Thank you very much for giving me your thoughts on this subject. I now know of my options. If I had just wanted the color pages, I could finish collecting Dr. Slump while I wait for the VIZBIGS to come out. However, seeing as all of Dragonball is already out, I see no sense in me waiting when I could already be reading the later chapters.

That'd be an affirmative on both counts! But to be honest - not that it's really much of a surprise - my familiarity with the word "yatsura" is pretty much limited to what I've read and been told, as amply demonstrated elsewhere wrt "nakama." So, yeah. *g*

Again, thank you for taking the time to explain everything! I really appreciate it. :)

This is just me, but I prefer to collect things in their original format. Volume by Volume. I'm only 8 Volumes into Rurouni Kenshin but I'm still going to go with the Tankobon over the VizBig...So Tankobon all the way. But that's just me.

Even though I'm buying the VIZBIG editions, I still recommend the Tankobon books overall. I own Viz's entire release of the Tankobon, and it's pretty sweet.

The tankobon:
1) All of the manga is released.
2) Some edits, but still 99% intact. Also, no color pages. But the Japanese releases didn't have them either.
3) Accurate translations: The best treatment of DB/Z in the US.
4) You can find them really cheap at used bookstores on online. I know you can get them brand new on Amazon for $1-$2 from some 3rd-party sellers.
5) Complete original covers & spine images, just like the orignal.

The VIZBIG:
1) Color pages, but not ALL of the color pages.
2) More art edits than the Tankobon, moreso in DB than DBZ.
3) Some edits made of the dialogue, mostly censoring profanity and sexual humor.
4) 3-tankobon-in-1-book for $18. It's actually a great deal for the money, especially considering the MSRP of the tankobon.
5) Generic covers & spine images.

They're both good, but the Tankobon wins overall.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I'm surprised you didn't bring the print quality up, it's the reason I'm buying the Vizbig editions.

The Tankobon are printed on extremely cheap paper, and the print quality suffers because of this, the Vizbig however have a much glossier print and look a great deal nicer.

I dislike the covers on the Vizbigs, but I do own Daizenshuu 1, so it's not like I can't look at them when I want too.

Am I the only one who can't find the VIZ BIG editions in any store? I mean I already have all the of Tankobon, so I don't really have any interest in picking them up, but I still can't find them. I saw one at a Borders book store that's like 40 miles from my house, but that's it. I have several Barnes and Noble's very close to me, yet they never, and I mean never, have them. I also can never find DBZ toys. My local Toy's R us has a few every once and a while, but no other store, anywhere in my area, and I live like 20 miles outside of New York City.

That's weird. I can easily find VizBigs, but the Daizenshuu is either not in stock or hidden on the far side of the store and priced at a $10 premium.

Is it stupid that my biggest issue with the VizBigs is the lack of a spine image?

It bothers me as well, even just a scroll that spells out "Dragonball" would have been sufficient, instead they took random drawings for the manga, and added a single colour for instance in DBZ Vizbig volume #2 the spine image Goku's wristbands are coloured red.

I dislike the covers, I don't like the spines, but at the end of the day it's whats inside that matters, and I sure as hell can't be bothered tracking down various prints of the tankobon if it means I'll just be getting a collection that is only slightly less edited.

Yeah, exactly! Honestly, the reason I'm getting the Viz Bigs is just...the print is so crisp, the paper is so nice, and there really isn't anything more aesthetically pleasing on a page than a color Dragonball page. I just absolutely love the color pages. And I really wish that they kept all of them, but I suppose a Dragonball fan will never get what they want in full. ;)

I'm questioning just picking up the first one because my issue 1 and 2 although mostly uncensored are in awful condition. I was going to wait it out until the hardcover Vizbigs to see if they were uncensored but maybe I should just go ahead and buy it.

As in the 3rd wave of the tankobon? Which nonetheless are more uncensored then these correct? I believe they changed a lot of Roshi's perverted dialouge and Bulma's middle finger among other things in the Vizbig versions only.

We have no idea yet, it would be nice if they were completely unedited (I would probably nab them), but I wouldn't be surprised if Viz stuck with edits from the most recent printing of the books.

As for Roshi's dialog, I don't own the original releases, but in the Vizbig "Puff Puff" (or Pafu-Pafu) seems intact, but again I can't be sure.

Has that been confirmed? Because we know that the hardcover editions will have colored pages and be rated "T" (both of which weren't present in the tankoubon).

Oh really? If you own the Vizbig (or anyone else for that matter) can you check volume 2 at the point where Bulma "pays Roshi" for putting out frying pan mountain, in the 3rd wave the "puff puff" dialouge was replaced with stuff like "don't you want to poke at them?" or during the scene where Bulma and Roshi are behind a wall and all you can see are their word bubbles she said stuff such as "I'm a growing girl!"

In the VizBig, we get "Oh? You just want to poke at them? Wouldn't you rather get to Puff Puff?". I'm not exactly sure what may have been changed, but we have the words "puff puff" and some view of Oolong-Bulma revealing her chest from the side.

Thanks a bunch, I was indeed wrong about the poking part those exact lines are in the 2nd mostly uncensored wave also, it's been awhile since I've read through those volumes so please excuse that slip up. I'm sure the 3rd wave had a censor for the puff puff scene though I remember it being perverted also and me sitting there wondering why they would bother to change a perverted line into something as equally as perverted.

Do you know what it looked like originally? This is definitely perverse, and there are word bubbles with a splatter of nose blood behind them.

Okay I'm just going to copy down the dialouge starting with Oolong successfully transforming into Bulma and any notable visual gags that may be censored and you can tell me.

Transformed Oolong: Okay...NOW?!! You can't complain about this!!!
Bulma:*Gasp* What a shock! I was about to ask what a movie goddess was doing in this waste-land...!!
T.O:Oh Come off it...*calling to Roshi* HEL-LO-O-O-O! *Thinking to himself* I actually think this old master is even Sleazier then me!
Roshi: You bad bad girl you kept me waaaaiting!!
T.O: Oh I'm SO sorry!
Roshi: O-Okay then L-Let me at em...!
T.O: Oh come now you mean you really just want to poke at them? Wouldn't you rather get to Puff Puff
Roshi: P-Puff...P-Puff...?
T.O: You put your face right in between... *points to chest* ...And go "Puff Puff!"
Roshi: Puff-Puff!!!
Bulma: You idiot what're you doing to me?!
T.O: *Pulls down top revealing her breasts* Ta-Daa Just Puff away!

Undefined Dialogue bubbles go-
Bubble 1: Just Puff Away!
Bubble 2: UHH!!
Bubble 3: PUFF PUFF PUFF!
Bubble 4: Whuuh!!
Bubble 5: Where the puffing never stops!
Bubble 6: GWAAH!!!

Yes there is blood spurting off the panel in the uncensored version too....I always say wall because this all took place behind a wall in the anime version IIRC.

That is exactly what is in my VizBig copy. You confused me a bit with the wall and the "just poke" bit, but yes. xD
