For Frances sake I too hope that these have good quality, but based on what they got for the movies I really, really doubt it.

Here is a bunch of Dragonbox and French release screenshot comparisons: http://db.schuby.org/daizex/viewtopic.p ... 220#119220 (just scroll down a bit)

And here is a French release and Funi standard DVD double feature screenshot comparison: http://db.schuby.org/daizex/viewtopic.p ... 743#178743

Here's some news from the remastering process of the 117 episodes for Box 1 of DBZ.
Hey all.
We've already "treated" 48 episodes completely.
It's going very well, because the french dub on the 16 mm sources is very, very little censored. The censored parts are very rare and short, and the work's going faster than anticipated! But please note, this is based on the first 48 episodes, we don't know for the rest, since the 16 mm source from S.O.F.I always have positive or negative surprises. The team's gonna start/attac the fird lot of 24 episodes. We're in the middle of authoring the dvds and making menus which are very nice and go well with the episodes in question. A team of fans will take care of the subs. When it comes to authoring and encoding it'll also be left for real fans who have proven their capabilities before. I can't tell you more right now since this project is very complex, to realize. But I think that it'll be very likely to have a release before or around summer 2009, but the distribution vagaries make it impossible to give more precise dates.
At the moment we're at the design part of the product, and that takes a lot of constant work, like you can imagine....

@très vite, cordialement, Florent.

Very little censored? So, these are almost not-uncut? *is confused*
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
If you say "almost uncut" you have it. The sources vary from episode to episode.

Why censor anything?
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Wow, I think that France might very well be getting worse releases of the series and the movies than us; both in footage quality and in content.

Has France had any other releases of these episodes? If this is all they've ever gotten then I'm sure that the buyers are pretty happy with just having these episodes. If they've had some high quality releases to compare these to than I'd expect some negative reactions to this boxset and AB looking into buying better masters.

It all boils down to "what are the reactions of the French buyers to this release"?

Tons of cut french-dub releases.
The reactions are very good, as it's the first time AB's tried to do something positive about the Dragonball license (well, it started with the movie boxes).
Who knows, the remastering might look good in the end, and to me, it's not so annoying to have the japanese version with subs where the dub is cut because I know they'll never redub anything. Heck, I hope they paste in japanese screams where possible. This got frequently done in the french dub anyway.

Dragonball, and DBZ have a very particular status.

First, it's a "nostalgic" series, because it first aired 20 years ago in France. People who liked to watch it then, but are not really "fans", may think that since it's "old", the quality doesn't matter, and the actual boxes are enough.
In the same time, these people don't give a damn about the Japanese version.

Then, you have to know that DB and DBZ are still airing. 2 or 3 TV Networks always broadcast either DB, DBZ or DBGT. Heck, this morning I've seen Coolas' return and an episode of Dragonball !
It means that, for some people, DBZ is no different than Naruto or Bleach, even if they know it's older. They may buy these boxes, but why would they since they can watch the show for free ?

My opinion is that DBZ fans will buy this release if the quality is good, but since I don't think it's gonna be cheap, non-fans will prefer the old release, without the sub.

And you have the fans like me, that are nostalgic about the french dub voices, want the dub uncut, and love the ultimate "insert-japanese-scream-scenes" ^^

So, was the dub originally produced uncut? I'm a little confused now.

Yeah, but most americans, (including Mike?) seem to not care about this.
I already e-mailed him to point out about this topic.

Now, with the TV series, even if we've had the 16 mm film masters with the original version
(which isn't the case, after 15 yeras) it would have been impossible to send it all
to get it "telecinemated"... (have no idea what english word would be)
Télécinéma is probably the French word for “telecine,” which is the process of transferring a film source (cinema) to another video format (usually television).

I think this is probably one of the coolest pieces of news regarding this project. It takes a trusting company to put important jobs like these in the hands of fans. Unless they just mean people who were already employed with them, and happen to be fans of the series… ?

I'm tired of repeating myself. Go read the earlier replies in this topic, and the other topic I made about DBZ situation in France.
