I think it's great that we have Sabat and the Crane Hermit's/Korin's VA on the movie too.JulieYBM wrote:Not that many care but this was Sabat on his hopes for the Dragonball film.
Honestly, I am trying not to care much about the film. I will be happy if the rumors of Sabat joining the cast are true. I do not blame the dub on the actors, I blame it on the writing direction and I'm forced to cut them some slack as the dub comes from roots in the Great Age of Anime Americanization. While I agree some of the voice work is not exactly great--espicially the old recordings--the voices have legions of fans and are not trying to bring fans of the original casts any sort of pain.

The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Let's just hope that if the third movie is made and Freeza is CG that he won't be voiced by Linda Young.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

This movie looks like it's got a fatal case of Executive Meddling.
I can tolerate quite a few aesthetic changes when there's a transition from 2D animation to live acting; those are to be expected, and any sane person would concede there are some things that just can't be done with live action (i.e., Goku's hair). But there's a limit to what you can get away with when you're adapting a story. Although I wasn't completely happy with what Peter Jackson did to LotR, at least he limited himself, for the most part, to pruning out extraneous stuff (for example Tom Bombadil, or Pippin chilling with the guard and his son in Minas Tirith).
The whole High School thing, and inserting an original character at the same time they're omitting canon ones, killed my interest in the movie. I haven't even seen/read most of Dragonball, and certainly not any parts with the adult Goku, and I can't bear to read any more about the "awesome" new stuff they're sticking into the movie, as though they're better writers than Akira Toriyama himself. What would he know, he's only sold millions of copies of the manga and the anime series based on it globally for nearly a quarter of a century... >=(
Sorry if I've rehashed points already raised earlier in the thread, but 24+ pages is a bit much.

No offense to the man at all, but there's a good chance they ARE as good or better writers than Mr. "Make-It-Up-As-I-Go-Along." Even if it is just condensing things into a 2-hour script.

Plot Synopsis translated from a Japanese magazine at dbthemovie.com
Story
After Grandpa Gohan’s dying request, Goku starts on a journey to find Master Roshi and gather the seven Dragon Balls to prevent the desire of Lord Piccolo to take over the world. In the course of his journey, Goku meets Bulma and using her Dragon Radar, they find Dragon Balls on the way. Goku arrives to Master Roshi, and he fights with Roshi. Looking at Goku’s fighting technique, Roshi finds that Goku is a grandson of Gohan. Master Roshi was Gohan’s master. Goku receives rigorous training from Master Roshi, and after a long journey, Goku approaches Lord Piccolo for the last time.
Yeah I can already tell the High School bit is gonna take up like 65 % of the movie.

Actually Movieverse Piccolo kinda looks like Freeza. Just a little bit. Like if his skin was all white and you added that purple spot on his head....

There's absolutely no reason to put in a high school at that point in the story, at least not one that Goku attends (I could POSSIBLY see Chichi attending one since she becomes so adamant about education later into the series). It's absolutely out of character for Goku, and in that respect, Toriyama absolutely wipes the floor with these guys. Goku spent the latter part of his childhood alone in the wilderness living off the land. He can get food and shelter all by himself. What need could he possibly have for an education? He'd rather be fighting than studying anyways.SSj Kaboom wrote:No offense to the man at all, but there's a good chance they ARE as good or better writers than Mr. "Make-It-Up-As-I-Go-Along." If they really wanted to do a high school story, why not use Gohan's? Hell, superhero movies have been really popular lately. I'm sure they could've gotten a lot of mileage out of the Saiyaman arc. They could've tweaked it quite a bit without upsetting fans since it was mostly fluff anyways. Videl and Ireeza could fit the roles that they want Chichi and Emi to fill to a T.

Wait aren't we getting ahead of ourselves ? What about Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta ?

Alright since people are all poo poo on redesigns, I took it up to myself to try and redesign Vegeta and Nappa to be "More Realistic"

I am pretty satisfied with this, although my scanner picked up almost NONE of my grayscale work which really made them pop.

Big Version so you can check out the details yourself.

Grandpa Gohan taught him basic reading and writing. Later on, Roshi further tutored both Goku and Krillin. Goku getting some form of a basic education isn't the heresy everyone's making it out to be. Innocence and naivety =/= "stupid."Musume wrote:What need could he possibly have for an education? He'd rather be fighting than studying anyways.
And while it may still be a bit "out of place," it's not "out of character" for Goku. I've said this time and time again, but everything we've heard about Goku's character shows that it's still intact, despite the unfamiliar setting. He's described as kind, gentle, always wanting to help people, as well as extremely strong and proficient at martial arts.
But if you live your childhood out in the country, not having much contact with anyone but the elderly man who raised you to be kind, chivalrous, and trusting, what would happen if you were suddenly plunked into a school? Teenagers these days are vicious and unforgiving, and you'd be labeled a naive, socially awkward "goody two-shoes." Nobody cares about much of anything aside from your social status. So unless you were a jock or something in addition to that, you'd be immediately grouped in with the unpopular kids.
Since he's more responsible than to show off his kung-fu at school (though it seems some of the would-be bullies get what's coming to them eventually), Goku's stuck in that boat, though he likely wouldn't even notice, or care even if he did. His old friend Chi-chi talks to him all the time, so who cares?
I've said it before, but I'm kind of looking forward to the little school and social circle-related portions. Not nearly as much as the meat of the movie, but I still want to see for myself how Goku works in this environment, rather than jump to conclusions and think it'll suck just because it's "not where he should be."
Like he proved to us in Movie 8, "you can take Goku out of the mountains, but you can't take the mountains out of Goku."
EDIT:
Very nice designs, omega. One or two things I thought of, though.
- They'd probably be wearing some form of scouters.
- Overall, since this first movie DOES seem to be taking a very fantasy, kung-fu feel after all, Vegeta and Nappa's (and likewise most of the rest of Freeza's forces) looks would probably be more sci-fi and technology based in contrast, just like in the series. Your designs... I dunno, something about them, they just look like samurai armor or something. In short, up the technology a few levels.

Well, my concept was two huge shoulder pads would look dumb, so i reduced the size, and made it only one as I had the idea of a shoulder shield/ram type thing.Big Momma wrote:Because its EEEEDDDDGGGYYYY! :ORocketman wrote:Why only one shoulder?
