Seems a little strange that someone Toriyama at least partially intended to be a next villain wouldn't actually have some kind of clever name. At least Cell's name actually describes what he is! It may be literal, but it's better than nothing...
It's also possible he's named after a pun on the word "gyro." Not the pita sandwhich so much as the autogyro or gyroscope, both of which are mechanical objects and work with how he's a mechanical supergenius.

I doubt that. The "gyro" in both of those words is pronounced ジャイロ (jairo) in Japanese, which doesn't really sound close to "Gero," at least to me.

Even if it were ジェロ (jero), which is how it's said in the FUNimation dub (FYI, Dayspring, it's pronounced Geh-Roh in Japanese), it still wouldn't look close enough to the original word. ジェイロ (jeiro) or something, maybe.
