Question about Dragonball Z: Buyuu Retsuden on Megadrive

Post by DragoonClawNZ » Sun Oct 05, 2008 5:41 pm

Hi I have a question about this Dragonball Z game. I'm planning to get Dragonball Z: Buyuu Retsuden on Megadrive through Ebay and I was wondering whether it's got region locking on it.

I have a few japanese titles on Megadrive and they play perfectly (The JP cartridge shell was replaced with an ordinary US/EU shell) on my ordinary NZ Megadrive but if anyone else has one here, would they know if it is?

Here is the game I'm talking about:

As far as I know, the only "region-locking" on the game is the fact that Mega Drive games don't fit into my Genesis without first putting them into the Game Genie :).

Doing that, though, it works perfectly fine...

Yeah, I've seen converters that are like that on Trademe (New Zealand auction site), I've still yet to find one. Thanks for the information VegettoEX.

If you want an easy way to test, try loading the game up in an emulator hard-locked to a specific region. I can try this test for you if you want; alternatively, I can open up the ROM in a hex editor and take a look at the ROM header to see if it's locked to a specific region. Let me know. ;)

Right! I forgot about that! I could do it but I don't have an emulator anymore because I don't use it. I rarely use Megadrive/Genesis emulators because I have original copies of games, mostly ultra rare copies. Yes, that would be great because this is one of my favourite Dragonball Z games and the soundtrack is simply amazing.

I wish I'd thought of the Game Geny thing before my dad took a saw to my Genesis. :(
Plays just fine, though.
(However... I don't remember what region settings I was using when I tried this game on an emulator... but it ran at a different speed compared to everything else. Maybe the rom was a pal version... *meh*. No such problem exists when I play the cartrige in the Genesis, though; it's just annoying as fish to get the meteo moves to work with the Genesis controller... ).

The JP version seems to work on a Genesis (tested with an emulator). The European version works too.

But the JP version doesn't seem to work on a PAL Megadrive.

It's annoying with a Saturn controller too :P
The controls are not that good in this game.

Maybe it's because they're both NTSC and that is a shame. Oh well, I can always find a converter that allows you to play Japanese Mega Drive games on a European/New Zealand Mega Drive, I've seen them before.

PAL versions exist. When I was in Spain a friend scored one from France.

I knew about that but I thought those were MEGA rare, so I aimed to get the Japanese one. Here in New Zealand, the Japanese one is considered a gem.

You have to be careful about the adpater you're purchasing, I think many of them don't work with DBZ and are used only to solve the problem of the shape of the cartridge.

Here in France, the game (with the box and instruction booklet of course) costs usually around 20$ on ebay, sometimes less if you're lucky. Same for the japanese version by the way.

Is it more expensive in NZ ?

Pointless side note: In the booklet for season 6, they have various pictures of Gohan as a Super Saiyan. One of them is from the Buyuu Retsuden cover art.

Ones I've seen are basically a cartridge that the shape is similar to an ordinary cartridge but it has an plug-in on the top for japanese cartridges. I think it's suppose to be a region converter also, I'm not sure. It's been like 4 months since I've last seen one.

Well basically, something that is around $30 in the United States is around $47 in New Zealand. Our currency isn't as strong as the United States. Like $1 USD is $1.57183 NZD, I found that out at this site:

Right, yes! I almost forgot about that, someone I know that also lives in New Zealand has the game also and he told me about it. But he's unable to play it too because he hasn't got a converter.

I could have purchased a French game on ebay and send it to you, but I don't think it's worth it since the shipping will certainly be around 10$ :?

Really? Well if it's worth the price then it would be worth it. But not at the moment, when the time is right, I'll email you.
