Dragonball figures...with weapons

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Dragonball figures...with weapons

Post by Super Ghost Kamikaze » Sun Sep 28, 2008 1:28 am

I remember, a LOOOOOONG way back, I read a rant about a series of Dragonball figures being released in the US that came equipped with weapons like guns and bazookas. I'm sure I'd seen this series of figures in stores, and didn't buy them because they were, you know, stupid.

Well, now I want them.

The reasons make no sense. And I'm hoping these actually EXISTED, and that I'm not making up memories in my head here.

Evidence for their existence...hasn't popped up yet. I've actually done some searching, I haven't found anything relating to this series of figures. No online listings, nor can I even find the original rant. I think it was on DBZ Uncensored...

...

Seriously. I remember this. They must exist somewhere. Someone find them for me. >_>

I remember them too, they came out a while back in the early 2000's. I also remember seeing some of them in clearance in a wal-mart and k-mart a few years ago. I thought it was pretty ridiculous too that they came with weapons, but I suppose it's something additional that is better than nothing. I found this online listing for some of the rarer figures, but I REALLY hope these prices are a joke for these "rare" figures as it says:

Yeah, that makes no sense. Somebody doesn't know that these things were sold for probably $2.50-4.00.

...I was sure that they were Frieza arc, though. Hm.

Ugh, sorry to repost so fast, but I just remembered something! The rare "chase" variants for the figures were based off of the color of the bazooka or weapon the figure came with. So the black bazooka is still around $4-5 dollars for Trunks and Kuririn, but the red and gray bazookas are the ones that go for $40+. I don't think I would ever pay that much for something I could paint on like a weapon, but I guess if you are really into it...

Update: went to toyglobe and found the big list of many of the toys but they are kind of expensive though! It looks like the Frieza stuff is in there too, and a lot of toys I remember seeing at the time! I actually do kind of like the 2nd form Frieza with the tail accessory. :) I'm pretty sure you could find them cheaper if you did some digging.

I know how it is when you get a random urge to track down something, I did that with the early 90's X-men toys not too long ago!

For what it's worth, I also remember the advertisements for the figurines in question. I always thought it was really odd that they were given weapons, because they could go fly and shoot gigantic energy beams out of their hands. It's like giving Shadow the Hedgehog a gun--it's a pointless gimmick.

That said, arbitrarily giving popular cartoon characters weapons seems to be a popular marketing tactic. I'd say I don't know why, but it's fairly obvious--kids like violence! Doh.

Looking at that link, I really wish I'd bought that angel-winged Goku when I had the chance.

And some of those old school posters; man were the pre-Super-Saiyajin group posters cool. X3

I mean, look at this:

That's approaching Bebop-levels of cool.

Some are. Most of the Freeza arc had giant ki blasts instead of weapons. My local comic shop has the Krillin and Gohan ones, still. One has a tonfa and the other a grey bazooka, IIRC. Or a ki blast. Depends what 3rd Form Freeza had (I actually caved and went to buy Freeza, since he was cool enough, but someone actually bought him first :P).

I think the figures with weapons you're thinking of are Irwin rereleases of the Bandai Super Battle Collection, and AB Groupe Super Gueirrer Articule lines.

www.dragonballtoys.com

Look under Irwin - Reissues - 5" Line "The Saga Continues"
"What do you get when you cross an owl with a bungee cord? My Ass... ah ha ha ha."-Master Pain (Betty)

"Remember children, if you are walking on your way home and you see a downed power line, eat a lot of hot dogs very quickly." - Takeru Kobayashi on snl.

"AB Groupe Super Guerrier Articulé" is French for "Super Warrior Articulated AB Series," and I do live in Montreal, so I can see why you'd think that, but it's not at all the series I'm referring to.

EDIT: Here's the toys I was talking about, but they don't have the series my comic shop has (Namek saga Gohan, Krillin, 3rd Form Freeza). I think those were series 5. Looking at series 3 Krillin, I think the one at my comic shop has the same machine gun, not a tonfa. I'll have to check.

Freeza would've won against Goku if only he had a bazooka.

Super Saiyajin's have a critical weakness to badass weapons.

Especially when they're crudely designed and come with a lack of ammunition. But that's what ki blasts are for.

Clearly bazookas are to ki attacks what SSJ is to hair. :P

I know it's French and what it means. :D

From what you mentioned it sounds like you're talking about the Irwin Delux figures?

I have all five
Gohan (Namek saga)
Krillin (Android saga)
SSJ Trunks in CC Jacket
Freeza form 3
Cell form 1

Gohan, Trunks, and Cell come with yellow energy balls, Freezas is red and Krillins is blue.

Woop! Looks I was mixing two different series. That's the Freeza I was talking about, but not the Gohan or Krillin.

Thank you.

I've been looking through the Editorial and Opinions sections of the old DBZ Uncensored for days! How'd you find that? WHY did you find that? That's...thank you. It feels good to read that again. For some reason, this particular essay/opinion/editorial stuck out in my mind when I thought of things that reminded me of the butchering of Dragon Ball.

And yes, it's the Frieza with the machine gun that I am particularly looking for. I can't seem to find it. For some reason, the gun-toting Frieza doesn't seem to exist. Did they replace the gun-toting Frieza with the tail and energy ball Frieza I see with that set?

I saw this at Z-Store/whatever-the-hell-it's-called-now a few years back for less than $5. Seriously, gray bazooka and everything - the thing is, I didn't care about the weapon, I just wanted the spiffy red Dragon Ball.

Try being a collector of a more widespread figure line, like Marvel or Star Wars, or in my case, TMNT. I often see figures you can still get in stores marked as "RARE!" and their price jacked up sixfold. Also, there are some older figures, that are still relatively common, that go for hundreds of dollars.

Speaking of TMNT....
