Brakus wrote:People here seem to forget that the Japanese have to approve what gets released here before it goes on the market. I would think Toei has an interest in protecting its product... FUNi's releases of anything Dragon Ball releated is R1/R2/R4; since Japan is R2, Toei wanted to minimize any reverse importing that could happen, which is probably why Toei didn't give FUNimation Dragon Box footage, or even the next episode preview footage to the DVDs as well.
Nein. First off, if the word is to be trusted, the Spanish "remastered" DVD's are DragonBox-based and Region 2 as well and therefore could be reverse imported. Granted, they're PAL, but the region is the same.

Second, I think you're taking the "Japanese have to approve" angle a bit too literally. Every time FUNimation wants to do a release, they don't have to fly in an executive from Toei and screen it for him. There are stipulations in their contract that dictate what they can and cannot do as licensee of the series. The uber-literal interpretation you're presenting was born as a means of people poorly trying to excuse FUNimation's half-ass mistakes (bad coverart, widescreen, etc.).

Aside from that, as stated, FUNimation's mistakes here just seem...well, half-ass. Still. Not earth shattering or deal breaking, just...dumb.

Is it just me, or are the graphical differences between the DBox/Season Sets/Funi releases of GT way too small compared to the DBox/Season Sets/Funi releases of Z? Seriously, it's really hard to care.

I care about the eyecatches and lack of previews. That's it. Video wise, if the bitrate is better'n the singles, I'm ready to buy this.
[quote="Brakus"]For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". Differences between singles and DBox, yeah, too small. Differences with the GT sets, however, is HUGE.

The remastered GT set so far is blurry as all hell.

I wouldn't say blurry as hell. That so far belongs to Z. This is just clean; it doesn't go as far as missing lines and stuff... least, I don't think.

I think he just means, "they're a problem, but not a big/important enough one to me to outweigh buying the set if the video quality is better than the singles."

Which it probably is.

There's no question that this presentation is far superior to that of the season sets, it's just that they're a step back in image quality when compared to the single releases.

Though I'm interested to see how the encodes hold up, the GT singles were decent but could have been better.

Here's that original instrumental + dub opening mix I promised.

Had to go ahead and actually use the second animation from later episodes rather than the first episodes it appears in. For whatever reason, the quality of the intro was horribly close to VHS quality in the late 20s and 30s compared to the 60s (I used episode 64's opening credits).

I know what you mean, the GT TV special also looks just as bad, very blurry with bad colours.

Yeah, that annoyed me that they didn't bother remastering or providing a better quality version on the Dragon Box. To my knowledge, Bardock and Trunks both got remasters for the Dragon Box. They basically pulled a "Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans" with the GT special.

Whoa!, I thought we were talking exclusively about the FUNimation releases, I didn't think the GT Dragonbox openings and TV special would suffer from the problems, I always figured they gave FUNimation a crappy master from an old TV station or something.

God, that sounds so much better. The original version just sounded so much fuller than this one. Mignogna's vocals sound better because of it.

The only nitpick is that the English version is a ittty bitty bit sharper than the Japanese version. (Or, you could say the Japanese one is flatter than the English one :P )

Just finished listening to it, phenomenal job, definitely a step up.

Mind doing the ending songs now? :P (I believe they had karaoke versions, but I'm no expert)

My guess is that unless the GT DBox had instrumentals for all the themes (don't own that one...yet), it would be a bit difficult since the Karaoke recordings would be for the whole song, rather than the TV sized ones. Also, they probably still have the Japanese backup vocals (at least, the Karaoke versions of the songs I have do).

Hmm, one thing I was just thinking, does this mean we'll get a full version of English Dan Dan when it comes time for episode 64, or just the original? Either is good, as long as it doesn't end up like the many insert songs in Z.

I do not know where you guys are getting all the evidence that this releases video quality is worse then the last one from. All I have seen is one image on this thread from this set.
