I just got done recording an Audio Thought thing on this and figured I'd post the script I had here with my thoughts.

OK let’s start this off. First off one of the major points I should…uh…point out is…This special is not for the common fan. Namely the common American fan. If all your looking for is “ZOMGz HARDCORE ACTION THE R0KZ0RZ BRUCE FAULCONER” this special isn’t for you. The fighting is fairly lack luster. What this special is, is basically fan service. It’s for people to see the series in a far more comedic light like the way it was before Piccolo Daimao’s arrival. Yet set in the Post-Buu Era. So for me this was highly enjoyable.

Now some people are saying they don’t like the concept of Vegeta having a brother. Saying it came out of left field. Well hello…That’s Toriyama’s style. He loves pulling things out of left field…Anyone recall “And I’m Raditz. Your big brother. Oh and by the way you’re from an extinct race of space pirates and were sent here to destroy this planet but hit your head and forgot. Nice to meet you.”…The concept of Tarble was abrupt, random, and screams Toriyama.

People also are questioning. Didn’t Vegeta say that him and Goku were the only full bloods left? Well that’s true. But Tarble seems to have been sent off basically to die. Almost exiled because of his inability to fight. As far as Vegeta was concerned. He was dead and gone.

I thought the comedy in this special was amazing. Namely the Goku/Vegeta interaction. It’s what the majority of people seem to want. That rivalry but more comedic at times. Come on. Eating contest. Stealing each other’s food. The ending line between the two. I had a total fangasm watching their interaction. I mean seriously. How many fanfics have you read and seem similar stuff? Like I said, total fan service. And I loved it.

Like I said, the fights were a little boring. But they kept me entertained. The character interaction made it for me. Characters throwing out attacks like Yamcha and the Souki-Dan. Piccolo and the Makankosappo. And I had to laugh at Kuririn and Yamcha having their Gi’s on underneath their outfits. I’m glad it wasn’t set up like the typical DBZ Movie. Villain shows up. Heroes get their ass kicked. Pull a miracle at the end Via Transformation, Genki-Dama, or super attack. 13 times was enough. This special was at least something fresh.

Another important point is Vegeta’s character. People are saying he’s out of character. But I don’t think he is. Vegeta’s by far the most well developed character by Toriyama. He was developed slowly over time. In this special we see Vegeta wanting to avenge his brother and fight it like it was a family thing. Caring about his brother. Saying it was an honor to meet his brothers wife. Referring to Tarble as Uncle to Trunks. Yes that would be very out of character for Cell Era Vegeta. Even early Buu Era Vegeta to a point. I realize that Vegeta viciously slaughtered his own partner in the past and even Raditz said that he won’t hesitate to kill his own brother. But this is a different Vegeta. He’s learned the value of family. This is a whole 2 years after his sacrifice against Buu. Vegeta has new values. He’s not a cold blooded Saiya-jin like he used to be. People need to realize this. I thought Vegeta’s character was perfectly written for this. It’s like the final stage of Vegeta’s character in Toriyama’s mind. Toriyama may not have written this thing word for word scripting wise. But it is his concept and my guess is he had some major input.

One other thing I see complaints about is that Tarble was never mentioned during the whole 28’th Budokai/Uub stuff. Therefore how can he exist. Uh, what do you expect?

Kakarot. Why are you entering this tournament?

Well because.

I have a brother named Tarble that appeared 8 years ago. He’s very short.

I know…I was there,

I’m just saying.

I realize Toriyama never even considered this character when writing the end of the franchise. But saying he wasn’t mentioned therefore can’t exist is just silly.

Anyway I think I’ve hit up any major points I wanted to. All in all I sound this to be something new and refreshing. I enjoyed it. Loved the new Cha-La animation. Loved that they kept the BGM from the series in tact. I smiled the entire way through.

I don't know if anyone's said anything about this yet, but I love the name for Aka's (or is it Abo Cado like Goten and Trunks said?) attack. "Wahaha no Ha". Friggin amazing.

EDIT: Oh, and Kuririn with hair wearing a Kame gi looks really weird.

