"Mere mortals"

Post by ssj2Chrono » Fri Dec 26, 2008 10:23 pm

A question I've been wanting to ask for a long time.

How do people(Parents, siblings, classmates, co-workers etc.) respond to your DragonBall activity?
Are you looked down upon or are greeted with curiosity? Are you looked
down upon by other Anime fans Who have moved on to other anime?
If so, how do you react?

Also, with with those who have only known the Dub, do you try to "convert" them, or leave them as is?

I hope this will be a stimulating discussion.

Title in reference to the fact that 90% us know so much that it should be deemed 'unhealthy".

I've always been into comics, anime and cartoons, so my family and friends don't really take much notice, other than rolling their eyes from time to time.

As for the whole "conversion" with people I know that like the show, if I know they're into anime and aren't opposed to watching something with subtitles, I might recommend they check out the Japanese version, otherwise if they're just a casual fan of the show, I don't see any reason to bother.

Let's start off with my family. My family knows full well that I am a fan of DBZ/anime/manga. They even support it by buying me the DVDs/Manga/etc. It doesn't help that my father is also a fan of the series.(Not as big as a fan. He still wonders why he can't turn Super Saiyan when he picks Mystic Gohan in the video games. ) And my brother is a fan as well. My mother is tolerant of it.AKA, she isn't a fan, but will still watch it if nothing is on and we're watching it anyway. My sister...well, she isn't a fan. She's more of the "OMG High School Musical!" kind of girl...nothing more needs to be said on this >.<.

Now my friends. I have friends in pretty much every social spectrum. Jock, Goth, Skater, and tons of others. I basically have 2 groups of friends, too. Friends from church and friends from school, though there are some friends that fit into both groups.(Although I don't love either one more ;) ) I am very open with my love of Dragonball. I wear the shirts to school/etc. and everyone knows it. In fact, the last few days of school before Christmas break, I took my copy of the first Daizenshuu(Courtesy of VIZ) to school, and my friends even asked to look at it.(And I dont' mean my otaku friends.)

The same goes for church(Except for bring the Daizenshuu...it'd kind of look bad if I accidently forgot my bible because I took that XD). I'm very open about my love for Dragonball, and no one minds. Granted, a few jokes get cracked here and there, but it's not in a mean way at all. I even taught the younger sister of a couple of my friends to do the Kamehameha. (She's no older than 2 or 3). They say she does it all time at home, and that it gets on their nerves. :P

Basically, my friends/family don't mind the fact that I'm a fan of Dragonball at all. I never get made fun of at school or anything, even though my friends range from every step of the social ladder. They accept it as part of me, and I'm sure they think that I wouldn't be the same if I weren't a fan of it. I even have some non-otaku friends that have promised to go see the LAM with me in April when it comes out. :D

All in all, I've learned that there is no need to hide anything like this from your friends/family. If they are already your friends, than they will accept it. I never get made fun of, at all. And trust me, I don't hide it at all.(I even did a speech on the history of Dragonball in my Public speaking class at school, using our beloved Daizex's Newbie Guide as a reference!) I guess I'm just lucky God blessed me with such an accepting environment. :P

----------------------

Now, with the Otaku friends. They are, ironically, the ones I have the most trouble with. Having moved on to "better'(Haha) things such as Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note, they don't really do much with Dragonball at all anymore. Also, most of them grew up with the dub. So, they either think:

1) Dragonball Z is nothing but sweaty guys fighting and yelling and standing still.(They never knew the original Dragonball)

2) They have watched the original and think that Goku sounds like a girl.

------------------------------

As with converting people from the dub, I don't really put much effort into it. To be honest, none of my non-otaku friends are interested in Dragonball anymore, and the ones that are otaku I've already explained above.

My brother gets mad at me for putting Dragonball in Japanese whenever we watch it, but it's gotten less annoying to him lately(or so it seems).

I have, however, accostumed my brother to the Japanese Naruto instead of the English. Mostly because my father bought us one of those things on Ebay(205 Episodes of Naruto!!!1!English subtits!!!1!?!) and that was the only way he could watch them, in Japanese. (English was only up to about episode 40 back then)

Anyway, thats about all I have right now on the subject.

My parents hate it, but I always give my mum the updates with what's going on with the American releases and the live action movie, and my dad rolls his eyes and shrugs dramatically.

My older brother is 20, and he's not going through his "Reconnecting with his childhood phase" he's just really geeky. He hasn't ever watched it in Japanese, or read the manga, but he always calls the characters by their correct names.

My little brother is almost 16 and is definitely going through his rebellious, insulting everyone and being a clown phase, he'll talk to me about the series rarely, but if I talk to him about it he'll tell me to shut the fuck up about that gay series already.
If I watch it down stairs then he'll constantly complain that the music is terrible and that everyone sounds like a girl, when Goku's screaming he groans as loud as possible.

My mum and younger brother have this magical gift to walk in on a sexy moment though so they think all anime is perverted.

