Oooh, he looks more like a Goku...but the thing is though is that Chatwin (or "Chatku" as Kaiser likes to call him XD) pulls off an innocent Goku look but he is SO deadpan in comparison to the one we know. Like in the trailer he should be blown-away by the capsule bike. Oy!Snail wrote:I reckon' Goku should've been recast with say..Jon Foo.

It's funny how that worked out for me. I originally thought that Gohan shouldn't be in the movie, as Goku having lived his life to adulthood with a parent figure would have to cause too much of a deviation in Goku's character, which I guess it did.Masako-kun wrote:Kaiser and I both agree that Grandpa Gohan and Roshis' actors should have been switched. What do you guys reckon?
But I kind of like him being there from what I've seen of him. Something about the badass old man stock character that I like.
On the other hand, Yun-Fat being cast as Roshi was a huge relief to me and one of the early details I was glad to hear. Yet he's turned out to be one of my biggest disappointments in how the movie's turned out, to no fault of the actor.
"Okay, let's talk Roshi..."
"Roshi. Right. Ancient looking old man... Bow-legged, bald head, long beard, almost always wearing sun glasses and a turtle shell... Really perverted and light-hearted..."
"Right, right... Okay, throw away the glasses and turtle shell, downplay the perversion... Shave the beard and give him some hair... and let's not make him look too old..."
"He uh... also lives alone on a small island in the "Kame House"..."
"...I'm thinking we should go with the homeless bum look."
"You hate Dragonball fans, don't you...?"
Well.. that's kind of a racist issue. I don't agree with it either.Snail wrote:To this day it boggles my mind. How hard was it to have Chow-Yun-Fat don a beard, and shaven head? It's really an unnecessary change in character appearance. Would it have really affected the plot? Yun-Fat appeared more like Roshi in Pirates: At World's End. Embarassing no? Quite the dismal.
Look up "Pirates of the caribbean banned from china."

Reports suggest the Film Bureau, which is government controlled, didn't approve of the movie's portrayal of souls of the dead or the ferocious "octopus-faced" character, Davy Jones, played by actor Bill Nighy.JAPPO wrote:Well.. that's kind of a racist issue. I don't agree with it either.

Okay, I've finally sat through and watched it.
I think I just had a fangasm.
First of all, there are a lot of things about this movie that do dissapoint me. Master Roshi, No Krillin, Chatwin's emotions(but I'm hoping I haven't seen all there is to see of this one, yet), and other things. However, compared to the last trailer, this one is looking up to be very, very decent. I'm more hyped than ever to see this.
The new title doesn't really affect me that much. I actually prefer it to be called "Evolution" instead of just "Dragonball". That is, because it isnt' really "Dragonball" because so much has changed. However, there is still enough there for me to say, "Okay, this is a Dragonball movie". Perhaps the second movie will just be called "Dragonball"?
This movie is shaping up to be pretty good for me overall. The only thing that really gets to me is Chatwin's portrayal of Goku. It just isn't very much like Goku(Besides a few things here and there). I'm just not seeing his happy-go-lucky enthusiasm here. Master Roshi's portrayal is a farther second, but not that big of a deal to me.
I'm basically going to go see this just to enjoy it. I'm not going to sit and critisize it all the way through, because it's just a hollywood adaptation. I'm going to view it as that and that alone. Besides, if I wanted this to be just like the original than...well, I'd watch the original.

Mind you, I'm merely judging the appearance of movie-verse Roshi.
I'd like to point out that I don't mind that the team behind the film had decided to downplay the trademark pervert-side of him. It's quite understandable, as there would be children that would be viewing the film. Whether or not there may be hints of Roshi's perverted approach to women however has yet to be confirmed. From what we can see so far though, I'd say Yun-Fat portrays the mentor/serious aspect quite well.

It was reported that the Chinese gov't didn't approve of the portrayal of Singapore or Sao Feng, as it gave the rest of the world a false impression of those things. Similar to the cannibals in Dead Man's Chest.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Did I read the wrong thing? If not, I don't see what you mean O_o;

But it wouldn't be a Disney film if someone wasn't offended by their racist caricatures.

And I know people hate me saying this.. but it's only a trailer. It's not the entire movie, we can't say for sure that he's totally changed.Mizugi wrote:I don't understand why so many people are upset about Gokuu's personality in the movie. Honestly his personality was changed between the Japanese original and the dub ("Man, Vegeta looks pretty ragged out, huh?") so what's wrong with a depiction that is more consistent with the setting of the film?

Lines were changed, but the overall goofiness of Goku was still kept in the dub.Mizugi wrote:I don't understand why so many people are upset about Gokuu's personality in the movie. The movie appears to make him a stoic, indifferent warrior. (This is just from what I've seen, I'm still waiting to see the movie and crossing my fingers to hope its just in the trailer).
I mean...the thing that bugs me the most about the trailer is:
"Cool."
He was excited at all. It would have been nice to see a little bit of emotion.
