Double Feature Blu-Ray: Worth It?
Double Feature Blu-Ray: Worth It?
I do not have a Blu-Ray Player. But some time down the road I assume I will. So I ask. Are the Blu-Ray Double Features worth it? Does it really look any better than the DVD? I mean this is only my thought, but I assume that the Blu-Ray would also bring out the flaws in this footage considering how old it is.

I am not sure about the TV specials, but live action movies in 1080p on Blu-Ray look stunning, even on a SDTV. Of course, to get the full benefit you will need to have a large 1080p display with good PQ. From what I have seen of the Dragon Ball Z movies on Blu-Ray, they are very sharp in 1080p. Also, the movies were scanned in from 35mm film, whereas the specials were on 16mm film (just like the rest of the series), so the movies will, of course, look much better overall.Gozar wrote:I do not have a Blu-Ray Player. As for my opinion on whether or not to buy them, I would say yes. I am buying as much content on Blu-Ray as I can since I want the highest quality possible (1080p24 + Linear PCM rocks). Overall, these should look better and sound better on Blu-Ray.

Judging form the DVD release alone, I know the season sets won't look good on Blu-Ray.Yi Xing Long wrote:Another interesting thing is that these specials on Blu-Ray should be a good indicator of what the TV series will look like once Funimation releases it on Blu-Ray since they both come from 16mm film. The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

You don't know that for sure since the video has been downscaled to standard definition. We don't know what process they used to do this, so the HD release should not be as blurry and should be able to show more detail. Only time will tell, so we will have to wait until its release to find out.Raki wrote:Judging form the DVD release alone, I know the season sets won't look good on Blu-Ray.Yi Xing Long wrote:Another interesting thing is that these specials on Blu-Ray should be a good indicator of what the TV series will look like once Funimation releases it on Blu-Ray since they both come from 16mm film. I own the Movies 1 & 2, and the Broly double feature (regrettably) on Blu-ray, and they're gorgeous. I'm planning on picking up Movies 3 & 4, and the Coola films as soon as I'm financially able. Until Toei releases their Dragon Box masters on Blu-ray, these releases are as beautiful as you can buy.
The quality of their film masters and their TV masters are totally different. The films, coming from Funi, will always look better than the series on Blu-ray.Yi Xing Long wrote:Another interesting thing is that these specials on Blu-Ray should be a good indicator of what the TV series will look like once Funimation releases it on Blu-Ray since they both come from 16mm film. Re: Double Feature Blu-Ray: Worth It?
For FUNimation's DragonBall Z releases, the Blu-rays aren't worth it. FUNimation's remastering work, in fact, completely destroys the point of doing a high definition transfer. Blu-ray in general, however, is entirely worth buying. Many movies look amazing on Blu-ray, and with players steadily dropping in prices and quality titles coming out there's no reason not to check it out.Gozar wrote:I do not have a Blu-Ray Player. I may be wrong, but aren't the movies 32mm stock?Another interesting thing is that these specials on Blu-Ray should be a good indicator of what the TV series will look like once Funimation releases it on Blu-Ray since they both come from 16mm film. I'll have to pick this up and check it out.

You may have a point, but I still don't think missing lines will look good in Blu-Ray. Isn't the whole point of Hi-Def to show the beauty and fine detail of a show, movie or program?Yi Xing Long wrote:You don't know that for sure since the video has been downscaled to standard definition. I DO NOT Recommend the blu ray versions. If you have a proper setup, all the MAJOR flaws from the "remastering" will be seen.
If you would like to watch anime in HD, I suggest Innocence (GitS2) import, Paprika, and Freedom. They all look superb and actually use the HD Audio to the max. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA are superb with these releases.

The movies are on 35mm. I was referring to the TV series and TV specials when I mentioned 16mm.MajinVejitaXV wrote:I may be wrong, but aren't the movies 32mm stock?Another interesting thing is that these specials on Blu-Ray should be a good indicator of what the TV series will look like once Funimation releases it on Blu-Ray since they both come from 16mm film. D'oh! I meant 35mm. Leave it to me to type a post when I'm half asleep and make up a new type of film ;pYi Xing Long wrote: The movies are on 35mm. I was referring to the TV series and TV specials when I mentioned 16mm.

I would expect Funi to correct the missing lines and whatnot before a Blu-Ray release, because it would be their intended format of release since they scanned in the footage at 1080p24. I feel as if the DVD release was just to get the complete series out to consumers as an inexpensive alternative. The DVD release is more than likely just an advertisement for the Blu-Ray release that is to come.Raki wrote:Metalwario64 wrote:You may have a point, but I still don't think missing lines will look good in Blu-Ray. Please read Rule #3:Felliko wrote:Yeah it is.
You have to explain why you think it is worth it to buy the item, otherwise your post is considered spam.RULE # 3: "ESSENTIAL" POSTING
You don't need to have a post in every thread. When you first sign up, you may be tempted to go through every single thread and add in something to get your two cents in. Before you post, ask yourself... are you offering anything new to the conversation that hasn't come before? Are you providing information others may not know? If the answer is "no" to either of these questions, re-evaluate whether or not you should reply. Saying nothing other than "I agree" or "Yes" isn't really helping anyone. A post that is only one line long is not a post. If you don't have more than that to say, you don't have ANYTHING to say. Furthermore, posting some kind of (non)"witty" image ("A Wizard Did It" or "Big Ban Attack", etc.) is also not a post.