The Puppet Master is controlling a naked woman in Ghost in the Shell and being interogated, mum bursts in "Hey, what's going on?" Ok that wasn't a sexy moment, but a naked woman one.
A Woman is having a shower in Zeta Gundam, "HEY, WHAT'S GOING ON?"
Keitaro accidently went into an all girl's dorm and used their bath in Love Hina, you know what's about to happen, "HEY WHAT'S GOING ON?!"
Kimura wants to watch the girl's PE lesson in the pool in Azumanga Daioh... I'm going too far...
BULMA'S HAVING A BATH IN DRAGON BALL Z TALKING TO HER FATHER OVER A COMMUNICATOR AND STANDS UP, "HEY WHAT'S GO- OH YOU SICK BASTARD!!!"

One time I was watching Sakura Diaries, one of them came in, and it suddenly changed from a perverted moment to a sweet and funny moment, it was totally backwards.

I have a lot of faux-nerd friends from school, they're all too ordinary though, and total dickheads... But my college friends are awesome, they all know OVER NINE THOUSAAAAND and watched it religiously on CN. Only one of them was also getting the Season Sets and we'd talk about them together all the time. Turns out he's never really watched it in Japanese though, he's been tippytoeing into it though...

My grandparents know I'm into Japan and that Annie-May/Mango shit, so rather than buying actual Japanese things for birthdays and such, they think they can get away with buying cheap things that look Asian, or guides to Japan.

This year I got cheap shower gel from them though.
And last year when I was 17 and already one of the tallest and biggest members of our family, I got Muppet pijama's, medium sized...

I looked surprised and asked "Is this a joke present or did you mislabel it?" and then they said "No, why?"

With Otaku friends, it's the same old same old that Big Momma brought up, they've moved onto Naruto, Death Note, Fruits Basket, Gundam Seed, and other "Good shows" (Though I like Death Note) they'll use names like "Asuran Zara" and "Raito Yagami" other than their real names, and then with Dragon Ball Z they'll use all the wrong names and think it's just a terrible prototype for shows like Naruto.

I went into a blind rage so I don't know what happened next or why they're all in wheelchairs and never talk to me any more. Kidding...

They think I'm not that far into the whole anime fandom, despite being a fan for twice as long than all of them and having a much bigger collection, none of them even have VHS anime tapes!

My parents know I'm a huge Dragonball fan and a fan of anime in general. My mother doesn't really pay it any mind but my dad jokes around about Dragonball constantly. He will sing along nonsensically with "Head Cha La" or call my bedhead "Vegeta hair"". In fact my father pretty much calls every anime character "those Dragonball lookin' guys".

Funnily enough they both are aware of the huge dub and sub difference. When watching DBZ in the living room one day (on a dub track while having the Japanese subtitles on) they noted "it's like they completely rewrote the script." I think they may be secret subbies

My friends know I like Dragonball and are fans themselves (not big fans though, they don't really know Dragonball outside of the Toonami airings) so I have no reason to keep it secret. Everyone sort of sees my fandom as over excessive though because of my vast collection of Dragonball manga and anime.

It's a bit embarrassing to say you like a children's cartoon, but that's ok.
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

I don't get any shit for it. My younger brother is a Dragonball viewer and enjoys it. Hell, most of my friends have seen and enjoy the show. I'm even trying to get my girlfriend into the franchise.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Sure it is if you're insecure about your maturity. If nothing else I'm still more mature watching children's cartoons then the people who enjoyed Disaster movie.

Man, that movie was a...well, I don't need to say it.

But he's right. I used to be embarrassed of it, too. But then I realized, "Hey, do I really give a crap if people make fun of me for it?" and I didn't. I got out there and flaunted it, and no one gave me crap for it. If anything, I have more friends than I did back then. And they're true friends, because I know they love me and KNOW of my anime fan-ness.

I'm less worried about people calling me a nerd for watching it, and more worried about getting them to enjoy the same awesome show that I do. 8)

Never was embarrassed about DB fandom, nor knew anyone who was. Though seeing this reminds me of a few guys who were in their teens and 20s and watched Power Rangers and gave excuses of babysitting or checking out the hot female rangers.

Exactly the same with my mother!

I'm not exactly very open about my DB/General Anime fan-ness. My family pretty much knows I like 'weird Chinese Cartoons.....'

However recently I have started to get my mom and older brother into the series. My mom watches an episode of original DB with me once in a while and my brother (who was a fan of it in its heyday) has started to show more interest in it, and plays the video games with me, asks about the characters and watches an episode when hes bored. :)

I tend to be casual about my DB-fandom in rl.
This also has to do with the fact that the only friends who used to watch the show with me in rl back in the day are no longer into it, so I tend to go it alone nowadays. ^^;

Case in point; I have that new wallpaper TeamFourStar posted up for download on my desktop; two family members on two different occasions commented on how nice the wallpaper looked and neither one noticed the giant orange ornament was the 4-star dragon ball.

I was amused. :3

They all know I like the show though; as I've gotten kanzenban volumes from them for xmas; and other DB-related gifts in the past. (Also there's a foot-tall Goku overlooking one of my bookcases).
On hiatus.
