The reason I keep things like DBZ figures in their packaging is... well... I'm not seriously going to play with them (in the sort of bang-zoom-crash-yeeeeaaah! way I did when I was five), and so keeping them in their packaging allows me to do things like potentially prop them up in a nice linear display at some point in the future. The packaging provides some extra nice color, and showcases a sort of "time capsule" aspect to it (especially in the case of things like Irwin re-releases of the Japanese Super Battle Collection figures, which had already been out for something like a decade prior). It's nice to compare the packaging across time and countries.
I may not "enjoy" them in the same way I would if I was a little kid, but there's some "enjoyment" to be had in sitting back in a chair and panning your gaze around a room to see them all. I don't have anything like this yet, but the place we're bidding on has a nice finished basement that would work well... ^_~
Loose figures (and "toys" that came in minimal packaging) are indeed "out" of this original packaging and set up in little cubbies. I may not play with them, but sometimes the cats do
