Dragon Ball Z: Cooler Double Feature Discussion

Post by DB_Fan1991 » Mon Nov 03, 2008 6:06 pm

Some people are probably getting this early, so we should discuss this I have questions myself

1. Is Cha-La-Head-Cha-La kept as the opening for either movie
2. Is Tobikiri No Saikyou Vs Saikyou kept as Movie 5's ending
3. Is HERO (Kimi Ga Hero) Kept as Movie 6's ending
4. Does Cooler's Revenge still have it's Spanish track
5. Are there any characters redubbed
6. Are there any missing BGM pieces

Mind you, I do not yet own this release. But based on past Double Feature releases, I think that I can answer at least some of your questions with relative certainty . . . and if nothing else, it'll be "fun" to see how I score.

1. Anybody's guess. This has been a hit-and-miss affair.

2. Guaranteed.

3. Guaranteed.

4. 50/50. FUNimation omitted the UUSE's inclusion of Spanish audio for the Season Sets (to the chagrin of many), yet they retained the commentary from the Dead Zone release in the corresponding Double Feature release as an "extra". So while I'm leaning toward "no", at the same time I do see precedent for a "yes".

5. I wouldn't count on it.

6. I wouldn't count on it.

Man, I hope so. Most likely, they will be, given the previous double feature, but it's not written in stone yet.
2. Is Tobikiri No Saikyou Vs Saikyou kept as Movie 5's ending
3. Is HERO (Kimi Ga Hero) Kept as Movie 6's ending
These are pretty much confirmed. 99.9%.
4. Does Cooler's Revenge still have it's Spanish track
Most likely not.
5. Are there any characters redubbed
We might get, like, one line per movie tinkered with just to justify FUNi's "revised dialogue" gimmick. I don't think any significant changes will be made, though.
6. Are there any missing BGM pieces
To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised. Movies 2-4 all had certain pieces removed for no reason at all.

1.) A 30-second piece of music from movie 2. (right before "Piccolo-san Dai~suke")
2.) A 20-second piece of music from movie 3. (when Haiya Dragon sneaks up on Chi-Chi)
3.) Gohan's original whistling is replaced with his dub whistling in movie 4's climax. (though the original whistling remains in both the beginning of the film and in the flashback later on)

So yeah, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Could you possibly take a screenshot of this framefrom the opening? I'm trying to get a shot of it from all of the FUNi Dragonball remastered DVDs so that I can see how the remastering process has changed as the season sets and double features progress. This shot if from season 6 by the way.

I guess I'll go ahead and throw my questions out there for whoever gets it first.

1.) Is "Head-Cha-La" kept in the English-with-Japanese-music track?

2.) Are both ending songs kept?

3.) Notice any redubbings?

4.) Is the Japanese teaser trailer for movie 7 still included with movie 6 like it was on the previous DVD?

5.) Does the third "Head-Cha-La" animation take over as the opening for movie 6?

6.) In movie 6, did FUNimation do what they did with movie 2 and create a textless end credits sequence by assembling the proper clips from the film and putting their credits over them?

7.) According to the trailer, what's the next double feature going to include? There's been speculation that the movies will be presented out of order so that the Broli films can be together.

Ok, guys. I got the Double Feature in a couple days ago. Here's the dilly-o:

1) Head-Cha-La is missing from Movie 5's dub, but intact in Movie 6's dub. I have no idea why it would be missing from one movie, but kept in the other. Perhaps it's some sort of rights issue, or perhaps lazy QC on Funi's part.

2) Both Japanese ending songs are intact.

3) All Japanese BGM is intact.

4) Credits/titles are still in English-only (not a big deal unless you have to have the original title cards.)

5) Remastering is on par with the other Double Features.

6) There's one dub line changed: in Movie 5, when Gohan and Haiya Dragon fly away from Karin Tower, Karin's line was changed from "By the way, what's a bean-daddy?" to "That Gohan's a good kid, Goku's lucky to have him." or something along those lines. The strange part is that it sounds nothing like Chris Sabat's Karin voice, but like a totally different person. but Yajirobe's line "Uh... I dunno, but speaking of beans, let's make some chili." is still kept in. Very bizarre.

7) The "easter-egg" trailer for Movie 7 is absent from this version of Movie 6.

8 ) Movie 6 does have the appropriate Head-Cha-La animation.

9) Oddly enough, there's no trailer for the next Double Feature on this set.

10) Movie 6's ending sequence is the textless version with FUNi's credits, so it's not squished to the corner of the screen like Movies 3 & 4 were. I included shots of the credits in my screencaps below.

And for the big treat: comparision screenshots. I didn't have the original FUNi singles with me when I took these shots, so if anyone feels like comparing these screencaps to the original singles, feel free. Also, I capped the end credits since some people were interested in them.

Movie 5:

Movie 6:

All-in-all, it's another solid release. Movie 5's weird dub line and missing Head-Cha-La are the only real WTF moments so far. But overall, I encourage the purchase.

These were mastered in 1080p, correct? Did you downsize them or is 800×450 the size at which they natively appear?

This is from the DVD version, so it's not 1080p. These shots are taken at the full resolution the DVDs allow.

Wow, I think the FUNi one is actually the better-looking of the two.

So out of curiosity, what about movie 5's Spanish language track?

Thank you very much, originalbilis. It's very appreciated.

Well, looks like I'm keeping my original movie 6 DVD for the movie 7 teaser trailer.

Glad to see both movies' ending credit sequences are replicated properly. That little bit of redubbing is kind of wierd, but I suppose the conversation still makes sense... sorta. It just kinda gives the impression that Yajirobe isn't really paying attention.

So yeah, the only real WTF moment here is the proper opening song missing from movie 5. Man, I thought FUNi was aiming for consistancy with these sets, but they are ultimately failing here. What's the deal? I have a theory that they're removing one piece of music per movie to coax us into buying a future "fixed" release, but that theory's still work-in progress.

And my goodness, those caps look sexy. I cannot wait to own this. If I remember correctly, movie 6's script was pretty spot-on, so with all of the proper music and songs finally inserted, that movie is probably FUNi's most faithful dub so far.

Thanks again.

You're quite welcome.

And I agree, Movie 6 (along with Movie 8 in my opinion) were more accurate in terms of script compared to the other FUNi movie dubs, so this film comes off as a bit more professional as a result. It doesn't hurt either that Cooler's dub voice is actually rather fitting compared to Linda Young's Freeza.

What I find interesting about the FUNimation version (aside from the plastic-looking colors) is that the shot is actually aligned slightly downward and to the right of the D.Box version. You can actually see a smidgen more of Goku’s chin and ear and a smidgen less of his forehead and shoulder.
