Anyone else dissapointed in Infinite World?

Post by Gozar » Fri Nov 07, 2008 12:26 am

I picked up IW earlier today at a nearby GameStop. Popped it in but so far am pretty disappointed. The game play is nice, a touched up Budokai 3 engine (I have not played either Shin Budokai as I do not have a PSP). So game play was good, I'm still getting used to the game play again but still good.

My problem arises with some other areas. First off story mode is really lacking. There's hardly any fights at all. I'm only up to SSJ Goku Vs.Freeza but there has yet to be anyone but Goku fight. The catch Bubbles mission was fun and that's been about the highlight of my playing. In addition this also causes a lack of cut scenes which I happen to enjoy.

Also as far as the English Dub track goes. I was sad to see that as far as Intro's, victory dialogue, losing dialogue, fight sounds, etc. Are all the same as Budokai 3, so they weren't re-done. Finally, the performances of the FUNi Cast in the cut scenes and all other new stuff is insanely below average. I was especially disappointed with Sean Schemmel. Coming off that stellar Burst Limit performance this game gives me stuff that almost makes Season 3 sound good

Did FUNi and/or Atari simply not care about this game given that it was for the PS2 and possibly not as marketable as Burst Limit?

Later on in the game you'll get new dragon missions where you play as the other characters instead of just Goku.

Also I'm really wanting to play this game for the new gameplay updates. A lot of players I know seem to be enjoying it, they also said they dislike how some cancel combos aren't as good anymore but I'm not really an expert that wants to play like that, or at least perfectly. >_>

I'm also looking forward to fighting as Baby, GT Kid Goku and such, should be cool.

Yeah, so the first thing you do in story mode is catch these big blue thingys. THat's just so weird! What is this? Waverace 64?!

Seriously...you were offended by check marks? This is why I have issues taking people seriously.

The thing about Infinite World is that it basically REQUIRES you to play for a lengthy amount of time to appreciate it.
  • You have to drudge through the "enhanced" difficulty for a period of time to gather the Zeni to purchase the skills which increase your life and make the game actually playable. "Very Easy" equates to "Normal" from Budokai 3.
The gameplay additions (especially if you never played Shin Budokai) take quite a while to adapt to. You'll find yourself forgetting to use R1, the new "Royal Guard" technique, and the questionable Aura Burn.
The mini-games are confusing at first, but mastering them comes quickly.
You start with 8 characters. You have to purchase the characters after you encounter them or complete their part of the game.
You start with 4 levels. The same purchasing requirement from above applies.
The cutscenes are sparse and the storyline has absolutely no driving motivation. But honestly, this is the ba-jillionth DragonBall Z game and if you don't know the story BY NOW, you probably aren't interested in this game anyways.
Whats the music like?
It's amazing. The new stuff (there's rehashed tracks from the first 3 games here and there) feels VERY Budokai-esque. I'm definitely awaiting the soundtrack for this.

I really like the game, despite how amazingly lazy it feels. While a story mode more-or-less like Budokai 1 or 3 would have been superior, the new gameplay additions more than make up for what's missing in the production value department.

I knew something was up. I was thinking that there's no way I've gotten this rusty that I have to play on Very Easy or Easy most of the time.

Y'know, I was wondering how to do the super invincible guard. It's different than in Burst Limit, isn't it?

And I agree that the difficulty is a bit of a bitch.

I'm up to Freeza. Been going on Normal so far... The mini games are kinda pointless, but kinda fun in a way. I guess it's good they put in something new for variety sake.

The cut-scenes look good, exept that they're way too short, and we only see like three 20-30 second cutscenes per saga. That will make anyone new to Dragon Ball go "wtf why is Goku trying to catch a moneky? He can defeat an alien, but he can't catch a monkey?" Oh right... The banana peals...

I like the music though. The song in the capsule shop is addicting as hell.

I'm disapointed with the really weak attempt Atari did at matching the mouth flaps to the dialogue. It's terribe  Otherwise, I have no real issue with this game. I knew what I was getting when I got it for only $30, especially when the cover says "The Best Of The Budokai Series", when the game isn't a Budokai game.

Some 30 minute observations.

Good
- Good old fashioned Budokai gameplay.
- Some Dragon Missions are nice.
- Yellow suit Yamucha!!

Bad
- The game is bloody hard. I suck at fighting games so I may be done pretty soon as far as moving on goes.
- I hate checkpoints in Dragon Missions, also the camera in Dragon Missions is atrocious.
- No long haired Yamucha!?

Nitpicks
- No voice overs on the menu? I know it's a budget game but they had the cash to get everyone in to read their lines again.
- Babidi and Dabura running a capsule store is just weird.
- Default Yamucha has no ultimate? Screw that.
Yamucha Densetsu - APRIL 8th Update - Goku is Yamucha and Yamucha is Goku
Further evidence to support the Yamucha-Goten lineage! Features badly Photoshopped images from Google search

Hey,

I just chatted with someone, who has bought the game.

Can anyone confirm that the DVD is just filled with about 2,3 GB of data?
I mean, that would explain quite a lot of the "bad quality" we see here...

And then again, if it is true, that very same fact makes it seem even more stupid to cut out characters and not introducing new stages :/

Didn't Budokai 3 have like, 4GB? That really says something.

Not sure about Budokai 3, but I think it was around 3GB.

Budokai 3 also had lots of audio. The Dragon Universe had tons of audio, so I think that might have contributed quite a bit.

God, i miss Dragon Universe...easily the best story mode out of any DBZ game IMO.

Hell no. If I wanted to play DBZ Monopoly, I'd take Monopoly and use mini DBZ figures. :x

Also, meant to ask this. But Japanese voices, they in?

Budokai 2's would've been better if you didn't have to replay the whole thing over every single time.
