Ki

Post by Milton » Mon Aug 30, 2004 10:02 pm

I thought about this earlier today. Throughout the show, characters use ki. It's always been my understanding that when an energy attack is used, the attack is basically ki energy being expelled. If that isn't the case, then I guess this topic is closed.

But if it is the case, then my question is, how could ki, something I've come to understand over time as a "life-force", possibly be used to destroy? Think about it...something that sustains life is also capable of vaporizing it. Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't ki energize someone (Androids not included)?

Well, heat sustains life, if used in a controlled fashion. Doesn't mean that getting hit by a fireball wouldn't hurt.

Anything that can give life can also take it away.

I suppose that it could be heat, but you'd think that it would burn a lot more than the person you're aiming for.

The S: This is true too. Guess maybe I think too much. :?

But aren't they molding it into something concussive, or "anti-goodfeeling" in general? That's supposed to be the whole reason why only those skilled in the martial arts can manipulate their ki.

It always struck me as a concussive blast, if anything. Like a giant water-canon (and wouldn't water have been a much better example than fire? Yes, it would).

I think you guys are thinking too much into it. I always just thought that Ki/Chi was your inner energy and you could harness it for whatever purpose.

That's what we're saying. :?

However, Milton is right in saying that chi is LIFE energy, which is why he asked how it could be possible to mold it into something anti-life.

Another possible explination I thought of was that there's a positive and negative form of Ki. Like the Force, what kind of person you are determines your Ki. Because of that, you are prone to damage from the opposite of your Ki.

Like, for example, Buu was made from (or at least reenergized with) an enormous amount of hate, which would fill him with negative Ki. Because of this, it took a gi-normous genki dama (paired with the Kamehameha) to finally do him in.

Except that during the Saiyan saga, Vegeta (really quite nasty) used ki-attacks on both Nappa (also quite nasty) and Goku (really quite good).

True, but considering the fact that Vegeta hadn't fought at all and Nappa had his ass handed to him a few moments before then, it would sort of make sense that Vegeta could do that.

Liam's right. How would you therefore explain all battles between friends, like at the budoukais?

I think it depends on what kind of feeling you have behind it... Like Vegeta intended on killing Nappa, and that's what happened.

Come on, it's so obvious Dayspring... One is a swirly ball that stays in the hand and destroys stuff, the other is a fireball that launches itself out of the hand. I mean, anybody can see the similarity there. :P

Anyone else notice that the Hadoken and the Kamehameha are the exact same move just with a different name?

It's like this. You can use ki to live, and you can manipulate it any way you want. The characters used it to hurl energy balls at each other, but Son Goku manipulated his ki to give to Freeza. That right there, Son Goku, who is a good character, giving life-sustaining ki to Freeza, a villain, just disproves the good and bad ki theory. It's more of what B-Kun said, about what your intentions are. Whatever they manipulate it for is what happens.
Maybe the Hadoken and Kamehameha stance really is some ancient ki manipulation stance.

Possibly it is. But Toriyama says that he came up with the Kamehameha stance by doing different poses in the mirror and seeing what looked the best.

Yes. Everyone has.

Yeah, figured as much. The Spirit Wave comes pretty damn close too, IIRC.

As for the topic, which I forgot about in my first post, I just see Ki as general energy. It depends on how you manipulate it on what it does. Like the water example from before.
