While you’re right about it being a plot device, the Saiyans incredible memory is actually canon. After all Saiyan babies were sent off to wipe out planets for purchase, and when Raditz showed up on Earth he expected that Goku had "followed orders" and that he would know his Saiyan name. So yeah, as preposterous as it may be, Saiyans CAN remember just about everything from birth.
