While you believe the dub to be total trash, I will be honest with you and say that if it were not for the Funimation story I would not be a fan today and I doubt I would pass it on to my children if I have some in the future. When I look back, it is Funimation’s version that made me a fan of the series. Now that I have most of the season box sets, so that I would be familiar with the original version for discussion purposes and just for the sake of knowing. However, it is Funimation’s story that will have a special place with me because of all of the fond memories that is attached to it.

O_O it took me until this post to remember a few details of my view of how ki works...mAcChaos wrote:Well, Vegito was able to control his own body and force Buu to where he wanted him to go when Buu went inside him... so I suppose he can do that when he's in space too. Basically keep the air in a bubble around him and prevent his body from expanding or anything. Although it still wouldn't last long.
Actually, this is the perfect example (at least, that I can think of right now...
<So I'm apparently going on a ki-usage tangent for the bulk of this post....>
The human body really does have a crap ton of potential (I recall hearing something not too long ago on one of those "Graa extreme~! documentary!" channels about what the body could do if it was using all of its resources together at once; sounded an aweful lot like Kaioken, with potential self-damage and all). I kinda like that Toriyama acknowledged that ki is _supposed_ to be invisible, because visible "balls of light" are confusing as heck to physics out without changing what the phrase means...
But yeah. I tend to think of stigmata(SP?) and yoga style "How exactly do you get your body to do that?!" techniques to help explain how it might in theory be possible to use things like body heat, metabolism, or heck, just freaky-as-hell flesh motions to achieve something resembling DB-style ki effects (though clearly, blowing up the moon is a bit beyond making candles dance).
One of the key things, though, is making all of that energy actually usable. Bleh, I've noticed lately that if I wind up having to say a good deal that I don't feel prepared for, after the whole nerve thing calms down, there's this huge increase in heat all around my chest. There's a fairely simple explanation for that sort of thing; but consider if someone was badass enough at manipulating their body to get something like that to happen, say, in the hand? (I could throw in a few more useless anecdotes, but there's no point, really).
So yeah, MAkChaos's post reminded me of that, so I'm starting to lean toward the "Mastering ki involves mastering lungs" idea. Actually, that seems simple enough (Well, once we get past my ranting) that I could see that being an almost official excuse...
... Then there's Bardock. XD. Now, why would one shout in a place where sound doesn't carry?
(T_T and now for some reason I'm imagining the torment of trying to breathe while stuck out in space.)

Nostalgia/preference is totally cool. I still have fond memories of the old Pilaf, Saiyan, and 1st 1/2 of Freeza Saga dubs.Saiyan-Professor wrote:While you believe the dub to be total trash, I will be honest with you and say that if it were not for the Funimation story I would not be a fan today and I doubt I would pass it on to my children if I have some in the future. Just be aware that the FUNimation story has serious issues with internal consistency. One quick example- we've been talking a lot lately about the Saiyan's and their behavior. The original story presents a fairly stable, gradually changing Vegeta. The dub "tempers" the increased honorable and misunderstood Vegeta by upping the asshole factor. In some cases, even overwriting plot-relevant instances in the original where he did show indications of changing for the better. What you wind up with is a loss of the cold, analytical slowly reforming Vegeta, What you get is this slightly schizo Vegeta who spends half his time looking like Worf and the other half looking like an alchoholic who'd be beating his wife and shaking his infant if he didn't have bad guys to fight.
Heh, not to drag this on, but I just remembered the dub actually would invalidate moments where Vegeta *was* a dick sometimes. When Vegeta, in the original, flew off the handle about the notion of destroying Gero's lab early, it was because he wanted to test himself. He says that if any attempts are made to stop Gero from building his creations, there will be blood (heavily paraphrased here). Goku agreed, because he wanted to fight too. Unless I'm mistaken, in the dub Vegeta said the plan itself was flawed and Goku agreed (despite it being a perfectly reasonable plan).
EDIT: Yeah, just checked, in the dub Vegeta said that it would take them too long (as in, 3 years) to gather the Dragon Balls to have Shenron tell them where the lab was. I guess they forgot about that silly little Dragon Radar thingamajig.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

I was born and raised in America and the way Funimation depict Vegeta is what I am accustomed to and sometimes the Japanese way of doing things is hard for me to relate to so I believe that is one of the reasons why I prefer the dub Saiyans and Vegeta. The American version impressed me because I guess I can just relate more to the the Funimation edition. As for those inconsistencies or deviations, they do not really bother me because I do not take the show as serious as some do.Onikage725 wrote:Nostalgia/preference is totally cool. The last statement is not directed at anyone.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

I can understand Original Japanese version of Vegeta over the dub Vegeta. The only things that ever stood out about dub Vegeta was that "Freeza made me bad" and "I wanna beat Goku". That's really the only things about dub Vegeta.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Only things that ever stood out with Vegeta for me was the constant anger and yelling, like he had a chronic case of "male PMS".
I am also confused about the comment of Vegeta's dub and original depictions being so "culturally tied", in that I never got that from either version.
Interesting perspective anyway.

I never was under the impression that they couldn't breathe in space. We see Bardock in space even in the manga, and since the only time in any of the dbz canon (manga, movies, specials, etc) that anyone says anything like they can't might be in the dub. In the japanese and the manga Freeza just says Goku can't survive in space, he never said he couldn't 'breathe' in space and there is a lot more to survival than just breathing. Freeza was able to live in with no food/water or anything in space while he was cut in half and just had a planet explode on him till his dad found him.
First off, welcome to the forum! Now, it does say/imply that Goku can't breathe in space in the Japanese version. And it has been mentioned in this thread that just because it looks a lot like Bardock is in space, he could simply be in the high upper atmosphere. And was said that the reason that Freeza can survive in space is because it is a physical trait of his race and it is something that makes him different from the Saiya-jins.
Oh ya, and one of the rules is no necro-posting.

Not even Freeza can breathe in space. There's nothing to breathe.Kallark wrote:I never was under the impression that they couldn't breathe in space. Thanks, and yea I know about the necro posting thing but I was having problems with registration and had been waiting to post in this thread. The jap anime just says what the manga says, the surviving thing, they never actually say Saiyans can't breathe in space. With Bardock, by Earth standards he'd be in space and even if it was the exosphere there wouldn't be enough to breathe. With planet Vegeta having a 10x greater gravity it would have like a 10x smaller atmosphere than Earth.SSj_Rambo wrote:First off, welcome to the forum! Yeah but you know how that goes when it comes to comics.Chibi Mystic Gohan wrote: Not even Freeza can breathe in space. There's nothing to breathe.
