Minority-to-Majority Opinion of Faulconer
Actually, Faulconer was ghost-written by Mike Smith and one of our own forum members, cRookie_monster. The only theme Faulconer wrote himself was "Guru's Theme". I'm sure there's more information, but I'm not the one to ask.xzero wrote:On another point, one thing I give Faulconer credit for is that he composed a lot of music for the episodes he did, including subtle variations on existing themes. My favorite example of his talent is the Babidi-Kid Buu Theme transition. The themes for Babidi, Majin Buu, Evil Buu, Super Buu, and Kid Buu are all, at their most basic level, the same song, but the variety among the versions heard throughout those episodes makes each theme its own.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
While that is true, it's far easier to simply refer to it as "the Faulconer score" since they all did, in fact, write for that purpose under that employment and not their own.bkev wrote:Actually, Faulconer was ghost-written by Mike Smith and one of our own forum members, cRookie_monster. True, but the way I read xzero's post came off like he thought that Faulconer wrote it. I just wanted to spread the knowledge.

I guess that's why there was so many music composed for the American soundtrack since more than one person composed the music. As for me being Mexican, the English soundtrack is not bad, but it dosen't fit DBZ since it already had its own music. Also it would be kind of nice not to hear the music all the time. It's non-stop music from beginning to end, no breaks.bkev wrote:Actually, Faulconer was ghost-written by Mike Smith and one of our own forum members, cRookie_monster. You have to hear music all the time, or you'll stop watching the show.Super 17 wrote:I guess that's why there was so many music composed for the American soundtrack since more than one person composed the music. The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I believe Mike Smith and Scott Morgan ( cRookie_Monster ) were only at Cakemix until the end of the Cell Games.bkev wrote:Actually, Faulconer was ghost-written by Mike Smith and one of our own forum members, cRookie_monster. Is that proven to be a fact? And when I mean music all the time, I mean music all the time, like non stop for the English soundtrack since the episodes with the Faulconer track music began. Since episode 68, I think, to like 276 for the dub, it was 100% all the way through non-stop music. Not even one break from silence and in the Japanese track, it's pretty much 65% music and the rest silenced for each episode.Raki wrote:You have to hear music all the time, or you'll stop watching the show.
He was speaking in satire, but unfortuately it seems to be true in American audiences. We know nothing of dramatic silences.

Like Eddie Murphy needs to party all the time, kids who watch cartoons need to listen to music all the time. Like Mr Gen-sama said "All kids have short attention spans". We don't watch stuff like Batman: TAS.Super 17 wrote:Is that proven to be a fact? Actually, I wasn't aware of that. I knew that cRookie_monster was heavily involved, but I truly believed that Faulconer composed the majority of the tracks. Thanks for letting me know!bkev wrote:True, but the way I read xzero's post came off like he thought that Faulconer wrote it. I just wanted to spread the knowledge.
The Faulconer score did leave one memorable moment of dramatic silence in the dub score as I recall, by the way. Vegeta's death scene in the Freeza Saga had a couple of seconds of silence music-wise (though there were some air sound effects to make up for it). I recognize that it's only one example, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Another note, I remember an interview Faulconer did for (I think) PlanetNamek back in the day, and as I recall, the "no silence" rule was something Funimation imposed, not a creative decision on his part.
Edit: Here's the interview: http://www.confinedlight.com/PlanetName ... ner_1.html

I think Bruce pretty much sums up the whole Mega Man music thing here:
"If they wanted to use music, they should have tried to get the rights to my music, created new music, or used the Japanese music because Mega Man is NOT Dragonball Z. You can't put them together."

Honestly, it varied from track to track. I would have liked to see some Faulconer music with Ocean, but the track that plays when Krillin & Piccolo look back after Vegeta performs his "final explosion" fits much better than what FUNi chose for that scene.

Oh God, don't even get me started on the later Ocean dub (Android arc up) and their worshiping of their music and voice actors. It's scary.
Equally as scary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYyooJq2oUA
Yes, believe it or not people are mixing the Faulconer stuff over the Menza stuff (not always to great sucess).
I think the whole music situation is a little complicated. The YouTubers who praise Faulconer's music can get very testy when people will upload the dub with Kikuchi's score instead of with his. I don't quite like that attitude, but alas it is the internet.

I liked all of his music. The aforementioned Perfect Cell theme is my second favorite.
His Super Buu theme is my favorite.

One of the reasons Super Buu is my favorite Buu period.
