I wanna bring up something up that was said in episode 40. Meri said that, something like, "Gohan never really goes back to think about that he is responsible for the deaths of a lot of his friends(Piccolo, Tien, and his own father.)"

That is arguable...
In episode 159, Cell is Complete. Granted this is a filler scene, right before Gohan becomes a Super Saiyajin, he does recount this, and more vividly in the dub. He knows he is responsible for Piccolo's death, and he kinda blames himself for Tien, Chaozu, and Yamcha's deaths. This blame pushes Gohan over the edge, something we never see in the manga.

I find it very powerful!

I always liked that too, even if back when I saw it I was stunned Gohan went SSJ then (I'd thought he did so at Cell originally).

Yeah, I always thought the same thing. Then episode 159 really filled some gaps for me.
