Let's all please assume he does.
But, yeah Liam, that IS the problem right there, he's a walking, talking steryotype, and he's in the show ALL THE TIME. Funimation did the only thing they could, and gave him a very proper, educated voice to attempt to offset it a little bit. Go listen to his Japanese voice. They freakin' went along with what was drawn to accentuate it, and he talks in broken sentances AND refers to himself in the third person -_-;;;
SJ Dragonball Graphic Novel, Volume 9, page 60. That is all.

I never considered that's why he has that voice in the English dub, but I'd bet money that you're right. Good thinking, young padawan.

Another point of interest...they didn't edit Assistant Black (or whatever his title was), and he was drawn in the same lip style. Perhaps Viz received complaints about that, so they changed it for Popo?

With Assistant Black, in the manga anyways, his lips appear to be the same the same color as his skin. He just has full lips like a lot of African Americans do, myself included. It's when they're big red lips that the sambo thing comes into play.

You own them in spanish and want to read them in english, but a simple "god damn" changed to just "damn" is holding you back from reading it english?

Whats the difference?
I was talking about how Viz seems to be giving in to pressure, At first Viz brought us Shonen Jump and they were all for uncut manga and keeping everything loyal to the original... I didn't mean to be a prick or anything with that comic... it was just to point out how SJ is editing more and more as time goes on, be it small things like cigarettes in Hikaru no Go or full-on changing character names/looks in Dragonball. The "god damn" example was just to make that point, I actually like that change myself, sorry about that.
SD Hero is right, he IS a stereotype in the Japanese version, he talks like he's dumb and he refers to himself as Popo... "Popo this"..."Popo that"...and I applaud you for bringing up his educated speech in English, very good observation!

Could someone provide me with some examples of the bad translation in Viz DB? I can't check them myself (I live in Poland, you know), but from what I've heard, it's very good, censorship aside.
It's party time, Ginyu style!

It's actually excellent censorship aside... but the censorship puts a damper on it IMO... ~_~

I'm too lazy to show you some actual quotes and stuff...
Basically, Viz does a pretty good job at translating. But there are some instances where they could have translated things better. It's still pretty good; it's not like they completely change the overall message.
