Viz/Gollancz translations (Shonen Jump Graphic Novel no. 16)

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Viz/Gollancz translations (Shonen Jump Graphic Novel no. 16)

Post by wannywan » Fri Oct 17, 2008 6:43 pm

OK. On the back cover illustration of this edition, there's a full colour picture of Piccolo towering over Goku after he has become gigantic.

The speech bubble to the right of the illustration reads: "Gya ha ha! Don't you think you should ask your friends for help?"

The speech bubble to the left of the illustration reads: "At this point, you have no hope of winning!"

Now, inside the graphic novel itself, the same scene is depicted in grayscale but the translation is slightly different.

The speech bubble to the right of the illustration reads: "Gahahaha!! Do you truly wish to decline your allies' aid?!"

The speech bubble to the left of the illustration reads: "Without it, your slim hope becomes none at all!!"

I am just curious as it seems with the Gollancz manga, there is a different translation to the Viz one. Are there any other differences between the two?

About two thirds of my 42 volume collection is Viz but a big percentage of vol. 1-16 is Gollancz and I'm wondering if, like I said, there are any more differences?

That's a truly awesome find.

Probably making it easier on the eye, if Biblical/Shakespearean talk was on the back it would deter from anyone considering buying, if they're a moron or something... What kid of person getting into a series would buy a manga volume that far in anyway...?

Well, my first two volumes of the DBZ manga were no. 12 and no. 18 so....

Yeah, the language on he inside does sound very Shakespearean.

 I get that, my first manga purchases were Chobits 2 and some later volume of Battle Royale, just because they were the first manga volumes I'd ever seen...

Shakespearean?

It's not like it reads "Gahahaha!! Dost thou truly wish to decline the aid of thine allies?" ;p
