I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Apparently he's been holding out on us. Which is impossible because if he knew something he would have already spilled his guts about it. Which is why I hope he's joking because if he isn't...

Not that I didn't already know this, but it's nice to see confirmation that this movie isn't aimed at people like me. The people behind this movie aren't trying to make a movie for me and simply failing. They're looking for the kind of people who don't know much about Dragonball while walking into it.http://www.dbthemovie.com wrote:Is Roshi true to the manga character? “Yes, somewhat,” said director James Wong. “We kept his main features, like his humor. But in the manga Roshi is a true sexual pervert, which wouldn’t work in a family film. So we removed that part of the character.”
“I discovered that Dragonball had such a rich universe that it would take several films to cover all of its treasures. My goal with this movie is not to convince existing fans that Dragonball is great, they already know this, but to give a new audience. More adults, as I was a neophyte myself before discovering the manga!”
The kind of audience they want is the kind of person I was when walking into the live action Transformers: uninitiated and free to enjoy it for what it is.
The only thing that gets me is that they're doing a family film, but they're trying to get more adults to like Dragonball? Seems like a couple of goals that don't really go together too well in a society where the adults that watch family films are the adults that are there because they took their kids to see said film.
This is a good read. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Precisely. Despite popular belief, DragonBall fans are NOT the only people on the Earth who might see this movie. They've got to appeal to more people than just us. And I was the exact same way with Transformers. I didn't know any other names or "faces" besides Prime and Megatron, and I did just barely enough research before going into the film to get what was being referred to. But I really didn't need it; I would have done just fine and enjoyed the movie plenty being completely clueless.Kendamu wrote:Not that I didn't already know this, but it's nice to see confirmation that this movie isn't aimed at people like me. The term "family film" is really vague nowadays. The PG-13-rated Spider-Man 2 could be considered a family film, and that had sexual situations and scariness and violent murders all over the place. Even The Incredibles had a surprisingly high body count for any movie of its kind, and that had just a PG rating. I think a lot of the "disappointment" in this news about DragonBall is from people who were expecting it to be some dark, gritty, underworld death-fest like Sin City or something. The only thing that gets me is that they're doing a family film, but they're trying to get more adults to like Dragonball? Well, LotR's was 97% faithful to a one thousand plus word story. I can easily except a few changes (hair and story formating similar to the fourth animated film) but up and changing the aestic (spell?) feel just does not work for this one.SSj Kaboom wrote:This is a good read. To be fair Family film does not mean ruined. Take X-men. They changed costumes and altered things from comics but it worked. In the comics there was moments where Magneto ripped the metal out of wolverine (sick) never made it on screen
Spider-man is another example. The goblin throwing spider-man's Girlfriend off a bridge should have meant Death but they didn't they opted for a more family film
It worked, both of those = huge success and family films. Had the age rating gone up based on stuff like the death scene the companies involved wouldn't have made as much money
So master roshi isn't " a true sexual pervert" it doesn't say he can hit on the women at all it's just been toned down

Well, I tried reading that wall of text and lost focus before he even finished rambling about what had to be cut from the Lord of the Rings and skimmed the rest...SSj Kaboom wrote:This is a good read. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I'll just assume that the message somewhere in the wall of text was "you can't expect an adaptation to be perfect".
That's really starting to sound like a desperate fan's excuse to endure the horrible things they've heard about this movie.
Complain about missing Bombadil all you'd like, but Peter Jackson didn't decide to put Frodo in highschool and write out Sam entirely.
I'm contemplating whether or not I should post this information. They didn't tell me not to, but it was sent to me it's not public.SSJmole wrote:I'm in england. Why?JAPPO wrote:All I can say is if anyone is in London, you may want to keep an eye out...

The thing is, people who may have the same opinion as me about the movie as of now (pretty low, but not angry) know that other people are going to see this. But, people like myself have the opinion that Dragonball as it is could be adapted very faithfully (though condensed) and would do well. The changes that people like myself aren't liking are unnecessary because we think the general movie-going audience would enjoy Dragonball without the changes being made specifically for the general public.SSj Kaboom wrote:Precisely. There's a crowd looking for a "dark and gritty" Dragonball? I feel that such would be an even bigger change than what's going on now and would disappoint me even further! The darkest and grittiest stories in Dragonball that I can think of off the top of my head are DBZ Movie 2, DBZ Movie 3, the Bardock Special, and the Trunks Special. The term "family film" is really vague nowadays. The PG-13-rated Spider-Man 2 could be considered a family film, and that had sexual situations and scariness and violent murders all over the place. If those stories were being adapted to live action, I'd think that they should be a little darker than normal Dragonball. Overall, though, the poster of Goku in his orange dougi is the general attitude I'm looking at look-wise as to the feel of the movie. Lighthearted with some serious themes as the plot thickens and more serious troubles need to be resolved.
In the end, I'm feeling completely left out of the demographic for this movie and it doesn't really bother me. If it draws more intelligent people who want to learn about the source material to this forum, then great! But in the end this movie just looks like something that I should ignore and hope that the sequel is more faithful to the sources they pull from. Maybe a Saiyan Saga movie that is like the "Empire Strikes Back" of Dragonball (since almost everyone dies in that fight).
