Pioneer DBZ DVD Sale

Post by xzero » Mon Sep 01, 2008 9:40 am

I don't know if anyone's interested, but Game Music Online www.gamemusic.com is selling all of the Pioneer DVDs for $5.99/each. Here's the link to that page: http://www.gamemusic.com/cgi-bin/WebObj ... 26&did=151

This includes the first three movies (uncut I believe) and the Saiyan and Namek Sagas (edited). The only ones with the Japanese audio included are the movies, but for completionists, here's a great way to own the discontinued DVDs relatively cheaply.

What's the cost of delivery to the UK? I can't find it on the site. :(
I finally bought a gamecube. To bad they don't make any games for it now.

That would be a good deal if I didn't already own all of them.

On a side note, I missed this board...I'm glad it's back. haha
Trans rights, now!

I already own these DVDs, but I wanted to post to recommend to anyone that doesn't, take advantage of this sale. The Pioneer versions are way better than the Funi re-releases and quite rare to find at a reasonable price more and more.

Not to mention the cover artwork on each DVD is friggin' gorgeous, and they're relevant; another plus.

Does this set run the whole length of the series?

They cover the beginning of Dragonball Z up until Goku arrives on Namek to defeat Recoome.

Pros
- Nostalgic Value
- Arguably presenting a better voice acting cast
- Awesome DVD covers

Cons
- It's butchered, censored, and cut to the depths of hell

Well I already have those on DVD. I need ginyu through end of z for the pioneer version.

The Pros outweigh the Cons I'd say.

Pioneer/FUNi only ever released DVDs with footage up to the ginyu episodes. There's nothing else after that with the original Ocean dub cast released on DVD, or VHS. However, episodes spanning from the Trunks arc - End of Z with the Ocean dub were televised.

I realized that I didn't make myself clear enough in my last post. ^^; I meant the first 3 movies that I recoomend. Although the series eps have the Ocean cast, they're edited and dub-only.

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I remember how bad the edits were. But despite everything thats wrong with the dub, I still throughly enjoy it.

I dunno… the orange bricks certainly have more than their fair share of legitimately sucky picture quality issues, which every consumer ought to be rightly made aware of before purchasing… but at the end of the day they also have the full episodes unedited and un-tampered with, both visually and audibly via the original musical and vocal soundtracks, topped off with real English translations of the original scripts in full in the form of Simmons’ subs.

In short they actually contain Dragon Ball Z… and not the safe for the Sunday school crowd kiddie tripe that Saban tried to hawk the show as in the mid 90’s, bended and twisted specifically so as to tiptoe around offending the idiotic & infantile sensibilities of uppity, hyper paranoid tightasses.

I know I may not be in much of a position to talk as I don’t look back on this version of the show with as much fondness as most… but sometimes I really think that some people legitimately tend to forget just how indescribably awful the censorship & editing was.
Indeed. Like how Ten-san said "I see their parachutes, they're okay". How stupid did Saban think the viewing public was/is?

Since they don't have the Pioneer Movie 3 pack, I won't be buying anything on there. I have no attachment to the Saban/Funi episodes at all.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

$5.99 to hear the next dimension again? That's a steal considering that these will be rare in the distant future.

I still run across these DVD's from time to time. Never in a local store, but in Mall FYEs and such in a few towns over. I am always tempted to buy them just for nostalgia purposes, but they are always overpriced and used.

Hm, I might take advantage of this. I've got the Dead Zone and World's Strongest Pioneer DVDs, but I still need Tree of Might. Thing is, ever since the Funimation re-release, it can be hard to know what exactly you're buying online. Something might be advertised as Tree of Might from 1997 but you could easily wind up getting the new Funimation release. I dunno, I guess I'm paranoid.

Either way, since everything here is from the Pioneer era and the Tree of Might user review states both audio tracks have the original score, then I'd say this is definitley it.
