Say what? I'll give you Buffy, but then this movie is about DEMON King Piccolo, so that's a no brainer comparison anyway. And Farscape was all over the place with it's designs, so meh there.Captain Awesome wrote:It would look right at home in something like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or Farscape, but I really don't think it's fitting for something like Dragonball.
But saying it doesn't fit Dragonball?
What?
The same series that had a devil and a mummy and demon spawn and Saibamen and those fake Namek aliens and Monster Zarbon and all those weird looking Freeza alien lackies and 1st form Cell and Yakon and movies like DB movies 1 and 2 and other movies with beings like Garlic Jr. and his henchmen and the Bio-men in movie 2 and the winged orange guy and the little green guy from movie 4 and all the enemies and Bio-Brolly from movie 11 and the zombies of movie 12 and freaking Hildegarn.
And they don't fit?
What?

I agree with the Cap'n, but we'll see how they work in action. The screens just suggest average demon to be beat on.
I don't know if I'm describing this right.
Speaking specifically of Daimao's henchmen (since we should be comparing these to Drum, Piano, Cymbal, etc, and not the entire rest of the series' fodder), I'm just having trouble picturing them in a DB-ish fight. They feel more like something outta the live-action Guyver films (which themselves had different-feeling combat scenarios compared to their source material). I dunno if that's the case here, I'm just making an observation off of the pics.
And guys, seriously, tone down the defensiveness. I've said extreme anti's need to calm down, but the opposite holds true too. The "Happy Sunshine Cult" routine is a little creepy. I mean, we're seriously having a debate stemming from defensiveness over the fact that a couple of people have compared the generic fodder monsters in this film to a respected Japanese franchise built around using generic fodder monsters?

Onikage, Power Rangers has pretty much been given a really bad reputation to Sentai in the US. The connotation is there. Especially since one of the major criticisms of the live-action Spider-Man film was that the Green Goblin "looked like a freaking Power Ranger".
I'm just surprised that people can be defensive about attacking a movie that nobody has seen yet.

That's about what I expect from them, too. Maybe a bit more brains (these things were described as 'Namekian ninjas' previously) than what the Saibamen showed, but the same basic function.SSj Kaboom wrote:I'm picturing them acting and fighting a lot like Saibamen more than anything else.
I'm sorry, but I have to call nonsense on this. Dragonball is full of all kinds of odd designs, which was my point in my previous post, that there really isn't anything that doesn't fit. I mean, hell, Freeza's 3rd form was a an Alien homage. Freaking Alien.I'm talking from a design perspective, not the fact that it's demon spawn, I think the whole asymmetrical three eyed look doesn't really fit the bill for a creature from the Dragonball universe.
I'm not being defensive. I'm just calling nonsense on nonsense. I mean, it's one thing to go "these guys kind of look like mutant puddy patrol" and another to go "this movie is starting to feel like Power Rangers" or "guess Goku's going to Angel Grove high" or megazord jokes. Not to mention the idea that these guys can't 'fit' in Dragonball when the series has had its fair share of freaky looking characters, some of which a freakier than these guys. And guys, seriously, tone down the defensiveness. And Sentai and Toku shows in general are far from respected in the US. You've got your handful of fans who like and respect the genre but the vast majority looks down on it more they do Dragonball fanboys and "Narutards" combined. If you ever see a comparison between something and Power Rangers by an American, asume they're making fun of it, it'll save you time. Kind of sad, really, but that's the way it is.

I'm not sure if these guys are the "ninja" we were privy to. Perhaps the ninja are led by Mai, and once Piccolo's released, he starts spawning these guys instead, who are much more effective. But I don't really know; we'll have to wait and see.Xyex wrote:.SSj Kaboom wrote:I'm picturing them acting and fighting a lot like Saibamen more than anything else.

Then again, if there WERE any actual ninja, we might have caught a glimpse of them by now... Or maybe not, if they're good.

Not that people saying "this movie is starting to feel like Power Rangers" is anything to be irritated by, no matter how many times its been said.

That “assume its negative” mindset would be totally and perfectly understandable if this were a normal, mainstream forum… except it isn’t. Daizex is an anime forum populated largely by complete dorks for not just Dragon Ball, but also various other Japanese-related stuff as well, including Tokusatsu; I mean seriously, how many fanboys and fangirls around these parts practically swoon and cream themselves at the slightest mention of the word “Kiva”?Xyex wrote:And Sentai and Toku shows in general are far from respected in the US. You’d think that the sort of people who frequent a place like this would know better than to take a defensive stance at a Tokusatsu comparison/reference and instinctually assume it to hold a negative connotation automatically.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

They'll probably behave in the same vein..hectic, blurred movements, etc. I can't imagine how else they'd behave, without the use of a little CG. Otherwise, they'd just look like an upgraded Putty Patrol wandering around.

Which would have been my assumption prior to the comments in this thread. It'd be different if we were looking at a finished final in motion product. But we're not. This is one of my issues with the complaints I see in this thread. People jump five miles ahead of the information we've got and it gets rather annoying.SonEric84 wrote:I can't speak for anyone else, but I know I wasn't being an ass about the comparison. This isn't directed at you specifically, by the way. Just a general observation of a persisting pet peeve of mine that has constantly plagued not only these movie threads but even several of the video game threads that have occured over the years.

It's not that I don't absolutely LOVE Tokusatsu and Super Sentai shows. Even before I knew what Super Sentai WAS, I was in love with the genre. Before I knew how to tell time, I had an internal clock set to go off when Big Bad Beetle Borgs came on. No matter what I was doing, I'd be able to think "Oh, wow, it's time for Beetle Borgs!"Kunzait_83 wrote: That “assume its negative” mindset would be totally and perfectly understandable if this were a normal, mainstream forum… except it isn’t. ...I still don't know how I did that.
But besides that point, I know there is a negative connotation to the genre. Much like the negative DBZ connotation exists even in places where gay elves are accepted as commonplace and highly intellectual.
So, the idea that the Daizex guys wouldn't share the same sentiment, honestly, didn't cross my mind.
I just chuckled and thought "If it's good, that's great. If it's not, it's not going to change the original that I love. So I'm good either way."
But I do think a lot of people are getting all bent out of shape over something that is completely trivial and not done yet.
EDIT: How the hell did I get myself turned around like that?
I don't know what point I'm trying to argue anymore. xD

I can't speak for anyone else, but I WASN'T COMPLAINING. I made a vague comparison in an attempt at humor that worked for some and didn't for others. I didn't make the megazord joke or any of the other stuff, so I can't answer for that. But like Kunzait said, this is a hall of dorkitude, not a mainstream forum. I compared the main villain to a kamen rider and the only comment I got was a positive, so I dunno why comparison of the low-level bad guys to low-level Sentai bad guys has caused such an uproar. I really don't care what the mainstream thinks of Power Rangers. They keep making 'em, so clearly SOMEONE likes them. And I'm a toku fanboy who still sometimes watches PR. I'm not some mainstream anti-PR flamer.
So for future notice, any comparison I make to PR or SS or anything of the like should not be taken as an insult.
Unless I'm talking about GoGo V/ Lightspeed Rescue. Fuck both of those shows.
Power Rangers Turbo too, while we're at it.
And Jungle Fury, though Gekiranger is totally badass.

But all anyone has said is "Wow. That monster looks exactly like a Power Rangers villain". Which it does. It looks like the guy in the suit is going to have restricted movement because of the suit too IMO...just like the Power Ranger villains.Xyex wrote: People jump five miles ahead of the information we've got and it gets rather annoying.
