New SSJ5 Theme

Post by cRookie_Monster » Thu Dec 04, 2008 9:24 am

I've had this in the oven for a while...but haven't done much baking cause I've been waiting for a drummer friend of mine...

Ah well I did the drums myself ;)

Here's the mp3:

Here's the low quality Utube vid:

Yes I mostly diverged from the Faulconer sound XD. There's still some Faulconerish drums near the end if that is your thing.

Thanks to VeggieXD for having me do this!

'Faulconer-esque' track on epic overdrive I'd say. Very nicely arranged. Was not confusing, nor did it deviate from the main hook. Out of personal preference though, I've grown tired of listening to the usual sound effects that accompany the Faulconer-like tracks. Nonetheless, this piece was very well done, and I'd love to hear it revised with a different set of instruments/sounds replacing the synths, and various sound effects scattered throughout the piece. Again, awesome stuff!

Thanks :) though I don't really consider this to be a Faulconer-esque track...even though it does share a few sounds.

Hell, I can even tell you how I made this track because it's not under Dr. Evil's trade secret blanket.

The drums are a mixture of Storm Drum II and "The Artist Drums" + another kit that actually is a "Faulconer" kit.

The lead sound is a combo of a reverb drenched real electric guitar, a vocoded French horn from the East West Quantum Leap Gold library, and a lightly played instrument that was used in the SSJ3 theme.

The vocoded speech like sounds are from NI's Reaktor. It's me saying "Super Saiyan" backwards and run through a vocoded string patch with added delay(echo FX)

The rhythm guitar is a real 7 string guitar coupled with a real 5 string bass...there's only 2 tracks in the entirety of the Faulconer music that use 7 real string guitars ("Destruction" and it's faster unnamed twin brother). Very few Faulconer tracks use real bass...and 100% of those that do were recorded by me.

Chord\pad wise I used an instrument I'm fond of using since before my DBZ days...though it does show up in some DBZ themes like 17&18's theme and Pikkon's Theme. I won't name that one specifically even though it comes off my own personal gear that Faulconer doesn't and never did own. I also put a sparkly instrument over the top that is not in any DBZ track to my knowledge though it does come from one of the main DBZ synth machines.

NEar the end I bring in more Storm Drum II toms and do a kind of drum solo played in via the Roland Hand sonic MIDI controller. The drums there are pretty heavily processed with compression and EQ. They are also sent at varying degrees to a secondary FX channel that has an amp simulator, delay, and some kinda modulation effect..I forgot what. A choir sound that was in DBZ quite a bit comes in for a bit but is twisted by a Flanger effect. It's quickly overwhelmed by some guitar riffs I fade in and out and drench with reverb and delay(echo). The guitar riffs continue fading in and out with an increasing edge using wah FX and pinch harmonics. Again real guitar was usually more of a novelty in Faulconer music than it was the norm.

That electronic sound at the end is the same one that I mentioned early that's used in Pikkon and 17&18's theme but I don't think it was ever used that aggressively in DBZ.

To me the standouts in the this track are the Storm Drum II sounds and the weird effect of combining the electric guitar with a vocoded high quality french horn sound (I dunno what possessed me to do that...I don't think I've ever heard of anyone trying that before). I was eager to use Storm Drum II cause I just recently purchased it ;) I like to play with new toys! Oh yeah and the vocoder sounds of me saying "Super Saiyan" backwards also play pretty prominently. None of those things are "Faulconer" specific. But yeah there are some common sounds in there I guess...and I was one of the minds behind Faulconer so I'll never escape that lol.

I have to agree. Sounds pretty cool! Reminds me on the american Street Fighter II - The Animated Movie score (which is awesome in my opinion).

Just out of curiosity, if you can answer this, what did the SSJ3 theme use (real guitar or synth)?

Sure just cause I think it's pretty dern obvious to most musician types. It's a synth. Bruce didn't have a guitar player after I left....so everything after the Grand Kai themes is fake.

What is synth? What do you mean they are fake?

You can find all the information you want here. What he means by "fake" is that the sounds are produced by a computer instead of an instrument.
