Because the World Tournament rules say you can't have weapons or armor.

Aside from the training before the Cell Games, the only modern clothing Goku's worn has been a suit and tie. And even then, that's only in the anime and Chichi's doing as a wife trying to force him to be formal (not counting the suit and hat Lunch got him for the tournaments back in early Dragon Ball). This also includes the outfit he wore in the driver's license episode.

Goku's wardrobe has pretty much always consisted of his gi of preference.

Pretty sure her having grown up and being too big to fit into that skimpy outfit did it. :p

What about his t-shirt, jacket, and jeans he wore in the time before the Cell Games? He went and gathered the dragon balls as well as obtained Dende in this outfit, no?

Yes, but she could just as easily be the real Chi-chi about to defeat the fake Chi-chi once and for all.
Fair enough. Of course we won't know for sure until later, but IMO I think the simplest scenario (Mai in disguise) is the best assumption to go on for now.

While we're talking about Goku's modern attire, there's also this model sheetfrom the new special.

Well there's your Goku and then there's "Movieverse Goku".

Modern Goku Clothes: ...
Probably won't count, but there are also all those covers Toriyama did of Goku driving motorcycles or cars in modern clothing.

Yeah, it's not like in the movie he can wear the gi for the entire duration. Audiences would be going "wtf? does he ever change? where did he get that?"

Goku's like Superman (not that anyone should EVER compare the two though, for everyone's sake). He just has it underneath everything else that he wears. One quick change in the phone booth, and viola.

As I said.

Aside from the training before the Cell Games. The relaxing part was Goku's idea of training. The different types of gi don't count as "modern clothing" considering we've seen what the folks in the cities wear. Movie 8, end of series party and driver's license episodes are all non-canon material. As is the new special.

Snow gave Goku the winter clothes, which he wore on top of his gi (it really only consisted of a hat, jacket, gloves and pants), because he was freezing when he went rushing off to Muscle Tower.

The tux at the wedding was obviously something Chichi had to teach him. Remember, same guy who thought marriage was a food.

My bad with not noticing what you had said, but what you're saying sounds like "Other than the different clothes Goku wore (canon or non), he never wears different clothes." I guess it might be me missing something, but if you could clear that up, it just isn't making sense to me.

In other words, "Goku DOES wear different clothes fairly often, but let's ignore those, since he prefers the gi."

But yeah, same single costume for two straight hours does not a good or believable movie make.

Realistically nobody is gonna wear the same cloths everyday. Mr. Toriyama probably didn't feel like thinking of new clothes for Goku to wear. It's just easier to have him in the Kame Gi 24/7.

True, but don't be too surprised if this film borrows from deviations the anime made. For example Bulma has a blue streak in her hair instead of a purple one.

We're talking about a movie where a DEMON KING is released from an imprisonment and is bent on GLOBAL DOMINATION. Said Demon King can shoot ENERGY BEAMS from his hands.

Where are you getting the idea that Dragon Ball was somehow realistic?

Also, Toriyama has shown Goku doesn't wear just the same outfit. We've seen his closet in Z is filled with several of the same gi. Even before then, Goku has pretty much worn only ONE pair of clothing for long periods of time before it's been wrecked to hell.

He appeared in all black in the comics before, yes. Yeah, the movie version is more padded armor than stitched cloth, but that’s a tad different from taking a supposed hick and dressing him up in Club Monaco.
Ducard wrote:While we're talking about Goku's modern attire, there's also this model sheetfrom the new special.
See, the thing is, he only ever changes for a special occasion. Most of the time he can’t wait to get out of those things. In the movie, the new outfits are part of his everyday attire.
SSj Kaboom wrote:But yeah, same single costume for two straight hours does not a good or believable movie make.
Right, and the other aspects of Dragon Ball are pretty self-explanatory. I don’t understand this lingering “realism” fetish in the movie industry; I thought that went out with the ’90s. Or is LOTR somehow less of a movie for its subject matter?
