"Zenkai"

Post by VegettoEX » Thu Aug 19, 2004 1:55 pm

Is the term "zenkai" used in the manga to describe the power-up Saiya-jin receive after facing and recovering from near death? I'm guessing no... but I've got questions to answer...

Here's a few translations I found of the word -

zenkai
ぜんかい last time / last installment / last session
whole assembly
complete destruction
complete recovery of health
opening fully / full throttle

So I guess in the manga, that's exactly what its referring to

No, no... I know what the word is and what it means. I'm asking if the manga SPECIFICALLY uses THAT word in this SPECIFIC case (being instances where Saiya-jin gain a power-boost from near-death).

Hmm in that case, I don't think so, but it could work most definitly if it did.

"Zenkai" is a very cool sounding word, but I don't think its there referring to that case. I'm curious though how this question came to be? Is it from that song "Something Zenkai Power" or whatever?

The full title of the song is "Dete Koi Tobikiri ZENKAI Power".
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

Wasn't that song written before the "near-death Saiyan power-up" idea was thought up?

Before... but it's just as Daimao translated it for the DVDs.

For precisely the reason that PsyLiam points out.

Looking at the first time the brink of death power up is mentioned (Vegeta/Dodoria fight), there's no zenkai anywhere.

Isn't the Zenkai left untranslated in the subtitles for the songs on the DVD? "Come out full force ZENKAI power"? Why'd you do that, Mr Steve?

If I remember correctly, it's because that's how it appears in the original Japanese version as well (ie, in all-caps Romaji). If that's how it was supposed to look in the original Japanese, who am I to deny their wishes in the English? Which is the same reason I left the Chinese "来,来,来, (lai lai lai)" in as well (but covering for it with the "come over here" line just before it). Just trying to preserve the flavor of the sone as much as possible.
