Has DBZ EVER gotten a good review score?

Post by koden » Tue Oct 12, 2004 10:49 pm

well, I mean, have any of you ever seen it get a good score on an anime review site or something? One that was actually written with intelligence and was well-supported?

I've only seen a few, maybe 3 or 4. All I ever see is the same crap said over and over again, the like of which I'm sure yall are fully aware of, but I guess I should be happy with the few positive reviews I've seen it given. =\

Better than nothing...

Its simple really, the entire "anime community" has become anti-DBZ really, and basically anti-every anime intended for kids. Its a sad era we live in today...

The problem is that the "Anime snobs" think its too good for them because they think its meant for 12 year olds. Why cant all Anime fans just get along?

Typically the "hardcore" review sites do not even give Dragon Ball a chance, I remember the one disc review column on Anime News network, it was the first Piccolo Jr. set they were reviewing and the content of the review was such garbage, it's available here:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/columns ... .php?id=30

I can understand someone watching something and not liking it and thus giving a negative review, but this particular reviewer does his best to give the impression that he watched this set in full and then gives misleading information about it proving that he did not even watch the first episode in it's entirety (The episode in which Goku finds his staff, which the reviewer claims took the whole set of episodes to do).

Why even bother reviewing a show if your not going to give it a chance?

Yup, sadly the "true" anime fans discard anime aimed at kids and only think of the as "Gateway drugs". Their excuse is that DB is boring and repetative, it seems they need to put others down to make themselves feel more adult.

That's not to say DragonBall should be given this hugely awesome glowing review... at the same time, yeah... I've never seen a truly unbiased review of the property at all.

I find it annoying when people do that. OK so DBZ ain't perfect but it still has some good moments. Plus it's a great "Leave your brain at the door, sit back and enjoy" kind of show. Fortunatly the DBZ review at Enpitsudo Dojo seems fair.

I've seen better anime than DBZ but DBZ is what introduced me to anime so I could never hate it.

It's funny how it praises GT in the ANN article.

Even goes as far to say that it's for Toriyama fans.

I do consider myself at least a somewhat intelligent person (especially considering my age group) yet I love Dragonball. And it's rather insulting when some jackass who has never even watched more than twenty seconds of the show damns it in some retarded monthly organ for all to see.

If Dragonball is so pathetic, then other animes must be the lowest form of entertainment. Considering the unoriginal/stale/ugly character designs, convoluted plots, shameful character development which usually results in characters making random, unlikely decisions, and really, really stupid, plainly foreseable endings, and other things that really insult my intelligence, does that make me too much the ignoramous to see the brilliance in all this tripe? It's all in one's taste, but you should at least watch these shows and give them a chance. I watched a lot of anime in my younger years. I've seen it all: the ones with convoluted plots involving either robots or less-than-dramatic romances, or a guy living with ten zany girls who want to screw him and for some reason he doesn't want to screw any of them, the ones with girls who look like they're 10 year-olds but are stated to be 26, or ones with fights entirely composed of still frames and reused animation, etc, etc. After all this time though, it's all just the same and/or terrible to me. I mean, how many more ways can a guy fall over and accidently grab some girl's naughty-bits? How many more ways?!

Dragonball has it all over these shows in terms of great storytelling. I'm not about to compare it to the works of Kubrick or anything, but just because it's a kid's show doesn't mean it can't have themes and excellent character development. In fact, despite the often trashy dub produced from it (at times one of the worst), a truly great shows still shines through. And it must've been quite excellent considering how it did in the ratings compared to other animes. And it also greatly aided in paving the way for other, more violent or adult (not necessarily more mature) animes.
"In fact, the United States Alf Fanfiction Department has issued notices offering high paying jobs for more Alf fanfiction, which they believe could immediately resolve countless global issues such as world hunger."

Don't you just love those? I mean it's just so realistic that 10 extremly attractive space chicks are fighting tooth and nail to give it up to some fugly japanese guy.

"Who lives in the east 'neath the willow tree? Sexual Harrasement Panda!" Sorry, I had to say it. But yeah, I wonder how many of the guys who go around complaining about how bad DB is, are those "true" anime fans are anime equivelents of the crazy Trekkies?

w3rd.

Kodoshin: That review you linked to.... oh my eyes. :x That Bamboo Dong guy seems like an ass.... people like him annoy the hell out of me. =/

Indeed, but then, DB doesn't deserve all the BS it gets either.
I think it deserves way more than what it gets... if series like can get great reviews, why the hell can't Dragon Ball? (and not that I was trying to bash in any way, I'm just saying.)

I actually came across that one a few days ago. It's one of the few good reviews I've seen.

By the way, I think I'll link to the best DBZ review I've ever seen, so yall can see it for yourselves;

It's long as hell, but don't let that stop you. It's really good... now if only there were more like it.

Anime fans are as biased about DBZ as DBZ fans are about dubs. And things seem to suck more or suck less when you actually take them for what they are and don't bite into hype.

Or, at least that's what i've come to find. I just think the whole community is in a rut of arrogance. You know, how anime and game fans tend to throw the word 'n00b/newbie/anyotherplayontheword' around like a rag doll? Everyone seems to think that they are on a higher plane of existence...or something... Put something down to make yourself feel better.

Well said Tenken. Well said. You pretty much summed it up there.
