Live Action Movie Manga

Post by AndrewBlyth » Tue Oct 14, 2008 5:16 am

Hi everyone, as we all know with the release of the 20th Centaury Fox Live Action movie there will be a huge amount of merchandise, just like all Hollywood blockbusters.

Among the merchandise to come is a rumoured comic/manga series, personally to me it is slightly confusing. Why make a manga of a movie based on a manga, but nevertheless i was just wondering. If this was to happen? What would "you" the Dragonball community think of it, and furthermore what would you like it to be?

Obviously, most people already hate the live action movie. I personal am very excited for it. It isnt gonna be 100% true to DB but it is a major DB revival worldwide. I'm hoping good thing come from this movie (well, its effect). As for a manga based off the movie, I say they should go for it. I would get it. If people are interested in the movie/manga, maybe they will reliaze it was based off of the original DB, check it out, and become a fan. The more popular it gets, the more effort companys will put into DB related stuff.

This is at least how I see it from my non movie hating prespective.

That didn't stop them from making a tie-in comic for the X-Men (also a FOX franchise)
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

I really wouldn't be interested, I'm yet to see a movie tie-in comic with convincing enough artwork to warrant a purchase.

And don't get me started on everything I think FOX have done wrong thus far with this movie.

The only positive thing that could possibly come out of this movie is to get people to actually read (or watch) the original source material.

Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game?

Would I read a comic based on the movie? Probably not... Seems a tad redundant to me, but, I mean, if that's something that appeals to someone else, than, good for them. No one really had/has an interest for the Animanga that's been released in Japan... This is sorta the same thing, though a bit of a stretch.

And, on a side note, I think we're a little over-protective of the franchise as a whole. Just because something crappy comes out, doesn't change the fact that what we already have is amazing. And, like some people have mentioned, this might actually bring some new blood to the fandom. I was really big into the MegaMan.EXE series a while back, and despite it's... not-very-goodness, it opened up the classic Mega Man series to me, which has become one of my favorite video game franchises of all time (I did a little dance when Mega Man 9 was announced... Which was kinda sad and disturbing, but, I digress). I'm 17 now, so I would've been 12 or 13 when I sat down a first played the original Mega Man games, something I never would have done had a new, more culturally relevant entry not been made into the series. I know the new movie may not be all that great, but if it and it's related merchandise gives someone the chance to fall in love with the series that means so much to me, in any context, then, whatever. I'm all for it.

And... Wow... I totally didn't mean to ramble on about that. Sorry, guys.

Yeah i guess that if the movie is decent, more mainstream audience will notice Dragonball, leading on to a whole new generation of Dragonball fans, however if there are more and more sequels the fandom might be totally divided by "classic Dragonball fans" and "western Dragonball fans", especially if they start making games, toys or even tv shows based on the movies. I would also agree that FOX and Hollywood milk their movies a bit too much.

It would be milked but DB would still be alive mainstream. DB populartiy = more DB = Viz taking the initiavtive and producing english Daizenshuus = awesomeness.... but hey, thats my views, some people hate that thinking.

Its not going to be 30% true to DRagonball. 20% is just wishful thinking.

Big franchise-inspired movies get things like tie-in comic books and games and such. DragonBall's no different. With the slew of DragonBall games constantly coming out ever year, I'm expecting a movie game. If it's any good and for a system I own, I'll make sure to play it. Same with a comic book or novel; I've seen and read or own various official comic adaptations and novelizations of other movies. I'll certainly check out ones for DragonBall if they happen.

I think all the modern Marvel movies had comic tie-ins. I've seen comics based on the Daredevil movie and the first Hulk movie, at least.

When FOX made Aliens vs Predator (a story based off of a comic book series) they released jr. novelizations and comics based on the movie that was based on the comics. Since FOX is also behind Dragonball, I'm really expecting them to release video game and comic book adaptations along with the novelization they have already released.

I don't think (well I like to think) that a comic based on the adaptation based on the series won't come out unless the movie is actually very successful.

Either way I won't be buying it; I'll simply shake my head in dismay when I pass it in the bookstore.

...

I'd actually be interested in it, just for the novelty....if it was actually drawn and not made from movie frames with speech bubbles tossed onto them.

What if Mr. Toriyama did a manga based off the Dragonball live action movie which is based off the manga he wrote? Would that be kinda pointless?
