VIZBIG Question

Post by Gozar » Fri Oct 03, 2008 1:06 pm

Hey, sorry if this has been answered 20,000 times...But what's the deal with the colored pages in the VIZBIG editions?

Are they the official colored ones that Toriyama did or did Viz do it themselves? Or could it be a little of both? I want to decide if I'm going to buy some.

All the colored pages and chapters in the VizBig are those that were originally colored by Toriyama for the chapters' original runs in Weekly Shonen Jump. They were printed in greyscale for the Japanese and English "tankobon" volumes, then retained for the Japanese "kanzenban" volumes and the English VizBigs.

The problem with the VizBigs is that, unlike the kanzenban, they don't keep ALL the color. Some parts are kept in the ugly greyscale, and sometimes look kinda bad because of it.

But overall it's still the best-quality and nicest-looking version of the English manga you're gonna get at this point. So if you want to read it in English, the VizBigs are probably your best bet.

Agreed. They're cheaper, too.

Aren't they releasing like one huge book for Dragon Ball and then a two-parter for Dragon Ball Z sometime in the near future? I'd rather wait for that. Looks like they might scrap the VizBig editions.

Fitting 16 volumes worth of material into a single book? People are already expressing difficulty with holding and reading something as big as the VizBigs, which are only barely three original volumes' worth each. Doing what you said is impossible.

I think you're thinking of the box sets, which are just the original volumes for each entire series all in one package.

In fact, I think the only problem with the VIZBIG editions is the fact that they are censored a little bit.

It seems they're only stingy about color with DB/DBZ. The Kenshin ones have all the color aside from the first vol having 2 grayscale pages, and they fixed some of the typos from the smaller books.

Herms did a very nice color chapter guide that documents what color pages can be found in what books (Kanzneban, VIZ BIG, WJ). He even gives some ideas for what color chapters will be included in what future VIZ BIG issues.

So for the ones who already have VIZBIG 2 of DB, how is it? original covers anywhere? or just the 4th one like VIZBIG 1?

How many chapters with color pages?

I'm not completely sure what you're asking, but I do have the second VizBig of the "DB"(non "Z" line) from Viz right here. So if you could clarify, I can probably answer.

I think that's what he means.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Well, sorry if I couldnt explain what I meant :P

I want to know if the volume 2 of the DB VIZBIG line has the original covers of tankoubon 4 - 6 or just the fourth one, I'm asking this because the first one just had the first tankoubon cover.

And I want to know how many chapters have color pages, or how many chapters that originally had color pages are gray-scaled. If I'm not mistaken, in VIZBIG 2, aroung 90 pages should have color in them...

Hope its all right now

I have the VizBigs, and they're cool and the color pages are great, but it's really annoying when you see the pages that SHOULD be in color as grayscale, it looks lazy.

but overall I think its a good re-release. Nice paper, big pages, and some color pages. great value too.
