DragonBall Z for Arcade

Post by Izlude » Tue Sep 21, 2004 4:33 pm

I remember like a few years ago reading on some old site, I think DB-Unlimited or Kaioshin's Planet about these two games for Arade, they were both 2D fighters much like the Butoden games, but much higher quality, almost like Shin Butoden, and nothing like UB22 was.

I can't recall anything else other than that, but I'm gonna go emu hunting and see if I can't dig'em up. DBZ fighters were definitly much better in 2D, but one in the arcade? Its gotta be godly!

I've got the second one; plays all right on MAME. What's nice is that it's got Japanese AND English language options built-in! WHOA, sweet~

Don't remember much more about it (haven't played in quite some time), but yeah, it's got significantly higher resolution graphics. I think it was also the original "Mr. Satan with a jetpack" game (where the Budokai series takes its hint from; just goes to show you how hard-core, loving, and caring those DIMPS folks are).

Thats whats great about arcade games, the majority of them are bi-lingual (MVS/Neo-Geo anyone?).

I got both games downloading now, and I'll see how they play on MAME. Maybe I'll take a buncha caps and post'em here if I can. I could never figre out MAME's screencap functions, furthermore providing problems for sprite rippers everywhere

I wanna see Mr.Satan in action in the 2nd one though!

You just press F12 on the keyboard, and it saves the current screen to a PNG file in whatever the natural resolution of the game is. Saves to the /snap/ directory.

Oh I see, I'm used to in-game screencap sub menu's like in Kawaks or ZSNES with bg/sprite disabling shortcut keys. I am a noob when it comes to MAME :P

I still want my CPS3 emulation! Street Fighter 3:New Generation awaits!

I would, but, the PS2 version of SF:AE doesnt have...-drumroll- NETPLAY! But, the X-Box version will! I sold my soul to Funi, Nintendo, and now...Microsoft @_@ I hope 4Kids isnt next...that or Sega, I already sold my soul to them once, I think they are coming back for a refund!

Speaking of netplay,. I think MAME has netplay, DBZ2 might make for some fun netplay if anyone else on a Kaillera server has it.

I remember that one of them is in a local arcade around here, but it's wonky and works only 1 out every 13 times. What's even worse, is the arcade operator refuses to have it fixed, and even when I offered to fix it for half what the guy that fixes them charges, he still declines.

And slightly OT, why the Hell is SVC Chaos only on X-Box? Many sites reported it would be released first on PS2, then come out for X-Box later like SF Anniversary, but now that it's here, it's an X-Box exclusive! Man, now there's FOUR games that make me want an X-Box.
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

SvC Chaos was released for PS2, only in Japan :P

Sony(Of America) does not want any 2D video games on their system that run on older hardware, unless they are special packages (Like last years King of Fighters 2000/2001).

But trust me, SvC Chaos isnt that great, or at least, the arcade version, Geese and Zero have infinites, the balance isnt all good ethier. I heard though in the console versions this stuff was fixed.

I think X-Box is quicky becoming the system for fighting game fans, I mean comon, netplay is where its at! Microsoft needs to buy Nintendo and get some Smash Bros on that shiz! And while they are at it, buy the DBZ license, along w/ Sega-Sammy Studio's so they can make us another kickass DBZ game.

You do know that most of the upcoming PS2 fighters will be online, right? That, and online play isn't always what makes games fun. Hell, I don't even WANT online play for my PS2, even if I had the money. Lag issues and such are way too high.

And I want SVC Chaos only because I'm a big fighting fan. I'm trying to collect all of the fighting games I can, even the very shitty ones.

Anyway, does anyone know all of the rosters for these two games, and any moves they have?

I played one arcade game... Wasn't very good... at all... It was also in Japanese, so I had little idea of what the hell was going on. Though, when you played Android 20, Android 19 would waddle 'round in the background.

That fat freak.

I find the Budoukais to be my top favorites. I personally don't care for most 2D fighters, though I do appreciate some. But I'd NEVER buy a system for one, especially X-Box.

And I hope Microsoft NEVER buys Nintendo.

Damn it.

I think a perfect Dragonball game for PS2 would actually have no people from the actuall Dragonball anime...What? yes thats right, hear me out...

Imagine this "Dragon World" but online and each player is a custom made person that you make yourself like a wrestiling game, but it would be Akira Toriyama style. Now in this world every one is looking for the Dragonball's and sometimes people will have one ball that someone need's so they hunt them down and try to kill them for it... or beat them up and take it.... You would build up you person untill you are some kinda super being..I guess (lol) you could be good or bad... well, you get the idea.

But such a thing will never happen. They will always use stories from the anime like they been doing forever....

Well, the thing about those create-a-character features is that familiar characters still tend to exist within the game. Though it sounds more like a MMORPG you have in mind. Either way, I tend to doubt that a Dragon Ball game without any existing characters would sell well... But I do think that would be neat as an additional feature, to be able to create a likeness of yourself to compete against Gokuu and Vegeta and everyone.

Well lets see, upcoming fighters on the PS2 are -

Fight Club
Mortal Komat:Deception (Will have online play)
DragonBall Z:Budokai 3 (Limited online features)
Yu Yu Hakusho:Dark Tournment
Samurai Showdown V/Special
Capcom Fighting Evolution (Capcom's last 2D fighter )
Guilty Gear Isuka
King of Fighters 2002/2003
Rumble Rose
Def Jam Vendetta:Fight for New York

MK is the only one that will have full online playability. But I think today, netplay is quickly becoming a very important aspect of any muiltiplayer game since competition is becoming harder and harder to find, and gameplay is becoming shallower. But has for lag, well, lag is and always will be.

Anyways, back OT, I've yet to try getting DBZ2 to run on Mame, I havent felt like bothering setting Mame up properly and stuff, but when I do, I'll take some screenies, and I'll have a full rooster list, although I read DBZ2 only has 10-11 characters, while the first only 8 or so.

Tekken 5 is online. So is that upcoming PS2 pro-wrestling game, and the final iteration of Virtua Fighter 4 (the one that was recently released in arcades) and the King of Fighters game on the new NEO hardware... and they'll all be for PS2.

Tekken 5 isnt really online, it uses a sort of Hi-Score/Ranking system. Sega's machines also use it.

So far, no other KOF games besides 2002/2003 are announced for PS2 and its not gonna have netplay.

But...another VF4 you say? Jesus...its like Street Fighter II...we need a VF5!

*small voice* Dreamcast and Gamecube all the way!

But seriously, the Gamecube isn't the best for fighting games, but since I happen to be a big fan of the genre and a big fan of the Gamecube as well, I decided to pick up the Dreamcast and many of the great fighting games for low prices as you can expect.

Plus there's "rumors" abound of SNK vs. Capcom: Chaos being ported to Dreamcast, as Playmore has been known to still make games for Dreamcast.

Of course this rumor probably will never produce any real product, but it is nice for me to dream.

I love my Dreamcast. They should still make games here for it. Now THERE was a system without much lag online.

And, even though it probably won't come to America (from The Magic Box)
"SNK Playmore mentioned that The King of Fighters 94 Re-Bout for PS2 will support online battles."

And, as an added tidbit of info, here's Bandai's Playstation Portable lineup:
"Bandai - Lumines, Soukyuu no Fafner, Dragonball Z, Naruto, Patlabor, One Piece"
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!
