The only likeness of Goku and Luffy are their lust for massive amounts of food. Based on the way they act and their minds, Goku's more of a "I'm sane but just ignorant" type of guy while Luffy is someone who although lived an average life as a child, still came out to be ridiculously stupid and never acts normal. Hell, even when Luffy's being quiet and all serious, he never has a conversation that last for over a few minutes without him screaming and acting crazy again. Does Luffy even think through things? Of all the adventures we've seen him in, he doesn't think, he just acts and will keep going until he succeeds his goals.B wrote:I honestly think Naruto is much more enjoyable character than Luffy. Luffy just seems to emulate everything about Goku, but multiplied by about 5. Naruto may have created with Goku in mind, but he certainly developed into his own character.
That's not to say Luffy isn't a good character; you could probably say since he takes Goku's qualities to such an extreme, he isn't like Goku at all.
The little familiar traits between the two both have completely diferent reasons to why they're like that. If Goku went and lived a normal life in some town or city, there's no doubt he'd be as average as the next person but with unique strength. If Luffy lived Goku's lifestyle, he wouldn't be stupid, he'd be even MORE stupid than he already is.

Funny, we just had a topic on Arlong Park seriously questioning whether or not Luffy was mentally handicapped.
But yeah, while Gokuh and Luffy may be very superficially similar, he's definitely his own character.
Uh, what were we talking about again?

Exactly, I was speaking positively about Luffy and that he more original than what's been said, because I like how he's more stupid and insane and I take that as a major difference to Goku. I mean currently in the latest chapters, he's breaking into the most secure and locked tight prison in all of OP thrashing everything in his path without a hint of thought, that has badass and awesomeness all over.JulieYBM wrote:Well, how far into One Piece have you read? Luffy often seems to be willing to live with the causes of his actions no matter what. He might be a little insane but I like to think maybe it's just him trying to enjoy the ride as much he can.
Both were based on Sun Wukong really, so some similarities aren't that surprising.Mr. Announcer wrote:Funny, we just had a topic on Arlong Park seriously questioning whether or not Luffy was mentally handicapped.

No, it's a ripoff of Pokemon.jda95 wrote:Is it just me or is Avatar a complete ripoff of Naruto?
Though I've actually wondered why some people even mention it, I watch it a few times and it looks okay I guess, the first thing that puts me off is the anime style characters, but that's pretty common now anyway, and the characters seem really likeable.
I saw that the DVD versions and the TV verrsions are different too, like some girls clevage and breasts toned down or something, and violence too, so I may pick up the first season eventually.
Anyway, this kind of reaction from kids seems kinda normal, Goku is like Luke Skywalker or Spider-man for some kids, he's a hero to them just because he's the main character of a popular franchise kids happen to fall in love with all the time. As a child I thought the Super Mario Bros movie was the greastest movie of all time, I expect this kind of reaction from children for Dragonball Evolution.

While I think everyone over the age of ten wants any movie to kick Hannah Montanna's ass, the little girls will flood those cinemas. It'll be a swarm of them. And we will be trampled upon, ladies and gentlemen, I guarantee you that.Chrono Trigger wrote:I really hope this movie kicks the living shit out of Hannah Montana's ass.omegacwa wrote:The kids flipped their shit. Friend in Japan sent this, have no idea what it means.
and yesterday TV program Sma Station, Justin appeared in video
interview again. I couldn't see it again, very sad...
in it, Justin told to Shingo Katori (this program's MC) that next
movie, Let's play goku with Katori fifty-fifty. (Katori played Son
Goku of Saiyuki in Japanese movie)
Apparently Justin Chatwin wants to act alongside some Katori fifty-fifty person who also played Son Goku in some other manga?

Justin Chatwin had an interview with Shingo Katori, who happened to have portrayed Son Goku in the Japanese live action TV series, Saiyuki.
Chatwin then said something along the lines of "We should play Goku together in the next movie!", in what I'm assuming to be a joking manner.

Probably another example of the Japanese not "getting" sarcasm.MisterFlashdude wrote:To make a little more sense of this...JAPPO wrote:Friend in Japan sent this, have no idea what it means.

To me it looks more like a French animation, which have always been closer to standard Japanese animation than stuff from the US. It's the character designs that look vaguely like they should be from an anime, but the animation style itself is very different. The Time Traveller wrote:the first thing that puts me off is the anime style characters, but that's pretty common now anyway
Oh, and the backgrounds rival Miyazaki level detail somehow.
Yep, in a nutshell.Chrono Trigger wrote:I really hope this movie kicks the living shit out of Hannah Montana's ass.omegacwa wrote:The kids flipped their shit. I swear to you, they were screaming for the movie. I heard a couple Kid exclaiming GOKU!!!

Literally!Saiyan-Professor wrote:Truthfully, I do not get One Piece and I think Naruto is a much better successor since it seems like a mature Dragonball. One Piece just seems like a wet dream Kakarrot would have.
The "we want to look like anime" approach kind of threw me off at first, too. But it is actually a very good show. Well, it's a heckuva lot better than "Three Delivery", "Speed Racer: The Next Generation", or "Kappa Mikey". All three of those shows fail so miserably. The best one of those three is Kappa Mikey, but only because of the humor, which can be incredibly lame at times. The Time Traveler wrote:Though I've actually wondered why some people even mention it, I watch it a few times and it looks okay I guess, the first thing that puts me off is the anime style characters, but that's pretty common now anyway, and the characters seem really likeable.
Wait, are you saying they had to EDIT Avatar for television airing?I saw that the DVD versions and the TV verrsions are different too, like some girls clevage and breasts toned down or something, and violence too, so I may pick up the first season eventually.
Okay, that means Avatar can OFFICIALLY be a "real" anime now.

Not much of a plot, but it is there!

Wasn't "Oban:Star Racers" like that, too? Although, I wouldn't say it was anime style, it had a whole look of it's own.Bussani wrote:To me it looks more like a French animation, which have always been closer to standard Japanese animation than stuff from the US. I haven't seen much of it, but from what I have, I'd think so. That was a French/Japanese production too. The two countries seem to work together a lot when it comes to animation, so it's not that surprising that their designs are pretty similar.Big Momma wrote:Wasn't "Oban:Star Racers" like that, too? Personally I don't think there's such a thing as an 'anime style' really. Styles differ greatly between two anime, especially something like Shin-chan. If anything I'd say the anime style is the style it's 'filmed' in. I don't know how to explain it, but even Shin-chan has it. It's a vibe. But yeah, obviously some shows are heavily influenced by common traits of anime.
I forgive Kappa Mikey because it's more like a homage to anime. The creators were obviously fans judging by all the little references in the background.
I didn't realize Avatar was edited in the US (it wasn't here). I'd imagine the only thing necessary would be like Ty Lee in the beach episode...man that girl's busty for a cartoon character.
Uh, wow. Sorry for getting so off topic.
