I think the first DVD I got was Super Android 13 and the only other one I ever got was A Hero's Legacy. I have since started collecting the orange bricks though. I knew back in the day that there would have to be a better way to buy the series other than 3-4 episodes per release so I always decided to wait.
As far as VHS goes I rented the 3 Pioneer movies from Blockbuster in the late nineties (98/99 I think?). I owned the first Trunks Saga VHS and I also paid S+H through some Burger King promotion to get 2 filler episodes from the Android Saga (one was the drivers license one, can't remember the other). I also had Cooler's Revenge on VHS.

The first DragonBall DVD I ever owned was FUNi's release of Fusion Reborn. Gonna be a bittersweet moment when I sell it towards the corresponding Double Feature in a few months.

I kid, I kid.
Let's add a little variety to the thread; How long have you been collecting the series for?
I've been collecting the series since 2000 I believe, and unfortunately I've yet to complete the entire series. Sad story.

My first ever Dragon Ball DVD was the Dragon Ball Z Uncut Movie Trilogy by Pioneer. It was a boxset containing the first three DBZ movies (Ocean Group dub). I still have it too!

My first DBZ DVD was Freeza: Transformation, purchased from a local EBX for $20. I actually bought it because I thought the episode that had (what later came to be known as) "Vegeta Fights Freeza," the dub battle song, on it. I was disappointed to find out that it didn't, so the next month when the next DVD came out, I picked that one up. It kind of snowballed from there. I now own every single and box set except for some of the re-releases of the already-released movies (not the new ones, things like the Broly Thinpack and whatnot). And yes, I did buy almost all of them at the $20 price point as they released. Funimation loves me.
Pioneer's "The Saiyans" and "Snake Way". 60$ a pop at a shabby import store, and no one told me it was some crappy censored dub I had no real interest in watching.
But it was Dragonball, so yay!

My first DVD was:

which I bought at the tale end of 2000 as one of my first DVDs ever, since I got my first DVD player that christmas (Incidentally the other two were the first volumes of Rurouni Kenshin and Gundam Wing).

I'll jump in on the full answers.
First Fansub VHS: DBZ episodes 95-106 (two tapes), 1996(?)
First Commercial VHS: Arrival (FUNimation), 1997(?)
First Commercial DVD: Captain Ginyu: Assault (FUNimation), 2000
First Commercial Blu-ray: No DBZ stuff yet, though it'll probably end up being DBZ movie 1...
