Two Artist One Scene Discussion.

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Thu Jan 01, 2009 12:47 pm

I wanted to start a fun little topic. You know how sometimes when an episode ends, the next episode will start with the previous episodes final scenes? Sometimes those scenes are re-drawn by that particular episodes artist. For example:

I think it's really interesting seeing how two different artist can draw one scene. I know this happens a few times in the series, but I'am not going through every episode. Anyone down with this?

The artist of the first and second image is Hiroyuki Uchityama, the worst Sakuga Kantoku(Animation Supervisor) of the entire DB series. 2nd and 4th ones are surely drawn by Tomekichi Takeuchi. 6th and 8th ones are drawn by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, the 2nd charactor designer of DBZ. Then, Yukio Ebisawa for the worse ones.

I guess it really depends in what order. I don't know about the Goten vs. Trunks episode, but in the episodes where Trunks kills Freeza the well drawn pic is at the episode's end and the poorly drawn one at the next episode's beginning. In THAT case... no if it's not broken don't fix it! And it defenitely WAS NOT broken :p other way around if it looks better... yeah, go for it :D

I never really liked the "redrawing of previous scenes" because it really exposed how terrible some of the artists were.

I love how the scar on Freeza's head morphs into a vein.

I remember the Trunks and Freeza ones. The drop in quality of the animation in the episodes was so fucking noticable :?

There was also another weird moment later in the Buu saga where Goku goes SSJ3 at the end of an episode, and at the beginning of the next episode, all of a sudden him and Vegeta have scratches all over their faces and their clothes are torn up, whereas in the previous episode, they were completely unscathed.

Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I sometimes wonder whether or not the animators are aware of what the FUCK is going on in the story, or are they just drawing?

Here's another case of 2artists1scene, but with good studios:

Re: jjgp1112's Pics...

I never noticed those. I always figured it went from bad to good or good to bad but not good to good. I find that very interesting. Thanks.

Did you also notice the inconsistent backgrounds?

I hate watching the episode after Trunks kills Freeza.
The animation on that little 'recap' at the start is just awful, and pales in comparason to what we saw previously. Kinda' takes you out of the moment.

Completely. They were two of the first episodes I saw of Japanese DBZ, and...wow. I just remember going, "What the hell?"

Wow, the similarities during the saiyajin arc are pretty solid. Not nearly as drastic/noticeable as the ones during Buu.

Poor Trunks, his hair always suffers so badly when the poorer quality animators take over.

What is wrong with that first Goten's eyes?

Krillin's better at growing his ears than his hair.

This is a great topic. I've noticed that stuff before too. I guess they couldn't find more talented artists? I dunno... some of the drops in quality are really bad.

Here's a few I took some caps of. Sorry for letting the little menu thing in VLC pop up over the image. I didn't realize until after I took the first set that they were on the images. Oh well haha.
