I still, however, stand by my point that the film does not deserve the flak that it gets. Especially when that flak directly leads to such disruption between people. That was my intended point. I don't care anymore what people think about the movie; I just want the arguments to end.
What I don’t understand is the pro’s (face it, there are sides) personification of the film, as if its feelings are actually hurt by our negativity. Sounds like projection to me. Not that trying to be provocative or anything; that’s honestly what I’m seeing here. None of the anti’s seem to feel disrupted by such petty disagreements, nor do we seem to be “taking the movie too seriously” (quite the opposite, we’re poking fun at it); meanwhile the pro’s do, as is evidenced by the inevitable outrage post that arises after every one of these debates. In the end, I don’t think the issue is really that dividing. We still have fans of both the original and the dub versions of the animé, posting on the same board and participating in the same discussions. Sure, we bicker sometimes, but it doesn’t ever result in utter catastrophe. It’s just a difference in opinion. At the end of the day, we’re all still fans of the same [fundamental] material. And we will remain that way even after the movie’s out.
I don't expect people to think like me. I don't expect anyone to bend over to meet my standards. What I do expect is fairness.
But “fairness” is one of your standards. Not only that, but it’s your own, personal definition of “fairness.” I think these discussions have been perfectly fair. A mutual sharing of opinions… seems fair to me. This idea that everyone’s “ganging up on the movie” and “should back off” has nothing to do with fairness; it’s merely a personalization of the bashing of a really off-kilter adaptation by a majority of the membership. If that’s really too much for you, maybe it would help to take a break, or post in more like-minded company for a while. Because it certainly isn’t going to magically let up any time soon.

Below you can check out some screenshots of the concept art featured in the video.

I'm guessing the first is Chi-Chi. The second is Mai. The third/fourth are Piccolo. And the Last is Goku.

They look pretty cool to me. The Chi-Chi/Mai ones don't really look...well, Chi-Chi and Mai-ish...but still. Interesting pics. And it looks like, at the very least, Piccolo was green in the concept art.

At least Chi-Chi's hair looked more Chi-Chi-ish in the concept art as well.

Piccolo's knight-in-shining-armor cracks me up though. XD

Honestly, those look HORRIBLE.

I'm glad they didn't use them.

This changes my perspective on everything. I think from now on I'll just be glad Piccolo isn't wearing a thong.

Chi Chi and Goku don't look awful. Although I'd much rather have a pale yellow Piccolo then a thong wearing green one.

Had Piccolo been given that outfit, I'd imagine there'd be many "300" parodies.

I figured that the drawing of the chick with the purple hair was Bulma.

I think its funny that this concept of Goku and Travis Touchdown share almost the same hair. I kinda like the hair.

Green Piccolo?!?!?! Let's hope I see something like that in the finished product. I keep hearing, "Oh, he'll be green later," but I'm not buying it until I see it.

Only that first one, which I suppose is Chi Chi is decent, the others are crap.

I don’t know about these. They look like something out of an alternate reality Dragon Ball comic; something I might read, but certainly nothing that could believably pass as the original characters. It may just be the fact that they seem way too… “movie-fied.”

The Chi-chi model gets props for retaining some semblance to her namesake, but the downside is that she’s built and dressed like a brawler. Not that she hasn’t exhibited any violent qualities in the past, but I think we can all agree fighting isn’t exactly her modus operandi. Were we really meant to believe that she would go from looking like that, to becoming the overbearing mother of Gohan who wants nothing more for him than to become a white-collared perfectionist? Even forgoing that misstep, the outfit would have benefited more from being left alone. It seems rather tasteless to have traditional Japanese-style garb devolve into midriff-exposing leather straps. If you’re going for the Street Fighter physiognomy anyway, why not simply let her look like Chun-Li?

Poor Piccolo suffers from an extremely literal interpretation of who his character is supposed to be: a king and an alien; meanwhile he stands (rather uncomfortably, one might assume) bereft of all the Namekian idiosyncrasies that set him apart from the plethora of extraterrestrial green men in fiction; distinct as they are that I can only describe them as “the fleshy patches,” “biological wristbands” and “those groove things.” Still, he’s greener than Marsters, and at least he has a proper cape (not a fucking hooded cloak made of… embroidered leather?).

Mai (or whomever that’s supposed to be) looks like a Matrix-reject. It seems even from an early stage her subdued appearance was to be discarded in favor of amping up the sex appeal. Though, I probably would have appreciated the punk chic better than “leotard-clad ninja with conveniently-emphasized cleavage.” Not that I’m gay, man, but sexuality doesn’t always have to be such a loud cliché.

And this Goku honestly strikes me as if Jet Li dressed himself drunk one morning and decided to go trekking. Honestly. The general idea is right, but the implementation is all wrong. I can’t tell if his sleeves are rolled up or if they thought adding bulbous rings to a martial arts uniform would somehow benefit the wearer in combat.

For reasons unclear to me, it is characteristic of Hollywood to want to approach adaptations as more reinventions than anything else, as if they must literally do away with every familiar aspect of the source material and build it up from scratch. My guess is it’s a combination of entitlement—after all, they bought the rights, so the property is naturally “theirs”—a warped, statistics-driven view of “what the public wants,” and unfamiliarity with and/or disinterest in the subject matter. I mean, I’m not knocking the creative process here; nobody wants a Xerox-copy of “Dragon Ball: The Manga” printed in 35mm format, as I hope we’ve established by now. It’s just that, these deviations don’t seem to serve any other purpose than simply to deviate.

If you laud the current changes and lament these early sketches, I don’t really know what to say. They seem to be about on-par with each other in terms of dissimilarity with the canon. I bet you anything if what we have now was down on paper and something else was on film, we’d be witnessing the same uniform indisposition toward their likenesses.

EDIT:

Oh Kami… the most characteristic feature of Bulma, staring a bunch of fans right in the face, and yet it still goes unrecognized. If that doesn’t say something about the job they’re doing, then I don’t know what does.

That reminded me that I had this picture saved. I saw it on another website. The person who made it said the movie looks more like No More Heroes then Dragon Ball.

I saw that, and it's pretty cool. The difference in the outfit and the arm... things makes it obvious it's not supposed to be series-Piccolo, so...

I have got my first set of Live Action Dragonball mercandise... A pack of stickers. Sad I know, but it's pretty cool.

They look pretty authentic, I will try and scan them up a little later, but no promising as my scanner can be a pain in the ass when it wants to.

All in all there is 21 stickers with seven being the dragonballs! I'm debating whether to stick them somewhere or keep them in mint condition.

I have just realised I am a bit of a nerd.... :(