Other EDIT:

Exactly. I can't believe something so simple has to actually be explained. The way Vegeta acted in this movie was NOT out of character.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

What exactly does "Wahaha no Ha" translate to?

Oh yea! I always crack up when I hear that. Speaking of his attacks, I'm confused with that big red ball attack. What did Goku actually do? To me it looked liked Goku used the Kamehameha and it had no effect (obviously it did, but it looked like the beam died out and the ball was still there.) Then next thing I know, Goku punches him. What happened in between those two moments?

Just looking at the last few parts of the manga that happen 10 years after Buu, Vegeta had mellowed out a lot. Hell, even the end of the Buu saga was similar. The way he acted in the special didn't feel wrong to me.

Loved the comedy and throwback to old Dragon Ball humor. The animation was beautiful. Watching it almost brought a tear to my eye. Like others, I hope Toei considers doing more Dragon Ball specials in the future.

Well, I don't know Japanese, but I figured the "Wahaha" part was just a joke on a stereotypical evil laugh.

He has arguing that Trunks couldn't be a Saiyan because there was only him, Goku, and Gohan left. If he had any suspicion at all that Table was alive, he would've made a remark about it, even if it was just saying his name to see if Trunks responded.

Then just about every long running franchise out there does that. If a series is going to run a long period of time. Odds are it's going to rehash a few plotlines. So a brother arrived. Big deal. It hardly had any impact on the Special anyway. What? Does 30 seconds of Tarble explaining something suddenly ruin DragonBall?

Like I said. Tarble was dead to him. He had no thought of him being alive. In addition...TORIYAMA WROTE THAT STUFF 15 YEARS PRIOR...Come on. Is it necessary to nitpick an area that doesn't actually contradict anything?

I think a lot of the people saying "Vegeta is acting out of character" are probably coming from a dub standpoint, where Vegeta is just a loud cranky midget.

Okay so I waited up al night and the damn Jump browser didn't work but now I've seen it (thanks to Kanzentai!) and all in all I have to say that the special was really refreshing. It has been a while since I had this kind of a smile on my face. Dragonball has to be something of a greatness if it can give people this much energy! WOOHOO! I'm so psyched!

I do wonder though...

Where the hell were Tenshinhan and Chaozu, and why weren't Tarble, Abo or Cado surprised by the fact that Goku and Gotenks could turn Super Saiyan? They acted as if they'd seen them before. The promo art and opening featured Ten and Chaozu, but neither were to be found.

...Then again, the promo art also showed a bald Kuririn, blond Lunch and Vegeta with his Boo saga clothes. >>

I do agree with Gozar, though. Typical American dub-only fans will be completely disappointed by this special. It's definitely fan service, mainly for the Japanese since this is the first new animated piece for Dragon Ball in 11 years since GT ended (not counting the Budokai openings or Sagas, which never got to Japan). So the "hardcore" tone they're expecting isn't going to be there.

I absolutely loved the interaction between everyone. Goku and Vegeta especially had the best. Did love how we actually got to see Bulma and Vegeta have a marital spout. We get enough of Chichi yelling at Goku, but not enough of Bulma and Vegeta actually arguing.

I normally hate Roshi's current voice in the games...but for some reason, he sounds decent in this. Guess it's cause he's not shouting out every line. :p Anyone else wonder wtf Oolong was doing dressed up as a cocktail waitress while serving drinks and sandwiches?

I really wish it was a few minutes longer. I'd have liked to see fat Gotenks actually attempt fighting. Would have been nice to have Piccolo say more dialogue instead of shout two lines (one being Makankosappou).

Also...I really wished they'd had gotten either Mato or Daimao to sub this. The subbed version's kinda wonky and feels like a mediocre fansub. One moment we get Kakarrot, the next we get Kakrote. We also got Viz's one-timer, "Light of Death" yet they kept Sokidan and Kienzan, meanwhile translating Yamcha's signature attack. So...inconsistencies are rampant. Also weird seeing Chichi refer to Goku as "Mr. Goku" just as they sense Tarble arriving.

All in all, I was giddy as hell watching this and would LOVE to have this on DVD in one way or another.
