Viz is really slow. Europe finished the manga years before America.

I got this yesterday, and I have to say, I'm really impressed. It made an already pretty good day even better, and I even said to my brother "Everything wrong that anyone has ever done... This totally makes up for it."

I was joking, of course, but Viz really stepped up with this one. It finally feels like they put something out for the "hardcore" fans.

I haven't had a chance to go through it too much (high school sucks like that), but it's on my shelf beside my Daizenshuu #7, and it looks pretty.

Is it at all sad that that's almost enough for me?

At any rate, though, if the quality would be like this, I have no issues with Viz releasing any other Daizenshuu.

Hate to somewhat necro post, but I figured it'd be okay what with the forum being down.

Looking through Viz's release of daizenshuu 1, you'll notice that included a number as well as a caption of where the image originated for each image. However, it looks like they goofed up with one image (the one with SSJ Gohan and his past "selves" in the background). It's numbered as 165 in Viz's release, while the back section that gives a little description of each image correctly refers to it as #207. It's on page 140 for anyone that wants to check.

Really, though, ignoring all these minute detail nitpicks, it's a perfect release overall. Though never having bought any of the daizenshuu before this, I was somewhat surprised with its size upon getting it. All the manga art books I've seen before were significantly taller. This one's more on the square-ish side.

I've been trying to buy this book in Toronto.
None of the Indigo bookstores are carrying it. Does anyone know where else in Toronto I can buy this book? I might need to check Chapters for it too but I hardly have time for it.

Most stores can order it for you. I had to get Barnes and Noble to special-order one of my DB Viz Bigs.

My local comic book store priced it at $50 bucks, sure they're a small store in a small town, but for someone that has a pristine copy of Daizenshuu 1 already (Shenlong times and all) I can't justify blowing that much money on a book I already own.

They're charging 2x MSRP on a brand new book that's still in print?

Wow, that's just...wow. I mean, I don't think there's any law against that but...wow. Who the hell would buy that? Especially with the price of $24.95 on the back cover? :P

Anyway, picked this up today. There's definitely something surreal, even owning all 7 of the HC Daizenshuu from Japan, to seeing this on the shelf of an American store. I flipped through it, looks like aside from some nitpicks* it's a very well done release. Here's hoping Viz keeps it up. I'd be willing to own two sets of Daizenshuu, as long as they don't play too fast and loose with the translations.

*Speaking of which, they can call the Nintendo Entertainment System the Famicom (a name not used over here)...but they can't render Mr. Satan as...well, Mr. Satan? Is it just me or is that...odd?

I forgot to mention that I live in Australia, the books have to be shipped over here, but even so that doesn't justify the price.

I'm surprised no one handled that Daizenshuu down in Australia. Mad man handles the anime. Who owns the property rights to the manga in Australia?

All American manga companies are extremely slow compared to European ones. In the US, the focus seems to be on getting as many series out as possible, while most European publishers focusing on finishing what they're actually publishing, and thus publish 4 or 5 series or so each at a time on a one-tankobon-a-month/bimonthly basis.

Madman have been putting out manga for the past year or so, however this doesn't include Dragonball or One Piece, which are the only two I really care about collecting at this stage.

So retailers have no choice but to import the books from the US, some places are more acceptable than others, the last Vizbig I picked up came in at $25 which isn't too bad, considering the cheapest you'll find a Viz tankobon brand new is about $15 bucks.
