Fights in the Manga.
Hello, long time lurker on the boards and first time poster.
I was just wondering what people here think of fights in the Manga compared with the fights in the Anime.
I always thought that the Manga version of the fights demonstrated the speed and intensity of the fights far better than the Anime.
I'll take the Goku and Ginyu fight as an example.
In the Anime the fight doesn't look particularly fast. In fact it looks slower and much more underpowered than the Goku vs. Piccolo fight earlier in the Anime.
In the Manga all the panels convey incredible speed and power. I don't know how it was achieved with a static picture but Goku looks like he's moving his body at hundreds of kilometres per hour, especially when he moves his head to dodge.
In the Anime I can barely ever see the results of their training besides the Ki explosions getting bigger. Their actually speed, agility and physical power never seems to increase that much, going by the animation.
So what do you guys think?

Re: Fights in the Manga.
I agree that the manga generally does a better job of portraying speed and power. Fat Buu vs. SSJ3 Goku looked great in the manga -- the two really seemed like they were the strongest fighters in the universe. In the anime, it had a lot of generic "zip-thwack-zip-thwack" stuff that didn't properly illustrate their power. Parts of the battle actually seemed less energetic than the fighting on Namek.
There are exceptions to that, though. The final Kamehameha duel between Cell and Gohan seemed more powerful to me in the anime. I'm sure there are a few other examples I'm forgetting.

I have to agree that the SSJ2 Gohan KameHameHa is far better in the Anime. The Manga doesn't show enough of the damage that the blast is doing to the landscape.
Basically I think:
Anime:Energy attacks are far better in general. They just look more epic.
Manga:Physical fights are superior to the Anime. Speed and Strength seem to match what we would expect from the characters at this point.
SSJ3 Goku looks far more powerful than SSJ1 Goku from the Freeza Saga, rather than seeming the exact same.

To me everything was pure E gold in the manga. I found the manga ki blasts were just as good if not better than the anime. The SSJ2 Gohan Kamehameha seemed better to me in the manga since the anime filler scenes downplayed everybody else's strength. Instead of Gohan seeming stronger, everybody else seemed weaker.

Oh, no no no no no no no. Everyone helping Gohan made that scene for me. First Piccolo going to help, and then everyone else realising that, even if they weren't strong enough to hurt Cell, they had to at least try. It tears me up, that bit, and is one of my favourite DB moments ever.
I'm not taking away from the Gohan stuff, which was also great. But in the manga, all Kuririn and co do is hang around at the side, get beat up by the Cell jnrs, and then watch Gohan (and Vegeta) save the day. In the anime, they try and help. And that makes them worthwhile as characters.
So, yay for anime filler!

Totally agreed. I absolutely loved how they all got their little chance to shine. They kept getting right back up and firing away, too. Their little monologues about why they're fighting / helping Goku (indirectly) is just heart-warming and touching beyond belief.PsyLiam wrote:Oh, no no no no no no no. I feel manga usually does give a better depiction of fights than anime, but not always. For instance, I made sure I read Naruto before I would watch the scenes in the anime. Everything just had more impact in the manga. Zabuza slicing Gato's head off (which was edited in the anime), Shikamaru beating some girl who's name escapes me in the 3rd test preliminaries by making her slam her head into the wall, the list goes on.
The fights in Dragon Ball are better in the manga, but the moments are better in the anime. Super Saiyajin 2 Gohan, the aforementioned assisted KameHameHa against Cell, it's all so much more powerful in motion with the appropriate music backing it up.

I agree that most of the time, the manga is superior to the anime with the fight scenes, but there are a few fights in the anime version that I really enjoy. One that really stands out for me is the showdown between Goku and Vegita for the first time in the Saiyajin saga. And I'm not talking about the edited dub version that unfortunately, is the only one currently available over here. At least that won't be for much longer though. ^_^ Anyway, the Japanese version is great to watch. Really exciting and intense. In fact, the whole part starting from Nappa and Vegita's arrival up to after Vegita is finally defeated was great in the original version to me. It's so much more emotional and dramatic.

I agree with pretty much everyone here. Manga fights > Anime fights.
Although there are the a few exceptions (such as the Gohan Vs Cell Kamehameha clash, as others have mentioned), with the manga, as others have stated, it portrays strength and speed better, as well as the fighters tactics in battle, something which can be easily ignored in the anime with its repeated frames and filler action which tends to break up the original feel of the fight that was in the manga. Also I find that fights in the anime can go either faster or slower than that was originally potrayed in the manga.
In fact, there are now few fights in DB or DBZ that I can watch in the anime where I don't get bored quickly, whereas I can read most, if not all fights in the manga again and again without getting tired of them.

I really wish whoever is directing Naruto wouldve directed DBZ. They managed to cover the Legendary Sannin fight in what , four episodes? In DBZ terms, that wouldve been at least ten episodes. The shortest fight in the series was 7 episodes and that was the Ginyu fight. The Freeza fight seemed to drag on forever in the anime. The Freeza vs Goku fight in the manga is what, only two or three volumes? It ended up being 20+ episodes long. For such a popular series, it had such a horrible director.

True. I remember reading Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation in the manga when Viz translated it, and thinking "was that it"? Compared to the anime, it was really quick and a bit "oh".
And didn't the Raditz fight last only 4 or so episodes?
And
Oh yes, idiot directors. I'm sure everyone would have been much happier with a 5 episode Freeza fight, and a 30 episode Garlic Jnr saga.Sun_Wukong wrote:IThe shortest fight in the series was 7 episodes and that was the Ginyu fight.
