Dub Gohan deprived of song!! Stephanie Nadolny is a singer?!

Post by Golden Lockhart » Mon Nov 17, 2008 5:57 pm

I thought I'd bring this to the attention of this board (especially those who had not watched "Dead Zone" with the commentary).

It was while watching the scene in which Gohan eats the "apple" and is having his little trip that the speakers in the commentary noted that the very same voice actress not singing "Tenkaichi Gohan" is a professional singer. Now, if they were able to do an english version of the Dragonball opening and closings then why, pray tell, did they not do an english version of "Tenkaichi Gohan" and "Daisuke Piccolo-San"?

It just seems weird that if Stephanie can indeed sing then they could've done it. I just had to get that off of my chest.

It's because Funimation doesn't really care about Dragonball/Z's insert songs. DeeBeeZee a hardcore action show you know, not some martial arts comedy epic.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Is Daisuke Piccolo-san somehow related to Daisuke Gori...? I wonder... :D

In all seriousness, I'm sure it's simply because FUNimation was making a point of moving away as far as possible from the Japanese score and anything associated with it. Look at their dub of DBZ movie 4, which is where they started up on their own after moving away from Saban & Pioneer; Disturbed and Pantera and that style of music is definitely on the other side of the world.

Why didn't they go back and do it for DBZ movie 1, either on the "Ultimate Uncut Edition" or the "Double Feature" version...? Effort. Too much. No-one of any substantial numbers would care.

Had DBZ been a lower tier show, they probably would have dubbed the songs. A lot of shows that Funi brings over now depend on the type of fan that requests things like that. Dragonball Z however sells no matter what, so no extra effort is required.

I think that if FUNi is going to go out of their way to not give a shit, they could at least have a little fun with it and have commentary guys humming their own made-up-on-the-spot BGM as an option.

Ah yes Lord Slug and Disturbed, the way Dragonball was MEANT TO BE HEARD!

I've said this before but if I knew nothing about the dub of Dragonball that would sound like a joke.

It is a shame, especially considering Stephanie Nadolny performs songs for FUNimation all the time. She sings the English versions of certain Yu Yu Hakusho and Case Closed songs, to name a few.

I think they avoided recording a new one because of either...

1.) They didn't want to make English versions considering the track says it's the Japanese music (even though they didn't include the Japanese vocal versions), though I don't think anybody would have been mad if they had dubbed them.

2.) As others have said, it would take effort. Besides, the English-with-Japanese-music track was kind of a last minute add-on, the only real effort required being creating a 5.1 mix. I'm sure FUNi didn't want to spend time/money on something that amounted to an extra (even if they did compose new instrumental versions...). I just don't know.

It's sad, because I would've happily taken dubbed songs as opposed to the instrumental versions we got.

Did she play Maho in Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, or was that Brina Whatever-Brina's-last-name-is? If she did, she's a DAMN good singer at that.
