Why does Dragonball attract so many of... "Them"?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Well... a lot of these fans come off as really aggressive and since Dragon Ball is a show centered around fighting and contains a lot of injury and destruction, it probably does attract it's share of fans who simply have anger issues and power complexes. I don't think Dragon Ball is unhealthy, it's pure fantasy, but some people with issues to begin with may get a little too into that aspect of it and live vicariously through it. I do think the marketing encourages a bit of a attitude around it, but I doubt it's just that.

Um, I'm terrible with math so I've always tended to avoid power-level discussions altogether. >_>

(I do think the scouters are cool accessories though lately they remind me of those cell phone add-ons I see people walking around with on their ears--minus the eye piece. )

I haven't seen these math-loving fans around other than on random youtube comments when I'm watching the game openings.

The DB movie thread got locked!? Wow, I feel partially responsible so I'd like to collectively apoligize to the rest of the forum. There was somebody there who was instigating an arguement with a few people and I guss I took the bickering a little to far. Sorry

Shit happens bro.

But on topic, I am just glad to be around people at Daizex instead of YouTube people.

Yeah, ok, I get you now. So do you think if Dragonball was released in the correct order, with the original music, with a dead accurate script, voice acted by the best talent around and marketed intelligently/appropriately, do you think we'd have a more intelligent english speaking fan base?

I didn't read all of the first post because it started to get boring and repetitive.
The only thing that the guy said that was for sure right was that Goku got massive strength gains because he was the main character, but that is fairly obvious to all fans.

Don't feel bad. I was actually typing up something to the effect of "let's all remember to keep this civil and keep our comments constructive before the thread gets locked," only to click post and find it locked :p

There is no doubt in my mind that we would have been the better for it had we gotten the series in correct order. Even the manga release took the Z title and ran them as two seperate books. That's why I think the US is so Z-centric, and in casual fandom you tend to see non-alien characters scoffed at. I think it's the Z-first airing combined with the hyper-testosterone treatment that lead to Vegeta having such a large American fanbase. He's always been a popular character, but during the height of the dub TV airings it seemed like people thought he was the lead character. I think some official ad or maybe a DVD case once referred to the Z Senshi as "Vegeta and friends" while describing the search for Gero and his lab, so the marketing didn't help.

I know this isn't a spot on eample, as DB and Z is one big series, but the US order or release feels kind of like Angel being broadcast until season 4 or 5, and then Buffy season 1 starting up with the marketing of "see how it all began!"

It's alright, the last long-running "live action" thread got locked too. :( I'm sure we'll have a new thread for it once a trailer comes out. :3

It's so funny people are so hyped for the movie they are making fake dream trailers for it. I haven't been a huge movie fan (hell the Dark Knight is the first time I stumbled into a movie theater in a good two years) but I've never really experienced anything like this before.

It's so weird how a person can be so illiterate loud and rude abusing the hell out of the exclamation point then turn right around and create some awesome art.

With all of this talk of how a large number of fans that usually associate outside of this forum are commonly seen as rude, offensive or obnoxious (justifiably of course), I have come to wonder if people that are not members of this forum have a stereotypical image about us. We're a very organized and well monitored fan base that stays within the constraints of "well mannered" and "very knowledgeable" and I know that we take pride in not "tiipin lieck dis", but I wonder if people some people that don't like us don't because of that. I guess that this could be considered one of the more exclusive Dragonball discussion boards on the web, and I'm sure that a lot of people expect us to be snobby because of that, but really how many people like that are out there? We know for a fact that there are hoards and hoards of people that fall into Xyex's description of "them", but how many of "them" have reasons to dislike us as we do them? It's a known fact that we are a very opinionated group of fans (as is pretty much everyone), but perhaps are ability to discuss our opinions in a civilized manner is a reason for other fans to hate us.

That's what I was trying to avoid with my post, it's obvious that threads about the live action movie should be avoided except in the case of presenting or discussing new material or information.

Are you trying to say that we're considered the elitist of the Dragonball fandom?

I know "elitist" is typically looked upon as being a negative, but it makes me feel cool to be considered one. 8)

Well I think most of the points that I really wanted to make have been thoroughly covered by Kunzait_83. I will add that almost every fan community I've taken part in has been infested with "them", some much worse than Dragonball. Take for instance the Joss Whedon fan community. I'm almost positive that 90 percent of that community is made up of "them". I barely follow anything that is going on with Whedon because of his fans.

Kunzait_83 wrote:They’re absolutely right that it does of course, yet I know that I often wonder why so many of them feel apt to judge the show based solely on the dub when as anime fans they ought to know better than to do that. But when taking a step back and looking at the overall big picture; the typical fanbase that the show, as dubbed, attracts as well as FUNimation’s utterly relentless and ever present “THIS SHOW IS EXXXXTREEEEEEMMEEEEE!!!!” marketing style, it’s incredibly difficult for me to fault them for feeling alienated, backing slowly away, and going back to watching Eva and Bebop.
I have a problem with two groups of people with that attitude. You know that one person who's name I don't mention? She had an intense dislike of Dragon Ball based on dub exposure. But say "Card Captors sucks" to her and she could go off for nearly an hour on how you can't judge something on a shitty dub. I've seen plenty of fans who would rip on Dragon Ball like it was going out of style, but would have their own pet anime with a shitty dub (anything from Card Captor Sakura to Space Battleship Yamato to Yu-Gi-Oh! to you name it). Then there are people who don't have a bad dub but bitch anyway, but still give this kind of attitude towards DBZ, like some anti-dub Naruto fans I've talked to. But then, the people I'm thinking of in the latter case were on GameFAQs forums, and that could have more to do with the community there than with the fandom as a whole.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.
