Early Dragon Ball Z movie history questions

Post by jpranevich » Thu Sep 30, 2004 7:54 pm

I need some schooling in Dragon Ball history...

The *third* movie was released in the production run of the Saban horribly-edited pre-CN two seasons of Dragon Ball, correct? It was dubbed by Ocean Group and released as three episodes. The movie guide explains that pretty well. Saban DBZ ends January of 1998. Cartoon Network doesn't pick up the show until August, and there's no new episodes until the following year.

Now... here's where I get confused. Movie #1 was released in December 1997, before the end of Saban DBZ... but not with the Ocean Group cast? Was this produced with Saban or separately? Similarly, Movie #2 comes out in May... after cancellation but before CN episodes started. During the gap months, who was releasing the videos and doing the production? Was Saban just for TV distribution and FUNimation worked with Pioneer directly to release those videos? Was it well-known that CN was picking up the show so production on the movies just continued normally? If so, was it the same voice cast which they would later use once Cartoon Network picked up episodes? (But they wouldn't even have started dubbing Ginyu at that point... it seems pretty early.) Since there is a gap and no new movies after that until 2001, I think I must not understand enough of the early days of US DB hostory.

I hope someone on here remembers that far back.

Well... At least I ask *different* questions...

I'm pretty sure Ocean Group/Saban dubbed all of the first three movies. Thats all I know about.

It was. Although it was Peter Kelthingie doing Goku, not Ian Chorlett. And for some reason Oolong has a different voice actor in either movie 2 or 3.
Romana: "I don't think we should interfere."
Doctor: "Interfere? Of course we should interfere! Always do what you're best at, that's what I say."

His name was Peter Kelamis. He's who did Goku in the movies (minus tv version of "Tree of Might"). Which is why it's nice to have both versions. You can really compare his and Mr. Corlett's Goku here.

Peter Kelamis also took over for Ian Corlett during the Namek saga of the t.v. series until the third season of the show when Funimation moved the dubbing to Texas. It's a shame they couldn't get him back for the Blue Waters dub when they couldn'y get Corlett. Hearing Kirby Morrow's pathetic Goku makes my ears bleed. :?
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."
