Good point...so I guess it's not too far fetched of a notion that Piccolo would stumble upon a bible or a church ceremony as a child and hear/read said story.Wojak wrote:

I think that in Goku and the other's area, there are monks ect. that believe in Buddhism or something (Kuririn's spots on his forehead).
Maybe on another part of the Dragonball-world, Christianity exists.
In the whole, Toriyama didn't incorporate too much religion into Dragonball, I think. Most of it was mythological and cultural things.
No more time for Daizex. Goodbye folks!

The whole 'David and Goliath' line has always baffled me the most because Pic is a freaking deamon and wouldn't be reading a bible/near a church/excetera and damn, touching one would possibly burn him o_O
And from what I remember, in the manga at least all he says there is "The earth... doesn't go down so easily." That was a cool line and completely acceptable to a Western audience. And Pic's like 7 feet tall. Seriously, why did they change it? Besides the obvious.

It's just the dub's normal lack of grasping the nuances of Piccolo's personality. It's just like how dub Piccolo tried to sit down with Raditz for tea time while Japanese Piccolo told Raditz to suck his non-existent green ****. Piccolo is the former big bad. Not only that, but he still thinks he IS the big bad, confusingly new "emotions" not withstanding.
I also see Piccolo a lot like Bowser in Mario RPG. Y'know how Bowser needs Mario's help, but he would never admit it? So instead he "allows" Mario to join the Koopa Troop? While from our perspective, Piccolo sided with the Z Senshi for the Saiyan conflict, I believe in his mind he was "allowing" them to fight with him.
So in this case I agree, Piccolo referring to the strength of him and his makeshift little band of cronies is more fitting than him using bible stories to tout himself as "the little guy."

I meant when he was a child before Piccolo and Kami separated, didn't he roam the Earth and learn about it? Or hell even when Piccolo was reincarnated/ born again/ spit up by a big ugly lookin' demon he could have heard that story. I don't think bible versus bring Piccolo down or Upa could have just made a cross again and killed him.Velasa wrote:The whole 'David and Goliath' line has always baffled me the most because Pic is a freaking deamon and wouldn't be reading a bible/near a church/excetera and damn, touching one would possibly burn him o_O

I don't mean hearing someone say words would say him. But touching a holy object is often showed to have a less than happy effect on deamons, which the Daimaous fit well along the line with. Course, this is just something the group of Nameccian fans I've spent the last... nine years with has folded into our fannon, along with lots of other small notes that aren't the topic at hand.
I don't think the Child of Kattatsu or little Piccolo would have heard bible verses unless someone was trying to exorcise them, with their appearances and how people tend to react to tiny deamons.

Well I guess the Z fighters should have brought some Holy Water and a cross to the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. Why would holy items or a bible hurt Piccolo? It's been proven all religion is wrong in the Dragonworld because God is nothing more then a lazy bastard looking at earth from a giant tower with a racial stereotype slave. Therefore all the holy items would be moot and...not-so-holy because they have no mystical force behind them.
So you don't think Piccolo could have ever stumbled upon an outside church ceremony in his some odd years of living?

So that's fannon, like the chocolate thing and the clans. We needed to flesh material out and did so mixing things from multiple sources. And it wouldn't work on Pic quite so well as Daimaou anyway because he isn't so strictly Demonic in nature. So you can ignore that if you like, but him spouting western religious verses is still ridiculous when all he was doing was talking about the Earth being stronger than that.
And Popo is a djin. Not Sambo. He's a dijin and he's best friends with god and he's awesome so I shall not hear such dissing of him.
And there are still holy items, just not the traditional westyern ones. There are distinctly Dragonball holy items, like sacred water and nyoibo and whatnot.

Right but A. Your fanon isn't canon, especially if you can't back it up with canon points from the story B. neither of those holy items matter to piccolo and C. Are you really denying Mr.Popo is a racial stereotype...really? He is a flat out sambo black face stereotype, it just doesn't matter as much as Japan and I can respect that but you can't deny that Mr.Popo is a racist portrayal of black people c'mon pitch black face and big red lips.Velasa wrote:

It's not the first time Toriyama made racist black looking people with huge lips.

Almost all Toriyama background characters look ridiculous- which includes the occasional black people. Mr. Popo is not African- he's a dijin. Thus the flying carpet, turban, genie-shoes, magical abilities, excetera.
Note the possibly, and how off the bat whe n you asked I said that it was moreso a note the group I was in had made. And would Upa's use of a cross against another demonic figure be useable as evidence of possibility that deamons still don't like holy artifacts and wouldn't be hanging out in a church or with western holy people?Pic is a freaking deamon and wouldn't be reading a bible/near a church/excetera and damn, touching one would possibly burn him o_O

I didn't know you can avoid racist character designs by calling them different names.
Anyway nobody said anything about him hanging out in a church.
P.S
Noooo similarities to a Sambo

Yes, Dracula is not a deamon. But he is a comparable dark-creature who's shown having an aversion to Western holy objects. And that's still not what he freaking said and it's never been a good line when all he was freaking doing was talking about the Earth and FUNi wanted to make a morality play out of it so they made a deamon spout about a bible story. A seven-foot deamon, in a story where the little guy wins nonetheless. I hate that line.
As for Mr. Popo? Toriyama was not being evil or racist or vindictive. He was living in Japan in the 1980's and by designing the character he was just making someone who looks as silly and exaggerated as all of his other backgrounds characters (hello, dog king of the world and random men with tiger heads and superfat women in sunhats) with a difference that he was dark skinned and so he got big lips via said exaggeration. You're making it sound as if he spent time engineering a horrible character to hurt people. If you look in Daizenshuu 4's foldout you'll see there were a bunch of little ideas he had for Kami's assistant/confidant and only one of them is this little dark skinned djin guy, so he didn't set out to make a racist stereotype. That is why this gets on my nerves so much and why I have to get into this with people as much as I do.

Again I will constantly disagree with that. Toriyama did draw black characters iin ways that you don't see black character HOWEVER it's not like the characters in Dragon Ball are spittin' images of everybody in real life. That's like complaining about this picture of Condoleezza Rice because it looks like a black stereotype even though it's a frickin caricature and it's supposed to make you look retarded no matter what your race is.NeptuneKai wrote:Noooo similarities to a Sambo

And Mr. Popo looks nothing like the other Black characters that Toriyama draws.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.
