in the manga
  • Much information about Akira Toriyama (including a few questions from fans answered by the man himself)
  • Name puns, straight from the robot's mouth! Holy crap!
  • A gallery of color images pilfered from Daizenshuu 1
  • Stickers of the covers of all 34 DB Kanzenban volumes
  • And other miscellany
Sadly, it doesn't have the last 7 " Dragon Ball Children" illustrations (since LANDMARK had the first 10). I was really hoping to have them in a more permanent form. :(

As for Son Gokuu Densetsu, it's basically a guide to the DBZ anime, with special focus on the life and activities of Goku. There's info on friends, enemies, and story arcs (much of it in full color), as well as a face-to-face interview between Akira Toriyama and Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru (a longtime character designer for DBZ, who has done and still does most of Toei and Shueisha's non-Toriyama DB art, including the book's cover). Other, less-colorful features include:
  • A rundown of filler characters
  • The 30 or so highest-rated episodes of DBZ
  • An index of characters (filler and non-filler) that appear in the anime, with brief descriptions
  • And a complete episode title, description, and airdate list (including reasons why it didn't air during breaks in the rhythm).
So, yeah... it's a pretty awesome book for its size and price.

If you're interested, I could tell you about Tenka-ichi Densetsu, as well... 8)

As for the Carddass books, they basically have pictures of the Carddass trading cards made for the series. Some of them have really cool pictures on them, but the pics are also really small on each page.

I was really dissapointed with the Landmark and Forever books since I already own all of the Daizenshuu books. Sure they're a tad different, but not much.

Which one do you think is the best?

Last question, do they have anything on the movies in the "Son Goku Densetsu" book?

No, nothing on the movies; however, characters like Garlic Jr. and Haiya Dragon (who originated in the movies but later appeared on the show) are covered.

I just went to Animenation.com and they said that the Son Goku Densetsu book covers the movies, the TV specials, and even the Playdia games. Is that true?

Here's their description:

"This extensive reference guide to the Dragonball universe includes thousands of full color images and screenshots primarily focusing on Son Goku, from his first appearance in Dragonball to his final appearance in Dragonball GT. The coverage even includes offshoot and rare anime such as the Dragonball Z movies, TV specials, and even the Playdia video game. Contents include extensive character guides, a story guide to Dragonball Z, a rare look behind the scenes of Toei Animation, an interview with creator Akira Toriyama, three sheets of removable Dragonball decals, and much, much more."

Its true, but theres very little information on either the Playdia games or GT. About 2 or 3 pages.
